Some explanations: one of the reasons the lyrics are so in your face is because the books all short and simple to make them easier to read for kids with ADD/ADHD and also cause they're from Percy's pov and he's like 12.
There is very little growth in the first book, The lightning thief because the series is so long. It takes 5 books for percy to forgive his dad and like 7 more for to be so fed up with the Gods that he just flat out says no when Apollo shows up at his front door.

    • @makoloxko
      @makoloxko 3 ปีที่แล้ว +171

Also the hating of their parents is kind of out of character for the first book because for the longest time they were scared of saying anything bad about them. It takes almost two complete series and falling into hell for percy to be like fuck you to the gods.

Most of the reason for the line "I never meant to hurt anyone" is from how he got expelled from his other schools. Accidentally firing a cannon at a Revolutionary War battlefield, pushing a lever and sending his class into the shark tank at an aquarium, and pushing a student into a giant fountain (that happened at the museum in the book but wasn't shown)

The musical makes more sense when you read the book, and it is also more accurate the the two movies. It's a theme in the series that demigods don't like their parents with few exceptions. Percy is somewhat an exception because he knows Posiedon cares about him, but he can't show it. Sally doesn't tell Percy because when he finds out he's a demigod, his scent gets stronger and being the son of a powerful god, he can be tracked down and killed.

People forget to mention the most important thing about *Good Kid* which is Gabe. Percy's stepdad was abusive, and there's this whole plot about how his mom stayed married to him to protect Percy from monsters because of Gabe's smell - in the books, Percy calls him Smelly Gabe and Grover even mentions at some point it was how Percy actually never got attacked until Ms Dodds shows up. Because Gabe's stench was covering Percy's demigod smell, his mom endured a lot of dark things, and in the musical they show just how much being raised in a abusive household messed with Percy's head. Hence *Good Kid* having lines like "guess I'm good for nothing at all", "a bum rap, a bad rep and a good smack". You saying it sounds dramatic - it is. Because Percy's been though a lot, has seen a lot of shit and he is twelve at this point. Maybe you could be interested into reading the books? They are a lot of fun and the musical will make much more sense if you have the whole story.

I think the confusion here is a combination of the entire show not being sung through and the fact that it's part of a series. There are a bunch of scenes with important information that you don't get from just listening to the songs. It also ends the way it does because it's setting up the overarching conflict for the entire series so everything can't be resolved. With that being said, I absolutely love this show and it's so cool to see it live! They manage to do a lot of "special effects" on stage without super high tech methods. My favorite example is in Son of Poseidon, Percy uses his powers to control the water and they show this by basically shooting rolls of toilet paper at Ares using leaf blowers

The target of this show is the awkward nerdy teens who grew up reading the books and then was failed by the movie, so was happy to have something that lived up to the book. I didn't like the album when I listened to it but when i watched the show I was so emotional I cried.

  • @caseyyy4785

you were right about the target audience; basically, if you haven't read the books it seems more confusing and less structured than if you knew what was going on (duh). I think a lot of fans loved this because it stayed true to the lore and structure of the books, especially compared to the movies that butchered the story
edit: now realizing lots of people already said this, but I still stand by it. It was cute and funny while still maintaining the personalities of the characters and having kickass music :)

As someone who saw this musical live; God it's just amazing on stage. The costumes are great, it's funny and snarky and stays true to the original source material (I remember a line which Grover was telling Percy Mrs. Dodds was a fury, and Percy yelled "You're a furry!" to him, found it far more funny than I should have). Also, of course, their voices are incredible and sound *so* similar to the cast recording. Especially Annabeth, which is incredible because her song is super hard. Also, I totally get what you said when you said the cast recording sounded cinematic. It's super cool on stage, but because they didn't edit out a lot of dialogue it was pretty wordy sometimes. And can be very confusing, which comes from someone who saw it.

The musical is based on the book, and the book also leaves questions. They may be planning a sequel, but the musical's plot is half song half dialogue, which is why there are jumps. Also, the majority of the fans are already book fans, which makes it easier for them to pander.

