  • WOOD magazine's Brian Simmons shows you how to turn a perfect sphere out of wood. Then he takes it a step further and teaches you how to hollow out the sphere too. Add a simple base and you've got a pet urn for your beloved pet. First, let's learn how to turn some simple reference rings before we circle back to the sphere.

Great video. I don't know what it is but when I use a lathe I always get catch and the tool flies out of my hands, even making sure the tool is solid on the rest. You make it look so easy

Wrong tools used the wrong way.
Making the sphere method was good but way too long.
A better video would have been on making a sphere jig & using it. Didnt show the proper sanding procedure to the same extent as the making of the sphere.
    A good project, though.

Thank you so much for the very interesting video on making a sphere..
47 years ago I worked for a bearing company called Torrington.
We made large spherical bearing race ways that had to have spherical inside and outside surfaces.
The name for what you're doing is called cross axis.
You can generate perfect outside or inside spheres by using a fly cutter and actually have the fly cutter running and move into the material that is spinning.
The radial distance from the center of rotation is the radius of the sphere.
Cross axis cutting or grinding generates absolute perfect spheres.

    What is Corina?

Corian is a brand of solid surface material created by DuPont. Its primary use is as a countertop/benchtop surface, though it has many other applications. It is composed of acrylic polymer and alumina trihydrate (ATH), a material derived from bauxite ore. Corian is the original material of this type, created by DuPont scientists in 1967.[1] A number of direct solid surface competitors to Corian have emerged since the expiration of DuPont’s patent on solid surfaces.
