Gunil (drummer) is fluent in English as he studied in America for a number of years! The other members are also pretty good as Gunil helps them to work really hard at it, they all want to be fluent eventually so they practice a lot. It's funny you mentioned Jooyeon's English as he is probably the least fluent of the bunch conversation wise, his pronunciation is great for what he knows though!

Jooyeon said he grew up singing ballads and listening to his mum, who sings even better than him apparently lol perhaps that has influenced his singing style. Similarly jungsu loves pop music and mentioned bruno mars, justin bieber as musical idols. Honestly when they debuted only jungsu's vocal stood out to me cuz he has such a clean pretty tone. Not until their covers and first album release i realised how versatile singer jooyeon is. Whilst jungsu is a perfectionist, jooyeon experiments and pushes his limits which doesn't always work out for the best haha cue him loosing his voice during freaking bad. But this is why i love them both equally cuz their strength and weakness really makes them work well together without one outshining the other. interestingly, jooyeyon has a more soulful singing style he interprets the music very well, never sounds monotonous and uses a lot of techniques. his voice live is stronger than jungsu who was born with a thick voice which is crazy. he is definitely one of the artists who do the best performances live, his presence and voice is a powerhouse. it is rare to find such versatile vocalists especially in kpop. the guy is damn talented. it's been a long time since i've heard such a versatile voice in kpop as his. it's not an art to be born with talent, it's an art to develop talent and i think this guy can be someone great in this industry
I don’t know if you’ve heard their cover of Impossible by nothing but thieves! I would love to see your reaction to it. Truly one of the covers that made me realize their vocal potential. It was recorded predebut too I think which is even crazy!

Gunil is the one who is fluent in English. He lived in the U.S. for about 10 years and attended the prestigious Berklee School of Music on a full drum scholarship.
You saw Jungsu and Jooyeon's Rising Voice live performance which you really liked, so you have seen how much Jungsu has grown as a vocalist. Interestingly, he is the only one of the six who came to JYP through open auditions. He said his try out number was 2000-and-something, so he thought he had no chance and just sang all out freely. He became an idol trainee and said always having to pass his performance test made him just focus on pleasing others and doing everything right and he lost the joy in it all. Then a manager saw him playing a piece on the piano, and they suddenly told him he would be in a band after he had trained to dance (which he is really, really good at) and sing for years and really lost confidence in himself having to start all over, so he has had a long journey to gain his confidence back. Recently on the Kiss the Radio show, YoungK pointed out that Jungsu always seems to get the most technically difficult parts of the songs.
Jungsu and Joo really complement each other's styles and strengths and weaknesses. XH is very fortunate to have them both. Like you said, even the secondary singers would be the lead in any other group. To have two top notch vocalists - it just phenomenal, and our ears are blessed every time they sing.