Something kinda important for the Percy failure mindset is that he’s spent all of his life being told he’s a screw up, a troubled kid, and getting expelled from schools. His mom pushes him away to protect but he of course doesn’t know that and all the “weird things that happen to him” he gets blamed for. So, ultimately he’s a twelve year old boy who’s been blamed for things that aren’t his fault and who gets battered down at every turn so it’s hard not to understand that he might feel a little defeated. His personality makes a lot more sense and is a lot more likeable I think in the books which are from his perspective

Please please please read the books! There amazing and it makes the musical make much more sense. The musical is much more loyal to the books then the movies (which through out about 90 percent of the book)! Also, there are 10 books that Percy has a large role in, and lightning thief is just the first one so that’s why he has very little development through the musical because he grows through all of those books.

  • @FloreMar-yp3iz
    @FloreMar-yp3iz 3 ปีที่แล้ว +33

    A little explanation uwu
Percy Jackson (the first saga) is composed of 5 books, this is an adaptation of just the first book. That's why most of the questions are unsolved, and there isn't too much character growth
The "too on the nose" feelings might be because it's told via Percy. The books are in 1st person, and it focuses A LOT on how Percy feels.
And I haven't seen the show live, so I guess most of the information is on the dialogue (Like when they met Medusa, Hades, when they explode the bus, when they blame Percy for stealing the lighting bolt, etc).
I totally recommend the books (never is too late, they are kinda funny uwu)! And also listening to the cut songs or the bonus tracks, IMO they express the journey in a better way (specially We Are On the Same Boat(?)
The books have been part of my life since I was 11, so I'm really attached to them, and I can confirm this is a really good adaptation overall. At least better than the movies

I read the Percy Jackson for the first time a few years ago, sometime in high school (I realize I was a little late to the party), and greatly enjoyed it. Shortly afterword I found the musical and became obsessed. I finally found in the musical all of the content that was sadly missing from the movies. I even got to go see it live in Detroit when they came through, and fell in love with the show even further.
I think what made me really enjoy it was that I didn't go into it with an older mindset, I rather looked at it like a kid would and fascinated over the effects and the funny jokes. A teacher from my school had gone to see it that same weekend and had talked about how he thought it was too childish, immature, and didn't enjoy adults acting like 12 year olds. The issue is, he thought of it as a high school English teacher would and thought it would be some literary masterpiece, rather than a show made for young, imaginative kids. (he particularly said that he hated how they used toilet paper on the end of a leaf blower as "water", while I thought it was inventive and hilarious)

I was ~17 when I went to see the show, so it wasn't like I was a small child who still had that outlook and imagination, I just put myself in those shoes. The same thing when I read the books because while the writing was obviously meant for a kid, it didn't really detract from the experience or adventure of it for me. ok, one of the reasons that good kid is placed where it is, is because right before the song in the musical, like the Broadway performance Chiron forced Percy to go on the quest, the I never hurt anyone was Because he accidentally pulled Nancy into the fountain and that could have hurt her.
Edit: In lost, the "Who put the fate of the world" They are trying to stop a war from going on between the gods, Yes Percy's motive was to save his mom, but that wasn't the others goal. I hope you understand.
Edit 2: Girl you crack me up.
Edit 3: they aren't hallucinations or regular dreams, they are called Demigod dreams, they're like visions, basically demigods can see past, present in this case, and future, that's what those are.

    Hi!
If you want to fully understand, you'd have to read the book. The musical adaptation is really good. There are movies, but if you have read the book, you'd know they are garbage adaptations. The original author is making a series on disney + but that won't come put for at least a year. I really do suggest the books though.

I understand the frustration with Percy complaining a lot, but there’s also something you should note. He’s 12 years old. Every twelve year old wants to complain about a perfect life. Imagine having a life where you had a “dead” parent, a terrible stepdad, an absent father, nobody wanted to be your friend, 6 schools in 6 years, and constantly having weird things happen. Yeah, in my opinion he has a reason to complain, it’s fine if you want to disagree though!

I read the book about 10 years ago but couldn't get into the sequel. The movie adaptation wasn't great; but I came across the musical this past week, listened to the soundtrack and watched a recording. It's impressively faithful to the book as far as I can remember, and made me like the characters even more! I also have ADD and know many neurodivergent people, so it's cool to see that representation. The story basically reframes AD(H)D and dyslexia as superpowers, things that help the characters focus in battle and read ancient Greek. For young kids (the main characters are 12 at the start of the series), that's pretty empowering.

