With every listen, Maliketh's theme just continues to evolve for me. Knowing the lore, it really has a feeling of "the beast you're fighting is from a time long before you, and the gods feared this beast". When that childlike singing kicks in, and is slowly joined by the soprano... it's like you've awakened this once feared soldier. I imagined the cliche old man with a horrible past of death and destruction, who just wants to sit quietly somewhere, and you've awakened that part of him that he had buried. But the feeling is like... he's sad that you have? "Why have you made me bring this monster back?". It's just incredible.
At the same time too, the joining choirs after the childlike voice and the almost military drums almost make you feel a sense of duty. Not a sense of duty within yourself, but... within Maliketh. He KNOWS he is the last line of defense. He's the only one left between you and Destined Death. He cannot afford to fail now, even if he knows it's inevitable. So he fights to his last breath.

That’s interesting because I feel like the overall balance of the piece rather holds it back. Orchestration in video game music has been around for awhile, but Fromsoftware just brings a level of sophistication to orchestrated game music that just was not seen before in my opinion. There’s such amazing development and interplay in these tunes, motivic connections in bosses that are connected in the story, completely different sections to showcase different aspects of the bosses character or history, and incredible compositional and dynamic range across all these pieces. Fromsoft didn’t always have this kind of budget for their music. Demon Souls in particular is basically all synthesized and sampled, and back in 2007-08 when that game was being developed, that technology really was not ready for full orchestral compositions, and it shows in the game. I’m glad that Fromsoft is only getting more ambitious with their soundtracks, bringing in unique performers and groups for sounds that simply couldn’t be achieved in house. I can only hope it inspires other game composers to tell stories about the game world with the music, and to be obsessive about their compositions. You don’t need an endless musical budget to make a soundtrack hit like a Fromsoft soundtrack, you just need that obsessive nature and attention to detail, both big and small
27:07 i always thought that it sounds like the voices in the Dancing Lion soundtrack are the hornsent who were wiped out by Messmer. The Lion was their divine protector animal after all.
I really appreciate the Placidusax ost because of the clear similarities to the Game of Thrones Daenerys/Dragon sountracks as a way to show respect to GRRM and GoT as a whole. If you want to hear it for yourself I recommend listening to the GoT soundtracks called The Spoils of War and Dragonstone!
I’m a little disappointed that you didn’t like Godfrey, his phase 1 is one of my absolute favorites in the entire game. I just love the pace and the sort of “regalness” of it. It’s so good to me. But everyone has different tastes I totally get it. No hate of course. On a separate note I didn’t really appreciate divine beast too much until now, that really is an awesome track.
I've always found Fire Giant's theme the most intrigueing, not because I think it's the best one but because it's so forgettable. I'm not sure how. It seems to have all of the elements that the rest of the soundtrack does yet it blends in with everything else so harmoniously that it does not have an identity of its own, and that contrasts so heavily with the Fire Giant which really isn't like any of the other fights. Perhaps it needed a much more unique theme like Regal Ancestor Spirit.
I always assumed that was the point, Marika wanted everyone to forget about the giants and the flame in the mountaintops, and the fire giant just wanted to be left alone. He wanted to blend in but it’s hard when you’re one of the largest living beings in the lands between
I think Bayle the Dread is both improved and held back by its reliance on Igon‘s voicelines. There’s breaks and moments in there that are noticeably placed for the monologue. It does however convey some thematics excellently imo: it‘s like a mix of fury, regality and tragedy. It‘s like the emperor of china finds himself poisoned, and with blood already running from his eyes he still sits straight, summons his ministers, and in his fury goes full scorched earth and has all of them executed. It just oozes with „my prime may be past, but right now I‘m still king and you *will* have to pay the price for my head“
I'm glad you gave Starscourge Radahn some recognition, I think his phase 2 is the single best OST in the game, as you said it's fun to listen to. I don't see people often talk about it (though his theme is so fucking long people barely know it exists) I was so glad to hear a reprise of it for Promised Consort.
@MarcoMeatball I'm about half way through, I have to agree with your arguments... especially Fortissax. It was a track too for me that I first heard and I was like, this is noise. Then after multiple listens I was like WOW. Now I'm back to feeling like 'this is still a lot of noise'. The second phase saves it as I pretty much hate the first phase. If the first phase was more mellow, or melodic and less aggressive on the ears I think it wold be better. IMO Lady Maria is the best example of 'this is gonna be intense without letting up'.
Idk, true Mohg's and Godfrey's soundracks are S or S+ for me, It's my second and third favorite soundracks after Elden Beast from maingame. And Scadutree avatar A or S. Cause, it's erdtree avatar theme, but remixed, and with each phase becoming more and more sad. And fight, maybe not great, but I love fights with bosses, who fighting, losing their power more and more. Like Old Demon King from DS3, or cutted move of Issin from Shura ending. I mean, depending on context it's cool or sad, and details like this making bosses better for me.
