Summary: Let's follow what these other countries are doing, without even understanding their economies and possible leverages. Oohh the US is doing it too, this is a must guys.
Actually, foreign companies pay tariffs. However, depending on the product, those companies can just pass on those costs. England has great public transport, so cars are a luxury good. This means Chinese manufacturers would have to absorb the tariffs to keep the cost low, or people will simply stop buying.
What exports does UK have to offer to China that they can't get cheaper from other countries? And why would China import manufactured goods when they can make it cheaper themselves. UK dont make cars for regular folks so why would they put tariffs on family cars?

The UK won't suffer from tariffs if they are targeted and part of strategic trade agreements. The UK can focus on protecting key industries, encourage domestic production, and use tariff revenue to support local businesses. Additionally, the UK can negotiate deals that lower tariffs on essential imports, balancing costs and reducing the risk of shortages.

As the second largest island nation by GDP, the UK has a competitive advantage in shipping. We used to possess the largest navy in world history, but we have now fallen ridiculously behind. We also have a competitive advantage when it comes to research and development (R&D) due to Russell Group universities and Oxbridge. That’s why the UK was the first country to create a COVID-19 vaccine thanks to Oxford. In the same way, the UK is the world leader in cancer research and treatment. Starmer just announced that he wants to use that competitive advantage to win the AI arms race, which could soon become the most lucrative industry in history.
It must be pointed out that China has biggest domestic car market in the world (~1.8 times that of the US). Its domestic car manufacturers had about 56% of market share in 2023, i.e. 44% were still imports. That figure is expected to approach 70% when 2024 statistics becomes available. However, 30% market share for imports is still not insignificant. So further growth is not something to be alarmed about.

Looks like our car industry is doomed. Even quality brands will suffer. China isnt buying them like they used to look at BMW and Mercedes. I guess we can all sell insurance?
If China sells us cars, we can sell China boats. As an island nation, the shipping industry is more up our alley, and we have a unique opportunity to be the world’s leader in carbon free ferries. investing in our shipping industry will also allow the UK to replace our ancient ferries and build a new larger fleet. We have a huge ferry shortage in Scotland which has resulted in some journeys to the Outer Hebrides only happening once or twice a week.
Without Tariffs the market determines more purely based on simple economics. So if the Chinese sells so much more cars compared to 10 years, that means they are offering a better product.
The UK is far better at services and should focus on this. Reindustrialisation is just throwing money away since we'd have to import people to work in factories since very few Brits would be willing to work such manual jobs at lower wages
According to the graph, the EU is UK's highest export market in both services and products. Brexit was such a strange choice. Essentially a living cost increase in exchange for "sovereignty" and "independence".
@dcoughla681 recession + tariffs and trade restrictions = higher prices of goods. That means less exports to your largest trading partner which can trigger a domestic recession. We are too connected unfortunately.
Trade between the U.S. and China grew in 2023, totaling $575 billion-$147.8 billion in exports and $427.2 billion in imports-resulting in a $279.4 billion trade deficit.
trade deficiets dont always mean a bad thing, it makes sense to buy a shirt from china that costs $3 and to sell for $15, rather than produce a us made shirt for $15 and sell for $27. Consumers can buy more, generate more sales tax, and companies profit more.
Actually, China do need the UK because decades of currency controls has now caused unsustainable debt. This has now caused China’s GDP growth to fall rapidly, so they need more imports to balance their trade surplus.

It will appreciate the value of the £GBP, which in turn will cheapen imports for everybody. It will also reduce the cost of repaying foreign debt, so the government will not have to introduce more spending cuts.
Wow Rachel Reeves that is a dissapointing and shockingly low number. Adding £600 million over 5 years would result in approximately a 0.035% increase in the annual export trade of the United Kingdom. we cant keep running China down and expecting good trade relations.

