- A faulty SSR-25DD Solid State Relay DC to DC
This was bought on ebay - in hindsight it is most likely a fake so I have not mentioned the brand here.
Anyway I bought two and both have hard shorts internally. The seller asked for a video to demonstrate the fault. Maybe I will get my $10 back.
Otherwise learn from my bad luck :-)
Thanks for sharing this. Thought I was losing it ... I've gone through 3 of these in the last 3 days. 1 was DOA (just didn't work), 2 others worked for < 1 day and then both shorted closed within minutes of each other. After finishing the project everything worked perfectly. The next morning ... not so much. I triple checked every single thing in my project trying to figure out what changed. Turned out it was the relays, even with no power at all have full conductivity across the supposed-to-be-seperated poles :(

I got a box (10) and 1/2 of them don't work. But different brand the blues ones..
The good one's have a totally flat back with no holes, bad ones have 2 screw holes..
Powered up the good ones show ~0.1 ohms both ways, the bad show >5 K ohms! no current flow..
You can open these ssr and change the tyristor inside ... change it to 40 amps is thisway easy.
I did it, it’s easy. The plastic is glued and you can’t break anything.

im waiting for my ssr40a to arrive but seeing these failure videos is just gives me a headache. do you think its worth spending around $30 for a proper panasonic SSR is a good idea? my load will be 5A and i bought a 40A unit. i left a huge headroom because i thought considering these are fake products it would be good to have a nice slack :)

I think that these are a bit hit and miss. I bought some that work and I bought some that don't as shown in the video.
I didn't buy any that work sometimes which is good. So they are either working or hard fault.
I think if you bought a few batches on ebay then you will probably have 50% or better chance of getting working fakes and overall still fairly cheap.
I have had better results using Aliexpress for some of this stuff as it is really direct from the manufacturer (or perhaps commercial seller at least). Perhaps buy some on Aliexpress and try your luck.

You can probably spend $10 or $20 bucks and you are fairly likely to get a refund though the system if the goods are faulty.

@@andrewduggan9002 thanks for the input. well i bought from these with the heatsink. i will use it for a reflow oven so it will constantly be switching the power thats my main concern but its only 5A. i think if it fails i will buy from those with PCB in the second link they are rated from 10A and dead cheap :) at least they give some sound to tell you if its working or not.
@Orhan I bought recently a SSR 40 A A but I had to send it back because it was defective. The input side was labeled 80-250 vac and the load side was 24 to 380vac. I was going to use it on a project that was going to control small amount of amperage (1.6 to 3 amps) and thought this was ideal being so compact and easy to install and wired. I decided that against a standard electromagnetic relay. I was going to use household voltage on both sides 115vac and the problem was that when the input was switched off, the load side was still allowing voltage through (51 vac) which made impossible to use. It was my first experience with it and it turned me off from buying it again. I will just stick with standard electromagnetic relays for now.
What’s a good way to test these in a panel without removing them?
Same way with a multimeter. If it if a good one it should not short the the panel anyway.

They are fake. I own authentic Fotek, they are great.
Is it possible the SSR causes gfci tripping? I have an espresso machine after water spilled on SSR the gfci tripping started. Even though, I let it to dry 48 hrs.
would be possible yes. This unit was faulty from factory not from water damage though, so your case is most likely different.
