    Nice videos man, it inspired me so much that i bought my first project. It's a 1983 KZ1100 ltd, not the best bike for a café build but it cost me only 150$. I am learning so much new stuff. Your videos helps a lot of us, even if it's not the same models, the principles are the same. Thank you!

    hey Classic Octane, i've been following you since I started thinking about doing some customisation on my own KLR650 and I think your videos are amazing. I've learnt a lot and i'm now about halfway through my own custom dirt tracker bike. I'm learning a lot about fabrication. Some of the terms you use are different over here in the UK but I normally get the gist of what you're talking about. This build was amazing and keep up the good work with the vlogging.

    If the neutral light issue persists, remove the wire from the LED and turn on the bike's off/on switch. Put your meter onto the wire and confirm that the neutral switch that's mounted on the engine is actually generating the signal properly. Shift into & out of neutral and watch the meter to see if the current is being sent properly to the LED.
    I've had a neutral switch go bad on me before and I've also had a case on my CB750 where the little ball in the switch had a piece of trash that had gotten into it and was causing the ball to hang up and not go back up to its full height. Hence, the neutral light never came on because the ball never disengaged from the little pressure plate inside the switch. Turned out to be as simple as depressing the ball and using a metal pick to clean out the top of that switch...then adding some oil and remounting the switch.
    Hope that helps.

    • @ClassicOctane
      @ClassicOctane  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Got it sorted. I replaced that LED with a new one with some heaver gauge wire and that seemed to fix it. I think my cheap LEDs from Amazon are not the best of quality.

      The closest I have come to a seat cowl is the Tuffside seats that have a hump on the back. I would love to make a custom one out of metal one of these days. I just need to find a good upholstery shop here that can finish it out for me. I tried my hand at upholstery once and I think I will stick to metal.

    I really would like to see how to lower the front forks and the rear. Do you think you will do something like this on your Triumpf?

    • @ClassicOctane
      @ClassicOctane  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      I may lower the forks on the Triumph but the whole rear is getting cut off and a hardtail welded in so that's pretty much going to take care of the rear. You can slide the forks up in the triple tree easily an get the front an inch or so lower. The rear can de done with shorter shocks.

    hey man been enjoying the videos and they have been a big help. have you ever come across a joint 3 way between the gas tank and the carbs? the part has been discontinued so i was wondering if there was another part that i can substitute with it?

    • @ClassicOctane
      @ClassicOctane  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The CB550 petcocks have two outlets that run to the carbs. One between 1 and 2 and the other between 3 and 4. If you just need a T joint you should be able to find some at your local auto parts store or online.

    LED's are kind of pointless for the warning lights since they aren't on all the time. My '75 550F has an LED headlight, tail/brake light, gauge lights, and front running/turn lights. All of those are on all the time and so there is a real savings in power consumption. Also the headlight, running lights and tail/brake are all much more visible in bright sunlight.
    Regular bulbs in the rear help the turn lights blink properly without needing resistors.

    I was not sure about the color combination during the build but now that it is done I like it a lot. I'm not a fan, for me, of the real low bars either. Probably because I'm a big guy. Quick question, I have a ton 1978 GL1000. The starter was bad so I bought a new one and a new solenoid for good measure. Installed them and turned on the bike. Everything worked great. Now 5 days later I try to crank it and nothing.
    Checked voltage at starter and is getting the full 13V. Same symptoms of the last starter. I jumped a wire straight from the battery to the starter and still nothing. But I had the fan wired straight to the ignition to turn on when key is on and that isn't working now. Any idea? I'm running out of ideas on what to do..

    I've notice a problem on my 1974 CB550 trabsmission, while riding it everything works great, except when I shift up to 3rd gear, it engages but when I start pulling the throttle it slips to neutral, I mean it revs but it wont move as it supposed, I have to shift up to 4th to get it going... it only happens with 3rd gear, any idea how to fix it?

    • @UhnTahoex
      @UhnTahoex 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Edgar Robledo it could be your shift forks. Im assuming since the problem is only on 3rd the dogs on it are worn out which happens alot on older bikes. If you look at the gears and if ANY are round or bent in any fashion replace them. Or it could be detent roller but I can remember which gear it fucks up on. But to be honest it is probably your clutch that needs adjusting. You be surprised how many times I teared a bike apart just to find out it just needed "outside" adjusting.

      Classic Octane on both this and the brown one where did you set the needles. If position 1 is bottom and 5 is top when in the carb body. I am running uni pods with 110 mains and fully rebuilt carbs with all new pilots needles etc. Float heights are set correctly. Dyna s and new coils. Just upped the mains and moved the needles from position 3 to 4. The bike runs ok at idle but like shit 1/4 and above so I'm thinking needles and I've done the 3/8 slide idle setting and have balanced the carbs. So frustrated. I get hanging rpm on throttle blips and crap power on the road. I go half throttle and it just bogs. It just puts along at about 10mph very sluggish. Thanks man cb500 BTW.

      Where is the gas pouring out? If it's the bottom drain tubes the floats are most likely getting stuck and not cutting off the fuel flow.

    You need to add a fork brace. I see this too often pictures of new motorcycle builds with the front fender removed and there's no brace for the forks. The brace is incorporated into the front fender and when you remove the front fender you lose that. You need some sort of a front fork brace to help stabilize the forks at high speeds and prevent wobbling.

      You're not wrong on that, but you're not quite right either. A fork brace does stabilize the twisting of the forks, but this only applies for high speeds, for laid back everyday this works perfectly fine as well.
      But I would put one there as well, just for the looks. I think a small front fender looks way better than none at all.

      Yes but he plans on selling his motorcycle to someone else. Would you want the liability of knowing that you may be selling someone a motorcycle that's not properly built?

      I think it's just a little exaggerating since we're talking about a vintage 550 ;) You have some good thoughts, in general I totally agree with you, but in my opinion, worrying about fork-stability below 150 km/h is not that necessary ;)

      @tylermegehe 7 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      You are correct it's a vintage 550. The key word being "vintage".Take that old fender that he took off and turn it upside down and tell me what you see. It's more than just the fender. It is a fender and a brace both.

      Pretty good point! Would be interesting to hear, what the builder himself thinks about this topic!

    dumb question but if a motorcycle is running can you take the battery off or does it need it to run ?

    • @ClassicOctane
      @ClassicOctane  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      It needs it to run unless you wire the bike differently.

    You are running too much current thru the LED, probably all of them, probably are intended for a lower voltage. They must have a resistor in series with them that is not large enough. You can add a resistor in series, try 100-470 ohms or so. To be sure, measure the current thru one, shouldn't be over maybe 10-20 milliamps. Nice bike.