No! The UK actually has an enormous trade surplus with the USA. That’s why Donald Trump told Keir Starmer we need to import more LNG when they met at Mar-a-Lago. I don’t like Trump, but I have to admit he’s right. The UK has had an incredibly small stockpile of natural gas for many years now, so we desperately need emergency supplies for winter heating. We just have to accept as a country that land-intensive industries, like farming, will have to be abandoned if we’re to ever start growing again.
Makes sense why musk is against the government here it's all about electric car competition.
Until Reeves opens her mouth.
It is kinda sad to see an empire on which the sun never sets has been reduced to a lowly henchman.
UK worries China is using forced labor in the car manufacturing and human rights.😂😂😂😂😂
Can’t sell opium anymore
Summary: Let's follow what these other countries are doing, without even understanding their economies and possible leverages. Oohh the US is doing it too, this is a must guys.
The UK should start recognising British National (Overseas) passport holders as British Citizens
Britain doesn't make much, so how can they export much to China.
Who pays tariffs we do in reality tariffs are just another tax on the people
Actually, foreign companies pay tariffs. However, depending on the product, those companies can just pass on those costs. England has great public transport, so cars are a luxury good. This means Chinese manufacturers would have to absorb the tariffs to keep the cost low, or people will simply stop buying.
Play silly games, Win stupid prizes.
She has gone there with a begging bowel.
What exports does UK have to offer to China that they can't get cheaper from other countries? And why would China import manufactured goods when they can make it cheaper themselves. UK dont make cars for regular folks so why would they put tariffs on family cars?
We're running out of trading partners since we dumped the EU & America are about to show their true colours. 😅
There are MG cars sold in Malaysia, no doubt its chinese but i doubt UK can produce cheaper csr..
We need Chinese cars. They are better, more advanced and cheaper!
😂😂😂
Sure they are
lol they suck
We need higher unemployment in the UK, right?
Tariffs make goods more expensive to us , UK cant tariff anyone economy not big enough anymore just lead to empty shelves
If there is a Trade difference between the UK & China, what is the difference ? is it Size or Volume, this can mean Cubic size, weight, or monetary value, or actual net profit. Did the UK companies make a real net profit difference better that the Chinese ? ? I dont think anyone will really tell us ! !
@@chrislambert9435 I believe it is expressed in monetary terms . . .
@Insightful21 Mercantilism ? No more free markets , Thatcher should of done that with coal ? Or our steel industry ? .From a cheap plastic kettle to a top of the range ev , everything UK might aswell just be coal ?
@@chrislambert9435 Can only be money ? from what im told regular chinese, their lives have improved no end these last years , so guess things do balance out eventually ?
I like it when they do the weird leggy dance in front of the giant screen, holding an iPad in one hand and waving the other like they’re saying something important.
Big proponent of nuclear energy or just a reactionary? The idea that we'd have energy blackouts with good planning is silly, we're always going to maintain a natural gas reserve.
The UK don't even have visa free access to China. This makes it significantly difficult to form business relations for trade.
Can’t sell opium anymore 😂
Great stuff … no one afford buying anything anymore!
What is UK’s competitive edge in the global market?
UK still has a pretty competitive financial and service sector. But that is diminishing
MI6
China is rapidly improving while the UK declines. Maybe we should try and take some notes.
No tariffs are best for the consumers. We have enough tax inflation.
Good move by UK ..this will help UK back on track
It must be pointed out that China has biggest domestic car market in the world (~1.8 times that of the US). Its domestic car manufacturers had about 56% of market share in 2023, i.e. 44% were still imports. That figure is expected to approach 70% when 2024 statistics becomes available. However, 30% market share for imports is still not insignificant. So further growth is not something to be alarmed about.

