  • James Gurney’s "Dinotopia" bring the worlds of science and the imagination to life by chronicling Arthur and Will Denison’s remarkable experiences on a lost island in vibrant color and meticulous detail. Recounted in words and pictures in the best-selling book series, "Dinotopia: A Land Apart From Time" (1992), "Dinotopia: The World Beneath" (1995), and "Dinotopia: First Flight" (1999), the artist’s compelling tale has engaged and enchanted readers by inviting them to explore the far reaches of a mysterious destination. Waterfall City, the island’s center of learning, The Hatchery, birthplace of many of Dinotopia’s prehistoric inhabitants, and The Forbidden Mountains, where dinosaurs dare not venture, are just a few of the places described in Arthur Denison’s fictional journal and in the outstanding works on view.
Inspired by a deep and abiding interest in archaeology, lost civilizations, and the art of illustration, James Gurney invites viewers to enter a fantastical world in which dinosaurs and humans live side-by-side. His luminous paintings, beautifully crafted drawings and hand-made models, which are featured in this exhibition, explore the wonders of the distant past through the lens of the imagination. The artist’s original "New York Times" bestseller, "Dinotopia: A Land Apart from Time," appears in eighteen languages with over two million copies sold. "Dinotopia: Journey to Chandara," the next installment in the series, has been released and is now available.

He keeps refering to the "Masters", not believing him to be one for the future generations. What a humble, soulful human ...

I don't think an artist would ever refer to himself as a master, because in an artists eyes he's never good enough

James Gurney should call up Studio Ghibli and work out a deal for an animated Dinotopia movie. Studio Ghibli is the only animation studio that would do it right.

I watched the mini series Dynatopia with my daughter when she was young and we both enjoyed it immensely. To this day, we do not understand why it did not evolve into a long running series.
Thank you 🙏 Mr Gurney for many hours of delightful entertainment. We hope that sometime there will be more series made.

I like how there are just animals from the Mesozoic that live on this island, but also animals from the Paleozoic and Cenozoic eras, these paintings almost makes me wish this place exsists👍

I always thought you created the art travel sketchbook but hearing John Steinbeck inspired you is wonderful. His stories had a profound effect on me as a teenager. I keep his books so I can return to them every so often.

James Gurney and I were born palsbgor a while. Both he and his friend Thomas Kinkade signed my Artists Guide to Sketching. I mailed James a Goliath Beetle and he sent me Christmas cards he drew for many years. We first met at ArtCenter College of Design when he gave a presentation there.

A truly amazing artist, though I have to say his little friend is actually a budgerigar, not a parakeet. Also that hymn that is sung at the end of this clip, is that the actual hymn from the book?

The Chinese translation of Dinosaur as Terrible Lizard is just a translation of the Greek meaning of Dinosaur, which is Terrible Lizard, which was chosen by the paleontologist Richard Owen, because he felt they were Terrible Lizards. Chinese doesn't have another language to draw from in the way that English draws from Greek, Latin, French or German, so Chinese translations sound ultra-literal when translated back to English, but all Chinese readers understand the actual concept being referred to and not the literal meaning of the words.
