  • The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) is preparing to prosecute top bankers in Nigeria for money laundering and other financial crimes. This announcement was made by EFCC Chairman Olanipekun Olukoyede during the 17th Annual Banking and Finance Conference in Abuja.
Olukoyede stated that the EFCC has completed its investigations into the involvement of certain banks and their officials in financial malpractices. "Very soon, you will see some banks and top officials being prosecuted," he emphasized. To align the Nigerian financial sector with global best practices, he argued, there must be stringent penalties for those involved in criminal infractions.
Olukoyede pointed out several malpractices in the sector, including foreign exchange manipulation, fraudulent charges on depositors, and money laundering. He highlighted that some banks have been involved in illicit financial activities with politically exposed persons (PEPs), damaging the integrity of the sector and the nation's economy.
The EFCC Chairman reaffirmed the agency's commitment to enforcing anti-money laundering laws and protecting the financial system from cybercriminals, both internally and externally. "We will no longer tolerate complacency in dealing with financial crimes," he warned, stressing that penal sanctions will follow any criminal activities within the sector.
Olukoyede urged banking professionals to adhere strictly to regulations and ethical standards, expressing concerns over the recurring involvement of some operators in financial crimes. He called on the Chartered Institute of Bankers of Nigeria (CIBN) to strengthen regulatory oversight to ensure compliance with banking regulations.
He concluded by calling for a renewed commitment to professionalism and ethical conduct to support the growth and development of Nigeria’s economy. "Look in the mirror and recommit to professionalism that supports the economy," he cautioned.