8:10 That Tomboy cover is possibly my fav thing they've EVER done. Fun fact, they arranged it themselves. The drums stand out bc Gunil is actually a classically trained drummer who went to Berklee College of Music (one of the top 5 music schools in the US) on scholarship for drumming. For the vocals, Jooyeon actually said pretty early on that he wanted to learn how to do full on metal growls and screams, and everyone thought w/ them being technically under a kpop label that he'd never be allowed to do that. While it is possible to do healthily it's still really difficult and can put a strain on your voice long term if you're not super careful. But then he's screaming all over Freakin Bad and they said they want to experiment w/ even heavier sounds so I'm keeping my fingers crossed for monster voice Jooyeon in the future lol.
10:58 I also prefer the lower tones in pretty much all of their voices, but the range is insane. And I absolutely adore the richness of Gaon's voice here, it's so soothing. Plus his bubblegum hair era was ICONIC (and matches your logo actually!) 🩷💙
11:52 Everything you said here is so on point, and is why Jooyeon is my absolute fav vocalist right now. Jungsu can absolutely blow you away w/ power and skill, but kind of like Jongho from Ateez I'm not sure he's always connecting w/ the feeling of the song and sometimes it can almost feel kinda like thunder w/out the lightning, if that makes sense (which isn't always bad, sometimes it's what the lyrics and song call for). But every time Jooyeon opens his mouth to sing he makes you feel it like only a natural performer can. No need to understand the lyrics or language, you'll know what the emotions are just from his voice.
17:45 So, they all speak pretty good English, but as far as I know Gunil is the only one who's fully fluent bc he moved to the US w/ his family in middle school and lived here thru college. As the leader I'm sure he helps them a lot w/ their English lyrics, tho I think their skill with pronunciation mostly comes from them having good ears and grown up listening to a lot of western music. When they're asked about their favorite artists it's always a big range of styles: Gunil's fav band is Muse, Gaon always cites Green Day as the band that made him love music, Jungsu's idol is Justin Beiber, Jooyeon is maybe a little obsessed w/ 5 Seconds Of Summer, Ode has said that Day6 helped him learn to love band music, and Junhan admires guitarists from lots of different genres.
19:50 ngl, this broke my heart a tiny bit lol. This song is the anthem of my youth, it's the song that defined my generation as I experienced it, and if I had to pick my fav song of all time this would probably be it. Is XH's cover the best cover of it? Probably not. But as an anthem that's kind of not the point. It's an experience they get to share w/ the audience rather than a showcase of technical ability. There's quite a bit of crossover between MCR and XH fans, so lemme tell ya we lost our shit when they played this. Tho I do agree they would absolutely smash a Linkin Park cover, especially w/ Gaon and Ode's rapping.
21:00 For real, it's truly wild that their secondary vocalists Gaon and Ode could be lead vocalist in just about any other kpop group, yet XH has both of them on top of Jungsu and Jooyeon. And that actually could have almost happened, at least for Ode and Jungsu. They both joined JYP as trainees with the intent to be in a regular boy group. Dance lessons and all that. But like a year in they were suddenly pulled away to join the band project that would become XH. I know Jungsu already played piano but hadn't done so seriously since he was a kid, and I don't actually know if Ode already played an instrument or learning the synth as a trainee was his first time playing. They both really struggled and almost quit bc they were basically having to start their training over from scratch, but after getting close w/ the other members and finally getting confident w/ their instruments, they now both say this was the perfect path for them.
27:17 Dear H is from their 3rd mini album and you can really tell how much more involved they are in the composing and arranging of the songs on both Deadlock and the most recent album Livelock. Let the musicians actually playing the music make the melodies and you get better songs, or at least that holds true for XH. IIRC Junhan actually wrote most of Dear H.

Then there's their variety series Rock The World that's hilarious chaos, especially the kindergarden episodes. Beyond their channel, all their appearances on Weekly Idol are absolute gems. I think it was the 2nd one where they had the hosts gasping for air they were laughing so much. Actually, if u want me to make a list or playlist of all their best variety content, I might just do that...

I've watched this, probably, 8 or 9 times at this point because I love seeing the boys get their due appreciation. I think a lot of people hear the title tracks and go "oh not for me" (which is perfectly fine, we all have our tastes) but then they sort of write them off and don't get into just how talented they are. So its really a breath of fresh air to see you not only recognize, and appreciate, the talent but stick with it because I genuinely think they are one of the most talented/well rounded vocal groups out there. My hope for the next comeback is that they lead with a song that showcases that ala Pluto or Enemy. Something that really showcases them as talented vocalists as well as incredible artists.

Fandom name: Villains (I know,so cool). I don’t know if I like their own songs or their covers better. I (unfortunately) have to agree on the low quality of vocals in today’s kpop. It’s sad that a lot of it now reduced to visuals and dancing, which are of course obviously great but we are losing the main and essential element to a song which is singing. I just had a conversation with my friend and we were listening to some exo songs by chance on the kbs radio and we said how much we miss it right now because nobody really sings live anymore except some of my faves. Kpop feels like it’s fading away because of this and I have seen people pressed over unimportant things in kpop and not find good singers and live singing a problem. I know visuals sell but I can’t listen to visuals you know what I mean.😂 That’s why I LOVE sm groups while the company has some flaws they always have great singers and songs too (the production!!!)

