Here's a few THOUSAND of my favourites from 1976 that I think are underrated: Joan Armatrading: Joan Armatrading Shawn Phillips: Rumplestiltskin's Resolve Bad Company: Run With the Pack Tangerine Dream: Stratosfear Santana: Amigos Steely Dan: The Royal Scam Bob Dylan: Desire Mahogany Rush: IV Genesis: Wind and Wuthering Strawbs: Deep Cuts Gordon Lightfoot: Summertime Dream Bob Marley: Rastaman Vibration Jeff Beck: Wired Frank Zappa: Zoot Allures Jean-Michel Jarre: Oxygène Manfred Mann's Earth Band: The Roaring Silence Jon Anderson: Olias of Sunhillow David Bowie: Station to Station
Terry Reid also ducked out of an offer to join Deep Purple. Ian Gillan moved in instead. Over and above those already mentioned by others, here's a few more that get played quite a lot in my house. Steve Hillage - L Kevin Ayers - Yes We Have No Mananas Tommy Bolin - Private Eyes Brand X - Unorthodox Behaviour Nils Lofgren - Cry Tough Man - The Welsh Connection Manfred Mann's Earth Band - The Roaring Silence John Miles - Rebel
Be-Bop Deluxe - Sunburst Finish, great pick!! It was pretty popular amongst underground FM radio prog, glam rock listeners. Or popular amongst my friends at the time. Did Yes Close to the Edge chart? no. It's iconic and one the most popular reaction channel albums now. Charts don't mean shit.
Excellent show I'm totally with you on that Baker gurvitz army album fantastic pick be bop deluxe put another good album later in 1976 modern music it's good as for my picks for underrated albums in 1976 are Harry Chapin on the road to kingdom come, America hideaway, Barclay James harvest Octoberon and wishbone ash new England
There is great footage from 1970 Glastonbury (Glastonbury Fayre), of Terry Reid and his band, singing “Dean”. It’s fabulous. The band are stoned. The drummer is smoking a big spliff. The song sort of falls together as the musicians, in their haze, gradually all join in. But it somehow makes the song even better. You can find it on TH-cam (Terry Reid, “Dean”, 1970 Glastonbury Fayre). Well worth the listen.
Great show as always Dangerman. That Sunburst Finish album was quite a big release in the U.K. and the music press were all over it. One of the last great art-rock albums of the era. For a couple of years they were critically lauded, and deservedly so. Great band led by the super-talented Bill Nelson. Shame that they fell apart in the punk revolution.
Saw Be Bop Deluxe x2 in Glasgow, Modern Music & Drastic Plastic tours. Bill Nelson is extremely prolific as a solo artist as well! Agree with the Prince comparisons, in terms of guitar styling. Also always thought Prince borrowed heavily from Todd Rundgren, another underrated guitarist.
My 2 favorite albums from 1976 are the first 2 Graham Parker albums, Howlin' Wind and Heat Treatment. Neither is very well-known with the public at large, but the albums feature Parker's soulful singing, great songwriting, and a fine band. If you like Bob Dylan, Van Morrison, and Otis Redding, there's a good chance that you'll like these 2 albums.
Thanks. Far out picks! I like: James Brown-Bodyheat, Status Quo-Blue for You, Alessi, Taj Mahal-Music Fah Ya’, Paris- Big Town 2061…also 801-801 Live. Your Underrated Must Have Series has been fun. Keep it going…..
Go listen to "Superlung" by Terry Reid. The man had some PIPES!!! And you're so right about Be Bop Deluxe. Bill Nelson us a phenomenal player and hus compositions are like no one else. People really missed the boat overlooking this band. They have a greatest hits album called "Raiding the Divine Archive" that has all his classics. And he had quite a few. If you can find it, it's WELL worth picking up. You'll fall in love with it.
Make sure to pick up (if you haven't already) the two albums by the graeme edge band for more Gurvitz goodness. 🎶 also the two Parrish and Gurvitz albums.
Appreciate the recommendations. I actually talk about the first Graeme Edge Band LP in my 1975 episode. Check it out! 🤘😁. th-cam.com/video/VI_goFoaJaY/w-d-xo.htmlsi=vUb1-thA_vNOZK8S
Hi Rhythm "On the Loose" is fantastic. It's the backing band of Hi records and they sound great here. Quirky, fun stuff sans an all-time great voice like Al's but it actually works for the music's vibe. Ronnie Lane's Slim Chance "One For the Road" is the best "solo" work the former Faces and Small Faces bassist would do. This one feels live at times very much like an album made as a small community experience - which i think it was. Bill Withers - Naked and Warm. His last really good record? Great grooves on this one.

They got a decent amount of coverage in the UK.

Yes, they were on all the rock/pop TV programmes ! Great Band !
@@paulbrookes413 I'm reminded of that great Lone Star debut from '76 too. Just listening to it this morning.
@@PhilBaird1I have both their albums on a 1CD release.
Lone Star have a great mix of great music !

1977 Metro album… still brilliant after all these years.
Always educational.
Peace on earth.

Jon Anderson - Olias of Sunhillow
He's a wizard on that one !
'God Bluff' by Van Der Graaf Generator (1976) is a banger. Later the same year they released 'Still Life' which is also head-crackingly good.
"Head-crackingly good" - easy comment of the week. 😂
American Flyer

@@vinylrecordplayer thanks, always dig your picks and am hipped to 1 or 2 new things worth checking out. And yeah that Hi Rhythm record is very cool.
Marvin Gaye would do a fantastic disco single in 1977 called “Got to Give It Up.”
One of his best jams, for sure. 🤘😁
Ry Cooder: "Chicken Skin Music".
