    Fiona, Thank you for your incredible tutorials! My first cane was your square dance cane. I played, paused, rewound, played, paused, etc... as I made the cane, it came out ok but I must have joined it wrong because I got no flower in the middle, just a diamond with some squiggly lines inside that didn't join up. Second try I got it right but my skirt ruffles are far more elongated than yours. Still, I was able to make pretty pendants and earrings and lots of beads from the scraps. So I have had a great start into caning thanks to you, confidence to continue on. I recently purchased some blown duck and goose eggs which I hope to get some done in time for Easter. Keep those tutorials coming, you are a great teacher!

    Thought I’d let you know how I am getting along. I’m about six weeks into making things. Having a few issues like making the long pieces of clay on 9 setting. It either tears (even going slowly and carefully!) or goes off to one side. I’ve managed to hold the clay in place and get a couple straight, however tearing remains an issue. I suppose practice makes perfect 😆 the main thing is I am really enjoying making things 😊 thank you so much for your advice and great videos 💜

    • @FionaAbelSmithPolyOriginals
      @FionaAbelSmithPolyOriginals  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I am so glad you are enjoying making things :) It is probably your machine on the thinnest setting that tears the clay, rather than you doing anything wrong. On some people's machines the thinnest setting is unusable in doing a long piece of clay, so just go up one setting, and that should help enormously. :)

      I am so glad you are enjoying the videos and starting to have fun with Polymer Clay 🙂 I get asked this question a lot, so here is the answer that I have saved to give to everyone😉 I hope it helps - good luck and have fun with the clay 🙂 The pasta machine I use is an Atlas machine, at home I use the 180 (a wider machine) and when travelling or on workshops, I use the 150. I have always used the Atlas machines and I find them very good for Polymer Clay. However, there are other very good makes, such as the Imperia machines, and of course those made specifically for use with Polymer Clay. Ginger Davis Allman, from The Blue Bottle Tree has a number of articles on Pasta Machines - thebluebottletree.com/?s=pasta+machines which may prove helpful in choosing a machine.
      Here is a link to an Atlas machine, (for reference only, as obviously there are many other places both online, and in stores where they can be found), and it is worth searching around till you can find a good deal on one. I hope that is of some help. www.amazon.com/Marcato-8320-Machine-Cutter-Instructions/dp/B0009U5OSO/ref=sr_1_3?crid=BPH5K7P26RQT&keywords=atlas+pasta+machine&qid=1556786279&s=gateway&sprefix=atlas+pasta+machine%2Caps%2C211&sr=8-3

    Thank you so much Fiona, for 2 years now I have been trying to make things out of clay. Struggling to make everything just so perfect, like the person in the video does. Thank you for showing us the little imperfections that won't matter in the end results. I now know I can actually make things and not keep starting over and over to make it perfect before I can move on to the next step. I got so discouraged that I quit last spring and now I'm ready to give it another go, following your videos. Hopefully you'll put polymer in your title, I would have found much faster. Bless you!

      Thanks Mary, I know I go fast, people have often commented on it when I go to Polymer groups, but I discovered that if I slow down, I go wrong - I guess we all just have our own natural speed that works for us. At least, as you say, when you have a video you can pause or re-wind as many times as you need. Thank you for your kind comments :)

On there you will find a playback video speed normal button. On there you can highlight the slower speed you wish to select to watch your video, select desire speed and hen go back to your video. I was just wandering where you got your cutters from ? I used a tortoise one but had to cut the shell out myself, it worked but I would like to use the cutters like you have. Thank you for the great videos, I will keep practicing and maybe gain enough courage to create my own cane patterns one day. 😊

    You probably already found your answer to this but just in case...Turtle vs. Tortoise. Tortoises and turtles are both reptiles from the order of Testudines, but in different classification families. The major difference between the two is that tortoises dwell on land, while turtles live in the water some or nearly all of the time. Sea Turtles have flippers or fins, fresh water turtles have fin shaped legs but the ends have feet, paws and claws far more suited to walking on land and rocks than sea turtles. All turtles can float and swim, tortoises can not, they would promptly sink and drown in water deeper than their head height. The larger of both live the longest. Sea Turtles live about 80 years, Giant Tortoises have been known to live up to 2 centuries. Whenever you want to know the differences between things or concepts, just put "vs" between the two on your internet search line. That's just what I did, I copied, pasted and paraphrased shamelessly for this...I am no expert on the topic.
    You turtle creations are precious!

    • @FionaAbelSmithPolyOriginals
      @FionaAbelSmithPolyOriginals  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks, in the UK they are known as Tissue Blades, as their original function was in surgery, skin grafts I believe, but elsewhere they have several different names, but the term blade is generally used, due to them being so thin all the way through, unlike most knives that are thinner towards the cutting edge, and then get thicker further away from it. I hope that helps :)

    Tortoises are land animals and turtles are more water animals but tortoises are considered turtles too...so, all tortoises are turtles but not all turtles are tortoises. You know, all thumbs are fingers but not all fingers are thumbs. Same with frogs and toads. All toads are frogs but not all frogs are toads. Sorry, I am rambling.

    Box Turtles can"t swim, they are extremely similar to tortoises...makes me wonder why they aren't called tortoises...but then there you go, the more you know, the more questions you have.
