  • James Gurney reconstructs the badger-size mammal Repenomamus that was found with the remains of a baby dinosaur in its stomach. He previews his longer tutorial and explains the overall process of making sketches in gouache, building a 3D maquette for reference, preparing the art board with texture, and finding real-world reference.

    Really like how painterly your reconstructions are!. They are a perfect blend of scientific reality yet aesthetically beautiful at the same time. Thanks for posting this video. Joe

    Well, I've managed to purchase on of your videos. Well worth the price. I've just never seen anyone with your range. In my 70 years I've had fifty mini and midi-careers (true; not exaggerating). For five years I was a commercial artist in a private firm. I accumulated many skills. I love seeing your shop, your models (I once did a big scale model of many buildings and used human hair for handrails and telephone lines, and made people 1/4 inch tall), your painting techniques and processes. If I wasn't on a fixed income now in the latter stages of life I would own and watch every one of your full length videos. I'm still learning and you have become my master.

    I adore watching you paint! I have loved your work for a very long time, both Dinotopia and your work in National Geographic. So it is so fun for me to see your processes. I love how much thought you put into your pieces. It's never just 'I guess I will draw a dinosaur'. You go into what was the animal like, how did it think, what was it's behavior, what was around it.
    Have mostly worked in markers, pen and ink, and digital in the past but I am just lately starting to get into watercolor and I JUST bought a set of Gouache so I appriciate all these videos that you put up. They are not only enjoyable but very helpful.

    Very strange to think Mammals were around during the dinosaurs, I mean they existed for about the same amount of time together, Just imagine a world were both dinosaurs and mammals grew to meet eachothers size.

      Yes, that is amazing. Also I'm amazed how terrestrial dinosaurs lived alongside not only pterosaurs but flying birds.

      What i find fascinating is that during the Permian era therapsids [which include mammals] rules the megafauna, this before dinosaurs! Permian extinction ended that reign, though we did rebound archosaurs took over in the Triassic, and after the Triassic extinction dinosaurs took the playing field.

    This is a definitive purchase! Any advice for someone who want's to grasps the fundamentals of drawing?

    • @JamesGurney
      @JamesGurney  8 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      It depends what kind of drawing you want to learn and how hard you want to work at it. I recommend any of Andrew Loomis's books for the figure and classical composition, Scott Robertson's books for perspective, and for accuracy and tonal sketching, "Sketching: From Square One to Trafalgar Square" by Richard Scott.

    What type of paint did you use for those two finished pieces? Oil? If so, how do you get it to dry so quickly?

    • @JamesGurney
      @JamesGurney  8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +Rebecca Nelson Those are both done in oil. I use Liquin (an alkyd medium) and occasionally a tiny bit of cobalt drier mixed into the white, though that's usually not necessary unless you work really thick. Paint is dry overnight.

    What happens to the originals, do you have the company post them back when they have finished printing them or do you sell them on?

    • @JamesGurney
      @JamesGurney  8 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      +Andy's Art World They return the originals, and I sell them eventually , but I hang onto them for exhibitions. Two recent Scientific American paintings will be in the Focus on Nature exhibition later this year in Rochester, NY.
