  • I've got a nice variety of things packed into this video about my off grid homestead in Portugal! Some cooking, catching up on lots of odd jobs, a tip to the lake, and I make a mistake but it turns into me doing a job I've been avoiding for ages... so it's all good!
    My friend Kimberly makes an appearance in this video to help cook up some plums and overall it's a fun video with a lot going on!
    I hope you like it, thanks for watching!

    I'm Kirsty and I'm novice builder attempting an off grid stone barn renovation here in Central Portugal. I love going slowly, learning along the way, and trying new things as I attempt to build a beautiful tiny house using natural materials.

    Trees like a really good feed when fruiting.
    Leaf curl is a fungus which needs to be dealt with before leafing each year. There are organic products.
    While pear branches are flexible using soft cover and ropes on the branches you can weight them down to the shape you want, but if the flexibility isn't there, it will testruct how much you can do that.
    Strimming around the citrus will reduce the competition in the root zone.
    Most are looking fabulous 👌

    Left my hose on and emptied 27,000 litres of water. (i Have three tanks two connected one not and thankfully it was the single) I only get water from rain, and this is for everything. My trees were great that year but veggie beds were drowned. Your trees are looking so good . I don't know how you do it all, plus video and edit . Lake looked lovely and no one there it seemed. Your veggie garden is looking so beautiful with all the paths just bleeding marvellous

    Hi Kirsty, I hope you have received the sandpaper I bought for you from your wishlist. But the real reason for commenting is re: the peach tree with leaf curl. My dear departed mother told me to find some horehound weed, pull it out roots and all and hang it in the tree with leaf curl. I know it sounds crazy, but it works!! (Well it certainly cured my peach tree in Australia)

    Yes that pear tree you have to put posts in with wire strands in between and you train the branches to run along the wire. You only choose a couple of branches to run and you apparently get a better crop and a healthier tree.

    Hello! Wow, I really love your little pool, there! And the lake! Perfect when you need to cool the core down on such hot days. Yellow leaves on your fruit trees are probably from a deficit in nutrients. So maybe give them some Comfrey-tea or a bag af horse/cow manure. The shape of the akward 2D Pear tree can be fixed with a little pruning. Just take one of the tall, straight branches and snip it off where there is an outward facing bud. Then the bud will start to grow a new branch i that direction. The downside is that the tree will be cut back quite a bit which will delay the forming of fruits. Good luck! (Love your balance of work and relaxing, by the way.)

    The 2 dimensional pear tree looks like an ornamental pear tree. They don’t bear fruit at all, and their growing habit is upright. They don’t grow outwards, only upwards. Best time to move it is winter after it’s lost all its leaves and is dormant, give it a prune in autumn. Relatively shallow rooted, but as they mature roots can push up to the surface. Can grow to 10metres. So find a spot where it won’t interfere with sheds, stonework over time. They seem to be pretty hardy & they like a sunny spot. But, do your own research for your area too. In the right spot I find them beautiful, tho not very permi! Cheers, hope your trip is going well! ☺️🌳

    Hi, I would love to know, if you don't mind to inform me, if your stone edification is a rural barn or a urban edification and registered as one.
    As you may know, lots of portuguese are without a place to live. And maybe there are such buldings registered as urban houses, and we don't know. It's absolutely forbiden to transforn a rural edification into a house, or a place to live. But, if such edifications exist, it could be a solution for the so many that have no roof. Will you answer me please? Thanks a lot!

    • @PortugalfromScratch

      I’m not sure there are so many homeless people out here in rural portugal. Many people are older and dying or the young people leave to go places where there’s more work. As far as why you can do on a piece of property, that’s always a question for a lawyer.

    • @semapelos
      @semapelos 17 วันที่ผ่านมา +1

      @@PortugalfromScratch Oh dear, I believe you misunderstood me, this is not a personal matter. In fact, nothing to see with homeless people on rural lands, but, people that can't afford having a space to live. I just wanted to know, if the Castelo Branco Municipality, is allowing those transformations or, are they just closing their eyes... I believe now, I know.
      We are glad that you all are able to have a roof over your heads, and are happy here, in our small country.
      The problem, you know for sure, is the fact that there are not enough houses, mainly for the young population, and rural land is much cheaper.
      It could be a solution to solve the problem. My question, asked to different munipalities, are a round denial. No one can transform a rural edification and live there. Here in Sintra/Mafra, it's impossible, and there are so much land....
      For us, the people, it was very surprising to know that abandoned lands, came to life again, in central and northern parts of the country. Even on places like Castelo Branco.
      The majority of people living off gridd, has a channel on YT to support their stay and expenses, you bet there are many.
      For me, I'm glad all those lands came to life again. I just asked a simple question, it stayed unanswered. I believe they just close their eyes....there are no authorization, at least is my believe! My sincere congratulations, for all your work, you are brave and strong.
      Please, don't take my question on a personal level, I'm glad you all are happy here, peace and love! 🫶🙏🙏🌈🍀🍀🍀🌸

    • @PortugalfromScratch
      @PortugalfromScratch  15 วันที่ผ่านมา +1

      I definitely don't know the ins and outs for what's possible on each type of property in each area of the country but I do know that it's possible to change the designation of a rural piece of land where the house footprint is to an urban article and then things can proceed legally from there. I suspect that cameras in this area are more likely to be open to this sort of thing than those in the Algarve, though. But getting a lawyer is key to doing anything like this and if you wanted to get more specifics I'd suggest asking them. It's a good question and anything that helps solve the housing crisis should be explore, I think.

      They're supposed to maintain the country roads but don't really make them a priority. The road at the side of my place is private, I think, and I generally strim the grass but that's a job for when I get back. We've had unusual rain so the grass is doing weird things this year. Few people drive down the road beside my place, there's a better road for those further down the valley.

      Hi James! Central Portugal is great, you should come check it out but we're not setup for volunteers. Maybe have a look at Keela Yoga Farm who are nearby and accept helpers? Or ask around in the local Facebook groups, perhaps? Best of luck!