People underestimate JYPE groups, but they definitely have some gems. Xdinary Heroes is one of them and considering they lean towards a harder sound, it seems they aren’t getting enough attention.

You’re a Villain Micah!!! Welcome to the fandom. Xdinary Heroes are in my top 3, along with Stray Kids and New Jeans. They’re incredible, Jooyeon’s voice blows me away, always has, it’s so full of flavour and feeling, and yes, definitely reminiscent of Brendan Urie’s voice. Jungsu’s voice has grown a lot since debut, he’s definitely become more expressive in his vocals. My god they’re so young, can you imagine how much they’re going to grow? I would love to see Gunil and Jun Han sing more, they have beautiful voices.

I think Jooyoun and Young K (Day6) have similar vocal talent, cos they both are awesome vocalists with crazy vocal ranges and I want them to make a collab. (And they both are bassists)

My little emo heart fell a little when you didn't like the My Chemical Romance song (it was like the anthem of my adolescent era lol) but I completely understand haha it's the opposite side of the spectrum of what you usually enjoy.

Personally I feel like to understand the unique vocal power&technique / band concept that is Xdinary Heroes you have to go back to their JYP predecessors, Day6!! Xdinary Heroes leans more into the idol image, as well as somewhat similar 4th gen BG punk/emo inspired aesthetics, but Day6 really paved the way in terms of having a band in Kpop under a major label, writing their own songs and playing their own instruments, and having absolutely beautiful voices. I know you weren’t particularly blown away by Young K’s Lee Mujin service, but I’m of the opinion that their voices sound absolutely angelic together and would totally recommend you do a deeper dive (sad that none of their songs you’ve heard so far have hit, but gurl their B sides…) to get more context on Xdinary Heroes!! (the positions are somewhat similar, for example, and you can definitely see a lot of influence in the tones that they use, how they complement each other) It’s just such a pity that over the band’s long enlistment/military hiatus one of Day6’s key members left JYP and effectively the band…Xdinary Heroes is definitely filling that hole in my life a little (in their own, unique way!) but yeah we stan the musical kings that are Day6

And many of the title tracks too! Like ‘I like You’, & ‘You Make Me’. As well as the OG ‘Zombie’ ofc.
They have a pretty amazing discography, and it’s like a hidden treasure when people dive in and find out 😊
i know that someone already mentioned that gunil is the one who’s fluent in english, but i feel like their pronunciation is also good because they listen to a lot of western rock bands too. jooyeon and gaon in specific listen to a lot of alternative music like mcr and fob. jooyeon is a huge 5sos fan and practiced using their songs often so that’s probably why his english pronunciation in songs is clearer.
I am so happy my introduction to XH was actually with a live performance. I had no idea who they were prior and I was instantly a fan, especially with Pirates. That song live. Damnnnnnnn
You made my day Micah❤❤❤❤❤❤ Jooyeon is definitely a star with that voice and presence. You are right about Jungsu (my bias 🤭). He's an amazing singer. Jooyeon even told him before that his pronounciation is very good but he lacks the emotion to express the feeling when he's singing. Luckily he's getting more expressive (and sometimes even flirty lol). It's really nice to hear your honest reaction to them. I hope you react to more of their songs ❤❤

oh the love me right, impossible - nothing but theives, drown - bring me the horizon covers are a must in my opinion! :) again great musical sense in the arrangement and great showcase of vocals. the talent is for sure a lot of groups that debuted around the same time as them vocally.

