  • It's time for another video of my off grid life here in Central Portugal! This one is packed with stuff and Sinead is the star of the show as she helps me with a couple of tasks that I can't stand doing. Thanks Sinead!
    Plus we finally taste the lemon pickle after two months of fermenting, we start a bike gang, I get to a simple job that I've been avoiding for way too long, and I finally get into the garden finish up a few things that will complete the look for 2024. 😀
    I hope you enjoy it! If you do, please give it a like! Thanks!

    Hi Kristy, another great video, your 30mins+ videos never seem long to me. Great that you n Sinead both got bikes now, get some fun bike trips planned. Hopefully loads more companies send you cool stuff to test. Have you thought about making lids for the plunge pool like your dad did for the big tank? Would give you extra seating area when plunge pool not in use. Garden looks great, defo think woodchip instead of sawdust, hopefully it won't blow about like the sawdust will and you dont want to waste time watering your paths lol have a great weekend Woo x

      Fun times ahead for sure! Yes I thought about a deck over the pool awhile ago... I had people for lunch and the open pool seemed a bit sketchy. I think that'll be a project for next summer thought.

    I'm so glad the two of you now have each other to do things with, and develop your individual homestead dreams. I think it's a smart idea to buy the woodchips, then it will be done and finished with for the summer, and so much less weeding in the future. Deck area looks fun and cheerful.

    Hello Kirsty! I haven't commented in quite some time. I love the deck your Dad built. It suits the relaxation zone beautifully. I also really liked seeing the lineup of pots along the wall on your first terrace down. You really stepped up your propagation game. All of the little plants were so nice and tidy in two rows. They looked very happy and vigorous. Good for you :)
    If you can get a big tote of wood chips delivered I think that is a good decision. Based on the amount of landscape fabric you have to cover, you may want to ask about the delivered price for 2 bags. I'm thinking the giant tote bags, right? I think you can use that much. Chips will last a lot longer than sawdust. Plus you don't have all that wear and tear on your car running back and forth. If you have some left over, strim a circle around your favorite trees all the way to the ground and add a nice mulch ring. Remember the rule of 3's? 3" away from the trunk, 3 feet around the trunk (unless it is just a whip) and 3" thick.
    I'm back so you'll likely see more of my thoughts. All the best 👍

    • @PortugalfromScratch
      @PortugalfromScratch  3 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Hi! Glad to see you back in the comments. 😁 Yep they're giant totes and Sinead recently had a huge one of sawdust delivered that you'll see in tomorrow's video. She might use it for insulation but if she doesn't, I'll steal it. 😁

    Hey Kirsty!!! Fun video...that lemon pickle looked delicious! Love your "biker gang"...those ebikes are a great addition to your homestead. I had an idea for your spring water pool...perhaps put some landscape fabric/ geotech over it so no debris gets in it. You can easily pull the cloth off to dispose of debris. You are a powerhouse! Love your garden! That deck is a perfect gathering spot. Cheers from the homeland🇨🇦

    Hi Kirsty, We’ve been enjoying your videos for a few years now and appreciate the effort you make in producing the content and living off grid in Portugal. We live in the Azores and live vicariously in Central Portugal through you. 😂 We are writing today to request that you be extremely careful with your battery pruners. Yesterday, a friend of ours, who works five acres of land, accidentally cut off her left index finger and sliced her thumb. Like you, she loves her pruners, but they are also dangerous. Please only use them when you’re feeling alert and rested. Wish they came with some kind of safety. Anywho, keep up the great work and be safe.

    • @sarahnd
      @sarahnd 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Oh no! This is what I've been afraid of ever since I got the clippers. They close so relentlessly 😬 I use them for pruning grapevines, but always wear thick leather gloves while doing so. I did snip a bit off a glove once and now am even more careful. So sorry for your friend. Was she able to get the finger reattached?

    • @annbroderick5753

      @@sarahnd Hi Kristy, Glad you are wearing gloves. Good idea. The finger has been attached and they will know if it took on Thursday. Fingers crossed 🤞, no joke intended 😜. We have started to come up with possible nicknames for her regardless. Speaking as a former woodworker, it is good to have a healthy fear of these awesome tools. Prune responsibly!

    Having had over 7 semi truck size loads of woodchips dumped (twice) on our property in the last 6 years (& we have 1/2 left from the last time… we call it mulch mountain… it’s still over 6’ tall, prob 16’ wide & 20’ long)… & I’m a big fan of woodchips, I would think twice abt putting them over that “fabric”. I would worry abt the woodchips puncturing it where there’s foot traffic, then if you have any weeds that spread by runner like Bermuda & some other grasses, sheep sorrel, etc. they would LOVE to pop through any tiny holes, and runner rampantly through the wood mulch. Maybe you could do a test patch of the wood chips over the fabric & see if you get any punctures… & if you do… just say no to wood chips if you have ANY kind of weeds that spread by runner!!!!! They will find and get through the tiniest of holes & be more vigorous spreading through the wood chips cause you killed all their competition (the other weeds).

    • @PortugalfromScratch