It's great seeing Elden Beast at first place, it gives a sense of finality, of the end of a great journey, and i wouldn't have it any other way for Elden Ring's finale. Also i think the reason people (including me) like The Promised Consort so much is that it's heroic tone is in contrast to the entire rest of the game, and pretty much all other FROMSOFT titles for that matter. God this game has some bangers
Only disagreeing with promised consort. Should be at S+ just for being the most epic track ever created by fromsoft (I dont like comparing it with starscourge, as the tracks are too different). There was never such a good final boss theme.
Ancestors Spirit was the only bossfight i forced in the lenght because i couldnt get rid of this amazing masterpiece of music. Lucky me this bossfight is really easy in case and his attacks can be dodged pretty simple so i could focus on listening to the song while i was Forrest Gump xD
Those United In A Common Cause hits hard. I don't get the same "vibe" as you do though, with "hopefulness". It seems totally tragic and sorrowful...kinda reminds me of parts of Mozart's Requiem. Defo S or S+.
For me, I’m torn between Putrescent Knight and Divine Beast as my favorite, both in terms of music and gameplay. Divine beast, to me, is kind of evocative of Gilgamesh, specifically his battle with the giant Humbaba. You, like Gilgamesh, are an intruder in a holy place more ancient than you can know. The beast you fight has lightning in its breath and can summon forth the wind; whereas you have to simply rely on your strength and speed. It is visceral, intense, a primordial duel with a beast greater and more ancient than you could ever be. And then, when you defeat it, there is only silence; as you sit alone on the stagefront. Much like this, when the river of boiling blood from Humbaba’s severed head dries, the muscular, warlike language becomes silent. There it is, the end of the storm, repeated twice like an echo in nowhere. “A gentle rain fell upon the mountains. A gentle rain fell upon the mountains.” Putrescent knight feels otherworldly. From the haunting duet in his theme to the impossible ways he turns and moves, it’s such an eerie and beautiful fight. As the cello and soprano seem to fight for control of the song, you realize you seem to have slipped into this intoxicating dream, this world of purple fog where the air draws you to slumber, where fire freezes, where bones breathe, where the dead live anew. And then you are falling and the chords are rising, and you are breathing while the strings are dying, and the voice takes lead, then strings, then both, and then the boss is in the air and the horse is on the ground and you are made to weave between them frantically. Every single swing is uncanny, bizarre, uncomfortable, yet perfectly the same. You learn the almost mechanical movements, and become a machine in yourself. It is a game of call and response, it is a duet of blades as well as instruments. Thanks for hearing me yap ❤
Guys can someone explain to me what he means when he says "it's loud" as a negative? Honest, i can't imagine what he wants to tell with that, please T_T

I'm posting this same comment again, here. Cause I think it's relevant and I think it'd be super cool to her your thoughts on this. =) Yo! I just realized that Elden Ring and Dark Souls are probably quite literally and directly inspired by Der Ring des Nibelungen by Wagner. Tell me that Alberich is not the furtive Pygmy. Also A legend of Zelda was originally supposed to just have Bolero playing on repeat. Later in Dark Souls 3 they recreated bolero's structure in the music for the dancer. No wonder you love video game music, video game music loves opera

I have a mental image of Those United in Common Cause. This shouldn't be happening. Nobody wants to be there. Only one of them wants to do this, and even then, they see it as an odious chore. No gods. No kings. Only mortals, fighting for what they believe is correct. Right or wrong.
My opinion: DeS is either very good or mediocre, and yet One who Craves Souls is a masterpiece that blows most of ER out of the water DkS1 is arguably the most memorable, although it doesn't have many particularly outstanding pieces DkS2 is probably the worst, with a handful of very good pieces as usual BB is amazing, as memorable as DkS1, almost as good as DkS3. Destroys ER DkS3 is one of the best OSTs in VGM history. Yuka Kitamura peaks here. Some of the most mind blowing music ever, a complete masterpiece of a OST... which lost to Overwatch at TGA Sekiro is nice when you play it, but it's the kind of music you tend to forget it exists when you relisten to Fromsoft themes ER is just... underwhelming. All good music, way less hit or miss than, say, DkS2 and DeS. And yet, just like Sekiro, you tend to forget most tracks. The highest climaxes aren't comparable to DkS3, except for Saitoh's masterpiece and few others. The DLC brought many more great tracks to the table, but so did DkS3 and BB DLCs. The best thing about it is its variety Overall, ER's main theme gave me insane expectations, that sadly weren't satisfied with most of the rest of the OST. I hope the next big Fromsoft game goes back to its roots, retaining DkS3's melodic importance, giving tracks actually memorable melodies. I appreciate ER's shift in tone, from darker themes and horror to an equal variety of heroic (new thing for Fromsoft), dark and horror. Would love to see the next game experiment just like ER, although I definitely wouldn't mind a return to cathedral music a la DkS3.

