- March 17, 2023-Toronto-The Honourable Sean Fraser, Minister of Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship, announced that international graduates with a recently expired or expiring post-graduation work permit (PGWP) will qualify for an additional or extended work permit to stay longer and gain additional work experience for up to 18 months. The PGWP Program allows international graduates to obtain an open work permit to gain valuable Canadian work experience.
How to opt in to a simplified process to get a post-graduation work permit
Starting April 6, 2023, these measures will allow PGWP holders who wish to stay longer to opt in to a facilitative process to extend their work permit and will allow Canada to retain high-skilled talent.
Foreign nationals whose PGWP has already expired in 2023 and those who were eligible for the 2022 PGWP facilitative measure will also have the opportunity to apply for an additional 18-month work permit. Those with expired work permits will be able to restore their status, even if they are beyond the 90-day restoration period, and will receive an interim work authorization while awaiting processing of their new work permit application.

How to opt in to a simplified process to get a post-graduation work permit?
You may qualify for a special measure that makes it easier and faster for you to get an open work permit. If you’re eligible, we’ll email you an invitation to opt in to this process.
You must opt in through your IRCC secure account before May 20, 2023. Be sure to opt in before your work permit expires.
In most cases, we’ll mail you a new work permit by the end of June 2023. There are no fees for this work permit.
Opt in period begins April 6, 2023
What you need to do
Check your email, including your junk folder, for messages from an email address that ends in @cic.gc.ca or @notifications.canada.ca.
Review the conditions in the letter and make sure they apply to you:
You reside in Canada.
The mailing address on the letter is correct.
Your passport information is up to date and has an expiration date of June 2025 or later.
Log in to your IRCC secure account and select Post-graduation work permit holder: Extend your open work permit (up to an additional 18 months) and opt in to stay and work in Canada for up to an additional 18 months.

Hello, I need your help, please. I have to apply for a PGWP extension because my passport is expiring in Feb 2024, so my PGWP is expiring, too. I'm unsure how to reply to answer #3 of form 5710. Hi, thanks a lot for the informational video; I received both emails from IRCC. Now my earlier passport expires Nov 2024; hence, I recently applied for and received a new passport with an extended validity till March 2028. Do I need to update my passport number before opting in? If so, how and where can I update my passport information? Please help me.

Hello sir, I got email for opt in but I do not want to opt in because my work permit is valid until Nov 2023. Can I submit application for extension so that I can get extension from the time my pgwp expires? Because I have heard people who are opting in are receiving new work permits from the time they opt in.
Also, I recieved email for interim work authorization though my sin is expiring in Nov 2023. Will I able to work interim work Authorization until I recieve my extension even if my sin expires?

It says work permit extension for additional 18 months. But I got 18 month from the date of application. My current work permit expires in 20 August, 2023 and I got extension till 12 October, 2024.
Any idea why short period of extension?

Unfortunately IRCC changed the regulation instead of correcting the errors. Now as per the changes, 18 months extension will be issued from the day of "Opt in"

My WP expired on April 6, applied for visitor record and it’s approved. Now when I apply for 18 months extension under this new programme should I give my status as visitor or work permit?
As per the instructions, if PGWP expired, you should pay the restoration fees and apply online for the WP extension

In fee section, when we select i am exempt from fee, they said update information. What we need to provide there??
Same. They asked me to provide proof of being exempt from the work permit application fee ($100). I already have my PGWP (expired in May 2022) ... should I provide that as a proof that I am exempt?

Hi Renso! You don't have to do anything. The email is your interim work authorization.