This musical is a treasure of book references for the fans, but peoples who didn't read them and just listen to the soundtrack only will be lost.
It's like, if you listen to the soundtrack of Mean Girls or Heathers without having watched the movies, you're totally lost.
And since they didn't change stuff from book to musical like Be More Chill did, you NEED that original context, which here is a book series instead of movies.

There are a few bootlegs on TH-cam that come up if you search “the lightning thief the musical full” and I’d suggest watching the Broadway version that’s around and hour and 45 minutes long. You can also find the original 1 hour version that’s got some different songs like In The Same Boat and it’s split into a few 15 minute parts.

the show started as a one-hour musical with a target audience of middle schoolers... but the creative team reworked it until it eventually became a two-act musical on broadway for a limited run with most of its target audience being fans who grew up with the books and/or the development of the show

Through the series it does get more mature so while the first series may seem childish, the sequel series does get a little more mature. There's about 10 books in all of them and they are really amazing. Plus, they are making a Percy Jackson TV show for Disney + that's been officially confirmed to be accurate and it'll have a higher budget than WandaVision which is crazy!!! Ahhh I know this video is kind of old but I’m new to the channel and a HUGE fan of this musical so I wanted to give my two cents
So I got to see this performed on Broadway and as someone who was mildly obsessed with the books throughout middle school I was super hyped and very much the target audience. I will say it’s kinda hard to grasp the plot of this musical when only listening to the soundtrack mostly because there is just so much that happens on stage. It’s a small cast so aside from Percy and Annabeth everyone is double cast but that doesn’t stop them from making the stage look absolutely alive in every scene, certain lines are taken directly from the books yet the lines specific to the show never fail to make me laugh (ex: Grover shows up with his goat legs, which are essentially just furry pants, and yells something like “Ms. Dodds was a Fury!” To which Percy responds with “You’re a Furry! What is going on” which was just hilarious) and they stay really true to the lore of the books which is hard to do when condensing the material down to fit just 2 hours. There’s a lot of puppetry for some of the practical effects yet it also has a charming homemade feel about it, like in the musical Cats where they use junkyard items to put on their little performances, but instead it’s like partially stuff that you’d find on the street in NYC and partially the stuff you’d expect to find at a high school theatre department which fits the vibe since they’re kids, it’s genuinely such a wonderful show and if you ever get the chance to see it then take it because it is such a different experience then just listening to the soundtrack

  • @tiredenby705

The books are significantly better than the movie. If the movie wasn't an adaptation, it would be a perfectly average action movie. However, it IS an adaptation and it changed 99.9% of all the details, so if you want to consume the Actually Good Percy jackson content, read the books.
Also, the song "Good Kid" is the way it is because it comes after Percy gets told "Hey, Zeus thinks you stole his lightning bolt for Poseidon and if you don't get it to him by the summer solstice which is about 10 days from now, World War III mixed with the Trojan War is gonna start, so you, a 12-yr-old boy, will be going on a quest to the Underworld because I, a millenia-old centaur, think Hades took the bolt. Also your prophecy straight-up fail on your quest and ever since you were claimed people have kind of avoided you. Go save the world kiddo!"

Re: "He's still going on about it," It's probably not apparent to someone unfamiliar with the books, but the kids are supposed to be 12-year-olds. As a 50-year-old who has been working with 12-year-olds for 25 years, there's a fair difference between living through trauma and abuse as a preteen versus "c'mon, Man, we've all had hard lives..."
But also, the Percy in the book doesn't show nearly as much of his trauma in the first book. And one of the things I liked the most about the show was that it focused less on the travelog aspect of the narrative, which I thought was a little bit poor in terms of pacing, and that it shifted to a focus of dealing with trauma workout losing the heart of the characters or the narrative. Also, to be fair, i only saw a one hour kids' version with my 7yo two weeks ago, and had to find the soundtrack and the full version.

Percy has every right to complain because his whole life he has felt neglected and every time something goes wrong he is blamed for it. He had tried to hide how he felt for the sake of his mom, but when she was taken away, he didn't know how to deal with the fact that he is being blamed for stealing the bolt. In the book, when she "died" he said that the world shall never be beautiful again. He was mad at everyone, specially his dad because he has felt neglected by him and thinks that the only reason he claimed him is because he needed him to prove his innocence. Nesides, he isn't truly women at camp because he could be salvation or the doom of Olympus when he turns 16. I like how "Good Kid" shows that he is dealing with some level of depression because we don't really see much of it in the books since they are written in a humorous writing style.