Midra’s is the best hands down
Orchestration in video game music has been around for awhile, but Fromsoftware just brings a level of sophistication to orchestrated game music that just was not seen before in my opinion.
Honestly the fact that igon was the dudes first ever voice acting role is crazy
He's got that begginer's effort in him
Glad to know I'm not the only one to prefer Starscourge Radahn over Promised Consort. Starscourge is just so well-put together and emotional.
My theme crazy ngl
27:07 i always thought that it sounds like the voices in the Dancing Lion soundtrack are the hornsent who were wiped out by Messmer. The Lion was their divine protector animal after all.
The female choir is a reference to the hornsent that talk in the cutscene
Completely agree with you.
But hey he liked the lord's apparition which is basically Godfrey's theme but just vocals
Completely agree with what you said about dancing lion, whenever I go running I have it playing on a two hour loop lmao.
He wanted to blend in but it’s hard when you’re one of the largest living beings in the lands between
I've always felt like his theme works well enough. Phase 2 is memorable for me, it sounds exactly like fighting a giant.
I don't see people often talk about it (though his theme is so fucking long people barely know it exists)
I was so glad to hear a reprise of it for Promised Consort.
I have a SUPER boring editing project to do today and this video just made my day so much better.
I'm so glad!
IMO Lady Maria is the best example of 'this is gonna be intense without letting up'.
dude... the radon and elden beast theme gives me chills its so good
Idk, true Mohg's and Godfrey's soundracks are S or S+ for me, It's my second and third favorite soundracks after Elden Beast from maingame.
Its a good thing that the dancing lion has such amazing music because I fucking hate that fight
Holy shit i forget how hard Godskin Duo goes🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥
Foreskin duo
Is reacting to Dark souls 3 sound tracks on the table ?
35:56 you can hear marika shattering the elden ring, and shortly after radagon attempting to repair it until the song ends
Thanks for this marco, truly makes me feel like a boss😂❤❤
The opera on Godfrey's theme is much better in game than it is in the official release
Only disagreeing with promised consort. Should be at S+ just for being the most epic track ever created by fromsoft (I dont like comparing it with starscourge, as the tracks are too different). There was never such a good final boss theme.
The Consort theme song is number 1. Simply amazing! ❤
If im correct astels music is a huge reference to some big musical nimber based off of space and the planets which is why its so "spacy"
My top 5
1. Midra
2. Messmer
3. Elden beast
4. Promised consort
5. Radagon
I like the putrescent knight too. It's really underestimated.
Oh, haha! I just got super into elden ring stuff again like 3 days ago and all of a sudden ur reacting to it, that funny
Rea;;y surprised you placed Melenia as a B, listening to her soundtrack literally gives me goosebumps.
A gentle rain fell upon the mountains.”
Putrescent knight feels otherworldly.
I think ppl like godfrey because of the game play. How godfrey attack with the music beat sounds so nice.
Messmer is the best one by far
Def. my favorite, and the most narratively rich.
Guys can someone explain to me what he means when he says "it's loud" as a negative? Honest, i can't imagine what he wants to tell with that, please T_T
A timestamp would be nice
Hey Marco! Ive been watching your videos for a while, and Id like to know if you could react to this: The Witcher 1, Kaer Morhen (and old manor) theme. It might be my favorite video game of all time, but it is so unknown because nobody plays The Witcher 1 anymore hahaha Great video as always!
you should listen to the Garn47 OST! :)
Yet another 10/10 macro meatball video many meatballs were macroed in this one
Promised Consort #1 easily imo. Plenty of very good ost (not as much as in DS3 though)
I'm posting this same comment again, here. Cause I think it's relevant and I think it'd be super cool to her your thoughts on this. =)
Yo!
That’s exactly what Elden Ring is!
@@MarcoMeatball I fell into a burning ring of fire
I went down, down, down
And the flames went higher
And it burns, burns, burns
The ring of fire, the ring of fire
-Brünnhilde/Melina
Man, would love to see this but with the other Souls games
Divine Beast Dancing Lion is easily my fav
React to the songs from shin Godzilla: Persecution of the masses, Black angels, Defeat is no option, and Who will know. They ARE in English.
Finally someone agrees that stars courage radahn theme is better than the promised consort !! The final part of it is one of the best parts that I have ever heard
57:32 as a person living right next to vatican city I literally go around Rome pointing at catholic art and saying "Elden Ring reference", hell marika is even crucified AND pierced by a lance, what else do people need to get the reference? Do you need her to have a beard as well?