Looks like our car industry is doomed. Even quality brands will suffer. China isnt buying them like they used to look at BMW and Mercedes. I guess we can all sell insurance?
What car industry . . . Pretty much all foreign owned.
Mostly owned by China 😂
If China sells us cars, we can sell China boats. As an island nation, the shipping industry is more up our alley, and we have a unique opportunity to be the world’s leader in carbon free ferries. investing in our shipping industry will also allow the UK to replace our ancient ferries and build a new larger fleet. We have a huge ferry shortage in Scotland which has resulted in some journeys to the Outer Hebrides only happening once or twice a week.
Without Tariffs the market determines more purely based on simple economics. So if the Chinese sells so much more cars compared to 10 years, that means they are offering a better product.
The GDP growth figure of 5% is the official Chinese figure…real figure closer to 1%.
Agreed . 🇨🇳 Real figure is 50% . 🇺🇸 real figure is 1%
Why would a 1st world country like china deal with a 3rd world country like the UK 😂
China will have lower growth in a few years time, and just wait for the bubble called China's real estate sector to burst!
I don’t believe any of this misleading propaganda.
The UK is far better at services and should focus on this. Reindustrialisation is just throwing money away since we'd have to import people to work in factories since very few Brits would be willing to work such manual jobs at lower wages
Do bussiness with China and don't be a victim of US hypocricy otherwise will be like Germany and EU position of economic fownfall
According to the graph, the EU is UK's highest export market in both services and products. Brexit was such a strange choice. Essentially a living cost increase in exchange for "sovereignty" and "independence".
I voted for Brexit 😇
Now that the economies of many EU countries are in trouble, what use is that to the UK? If Europeans can’t afford to buy our stuff, it’s pointless.
@dcoughla681 recession + tariffs and trade restrictions = higher prices of goods. That means less exports to your largest trading partner which can trigger a domestic recession. We are too connected unfortunately.
I find Western economics is an asshole.
Great China ❤ from Pakistan
Can't we export excess immigrants to China as they require a larger workforce in manufacturing than the U.K...?
Export them to your friend India.
The best strategy for UK is to act as a bridge between the largest industrial and financial countries
UK needs Beijing, however POWERFUL AND SOPHISTICATED BEIJING doesn't need the COLLAPSED AND DECOMPOSING UK AT ALL😂😂😂
Very well said!
Actually, China do need the UK because decades of currency controls has now caused unsustainable debt. This has now caused China’s GDP growth to fall rapidly, so they need more imports to balance their trade surplus.
If a country can build its space station by its own and progress day by day instead of being sanctioned, the country is absolutely the only legend of the World.Everyone knows that which country I am talking about.♥️🇨🇳♥️
Seems about right for this government. Probably want to ask about their social credit system.
What is this mythical social credit system that nobody in China heard of. What's your Experian score?
这个社会信用系统到底是什么东西?
I can feel Top Gear getting depressed
Honestly, what does UK export to China anyway? What does UK produces nowadays that can compete with Australia or New Zealand who are closer to China. I would advice UK to get back into the EU common market.
Summary - Bankers are going to get Richer while the working class suffers
The West is run by bankers but China is run by working class. Communist right? 😅
It will appreciate the value of the £GBP, which in turn will cheapen imports for everybody. It will also reduce the cost of repaying foreign debt, so the government will not have to introduce more spending cuts.
Tell me what American gives UK?
Wow Rachel Reeves that is a dissapointing and shockingly low number. Adding £600 million over 5 years would result in approximately a 0.035% increase in the annual export trade of the United Kingdom. we cant keep running China down and expecting good trade relations.
wake up Britain
1:28 As tarifas no Brasil não são sobre carros eletricos chineses e sim sobre carros eletricos independente da origem.
This tells the difference between tangible and intangible. The bragging is over.
So worried about China when u should be worried about your relationship with the EU 😅
Not about trade, its about vested interests
Tariff put more money into government pocket and take more from the citizens which are consumers, china 🇨🇳 still get same amount of money for their car
It's terrible that the UK is forced to look for money from China. Hopefully this will only be short term, and the UK can just abandon them as soon as.
In a lousy economy such as the current Britain, trading with China makes sense.
respect free trade, not Cold war
I think that for China, Britain is not even as important as South Korea, Australia, Indonesia, Malaysia or Vietnam, not to mention the United States, Japan, Germany and France.
So! UK has a nearly similar trade deficit with the US.
Converting to hydrogen is the future, but the transition has been way too slow.