They are sooooooooooo talented and soooooooooooooo underrated
26:24 NAHHHHH Micah😭 he's Jun Han (Han Hyeongjun), and he is the main guitarist. He is genuinely so talented and leads most of the songs with his guitar. That's why it would make it difficult for him to participate in the singing. Same thing for Gunil (the drummer) we only really get his vocals at either the start of a song, or in intermissions when he isn't drumming. Jun Han is also probably one of the shyest idols you will ever find, like seriously. In debut he hardly spoke and just kept to himself so much that the other members were afraid he didn't like them 😭 Turns out he's just the most introverted man alive. He's grown in confidence over the years, so maybe we might hear some vocals in the future. But for now, he leads with awesome guitar.

I have only just recently gotten into Xdinary Heroes and I am in love. Their voices are INSANE! One of the first videos I watched of them was their recording video of Break The Break and I was in awe of Jungsu and Jooyeon's vocal abilities. One of their performances on Immortal Songs is amazing and I have watched it so many times. В мене навпаки склалась думка, що Джуйон, ще розвивається. Його голос не такий стабільний, він багато експерементує. На відміну від Чонсу, який вразив мене дебютною піснею. Думаю, йому ще буде, що показати) Люблю всіх хлопців. Але голос Чонсу для мене неймовірний. Він бере низькі ноти і одразу йде на високі. В каверах це не так чутно і все ж. Можливо місцями йому заважає висловити емоції його перфікціонізм, але стабільний вокал для мене більш важливий за все інше.
Синмін(клавіши) і Гаон мають більш стандартні партії, але це стабільність яка необхідна. Гоніль має прекрасні низькі ноти, але так як він барабанщик, це створює деякі незручності для співу. Так само і Джунхан.
Це найбільш співочий гурт, що я колись зустрічала. Напевно більш вразили мене хлопці, що робили кавер на Леді Гагу, не згадаю їх назви. Але вони більше схожі на оперних співаків 🤔

omg i've always thought jooyeon's voice has similarities to brendon urie's since i saw the xdinary heroes cover of impossible by nothing but thieves - there are some moments in there where they really sound alike
My favourite cover of theirs by far is still their Cover of Nothing But Thieve’s “Impossible”. (They did add an unnecessary rap part tho) Jooyeon sounds ridiculously good there. As a huge fan of NBT it’s honestly the best cover I’ve heard of the song. ^^

These guys apparently killed it today in London actually! At the Korea on Stage concert in Wembley. Saw a lot of tweets about them 😍 they even did a We Will Rock You cover 😆

Anyway I must agree with you, XH are eating these 4th & 5th gen girlies up! I’m a total Jungsu bias but Jooyeon just blows me away too; such an expressive singer. And at barely 21/22, they’re such powerhouses with so much growth ahead of them.
Besides checking out Knock Down, they also performed Pluto at NPop and that is def THE live performance to choose for that particular song.
That lead guitarist of theirs (Jun Han) is a real secret weapon too. Super introverted but super talented. He actually wrote Pirates and Dear H., so among the songs in this vid, those two are non-covers.

I was just rewatching your reaction to them yesterday so waking up and seeing this first in my recommendation was crazy LOL! Also I'm sure alot of people have mentioned other bands for you to check out, I really think you'd LOVE Onewe especially their main vocalist his voice is just so beautiful I only recently got into them and he's already one of my favorites vocalists, their songs Universe_ , Aurora, reminisce about all, and Still Here are what I'd probably recommend if you ever checked them out
Yes I love aurora already, it was one of my top songs in 2021 and was an honorary mention on my top 25 K-pop songs of all time.

I would totally agree with you XD are one of the best 4th & 5th gen group vocally and their is another group name N.Ssign which debut this year is a quick second who is serving vocals and I won't lie when I tell you I was shocked to my core because 4th & 5th gen is very disappointing when it come to vocals.

to compare skz vocalists to XH you need to listen to recent live clips of skz singing hellevator, they really are vocalists now. in saying this, I LOVE xh. both equally amazing vocals groups!