Oeh regá bello vede un Romano qui 😉
@@MarcoMeatball daje Marco, sei il numero uno
@@giuuig hahaha Ottimo sono felice. Mangiame una bella fetta di pizza con patate oppure un suppli
Romina being THAT low has got to be a genuine crime 😭😭
Loved this longer styled video tho!!!! It’s awesome hearing your insights into a lot of tracks I would’ve maybe never given a chance.
I have a mental image of Those United in Common Cause.
This shouldn't be happening. Nobody wants to be there. Only one of them wants to do this, and even then, they see it as an odious chore.
No gods. No kings. Only mortals, fighting for what they believe is correct. Right or wrong.
tell me you have no idea what youre saying without telling me
him: *puts placidusax theme in B tier*
God Midras theme is so good🙏
Don’t let this guy cook again
My opinion:
DeS is either very good or mediocre, and yet One who Craves Souls is a masterpiece that blows most of ER out of the water
DkS1 is arguably the most memorable, although it doesn't have many particularly outstanding pieces
DkS2 is probably the worst, with a handful of very good pieces as usual
BB is amazing, as memorable as DkS1, almost as good as DkS3. Destroys ER
DkS3 is one of the best OSTs in VGM history. Yuka Kitamura peaks here. Some of the most mind blowing music ever, a complete masterpiece of a OST... which lost to Overwatch at TGA
Sekiro is nice when you play it, but it's the kind of music you tend to forget it exists when you relisten to Fromsoft themes
ER is just... underwhelming. The best thing about it is its variety
Overall, ER's main theme gave me insane expectations, that sadly weren't satisfied with most of the rest of the OST.
Marco I forgive you for putting Rykards theme anywhere other than S.
...for now.
2:21 that vigor is atrocious 💀
Some placements just prove Marco got taken over by spaghetti. Or should I say Macro
good list. But I think Romina's theme a bit too low. I appreciate maliketh placement (considering how community underrate this piece), it's my top 1 theme from all fromsoft games.
CUUUUUURRSSSEEEE YOOUUUU BAAAYYYLLLEEEEEEE!!!
I hereby vow, you will rue this day! Behold, a true drake warrior! And I, Igon, your fear made flesh! Solid of scale you might be, foul dragon… but I will riddle with holes your rotten hide, with a hail of harpoons! With every last drop of my being!
(Also not putting Mohg’s ost in S is evil)
putrescent knight ost also resembles alot to Maiden Astraea from Demon Souls ost
Placy was never a big bad. He was actually much more of a good guy, i mean, he was the first elden lord.
Do Ds3 ost next boss!
2:04:43 while I firmly believe the final boss of the DLC should have been Godwyn in the context of the base-game’s lore, I cannot deny that PC Radahn’s theme slaps
NO WAY BRO PUT PUTRESCENT KNIGHT IN S+ BUT ALL OF THESE GOD TIER SONGS LOWER. How can you put Romina in C but Putrescent knight (literaly one the emptiest themes in all Elden Ring) in S+
Because I like it better
🗿
@@MarcoMeatball Sure, beauty is in the eyes of the beholder I understand... but by that much?
@@FlawlessCoja I really meant this one! I love it!
@@MarcoMeatball Id agree that its one of the best out of all the quiet and slow paced ones like Astel or Rennala but for me personaly its not up there. Maybe its just me liking the stronger beats and rythms, tho i do like Rennala's and i love Regal ancestor spirit. Cant help it but find Putrescent knight kinda empty and unfinnished. Still, love your content, keep it up. 😘🩶
Mogh all the way
Yeah of course some objectivity wrong opinions here and there but still thank you for sharing your thoughts😉👍
No worries!
Regal Ancestor Spirit is too low. Majestic OST.
Godrick, the dumbest boss in the game (lorewise) and one the best ost's...just Absolute cinema from Miyazaki! And our boy Starscourge Radahn got, again, the justice that he deserves...RIP great lion. Putrescent Knight is a fair choice to S+ too, this ost remembers me a lot the old Demons Souls OST style. Spot on about Rominia, too much Malenia. She is just a way From got to insert the rot theme in the DLC. Nothing special
How is godskin not 1st smh
Day 5 of trying to make @MarcoMeatball listen to the Valkyria Chronicles OST
3 hours… I’m in 😎
Lock in
radagon only S😳godskin so low 😳
Where Deathkindred bird OST?😭😭😭😭😭😭😭
He said only remembrance boss themes.
@@anonisnoone6125 And then proceeded to react to Death Knight, Godskins, Crucible Knights, Erdtree Avatars, Margit, Goldfrey, Tree Sentinels, Basic Dragons, Red Wolf, Jori and Those United In Common Cause :D
Makes me sad how mediocre the ER DLC stuff was overall
who is the guy doing the gameplay in the back? Loved the video but the gameplay made me throw up LMAO
