I feel like I have so many gaps in my knowledge of sewing (self taught). You really fill in those spaces. You are a pleasure to watch as your pace is perfect as well as your personality.

I have watched many TH-cam videos but yours is as apples of gold in settings of silver.
The simplicity shows that you care about your time as well as your viewers' time.
Middle school home ec left me wondering if I would ever venture into sewing a garment ever again. I took a cooking class in high school but steered clear of sewing.
My mom ended up finishing the garment I made to take to the fair for 4H.
After I married my husband, I borrowed a sewing machine to make Priscilla curtains for our bathtub and I made them from Waverly fabric that had an ivy print. I had about ten yards of fabric to make the ruffle for the valance and the inner seams of the side panels.
Trying to use a ruffler was an epic fail. When I spoke with a longtime friend of mine about running a cord through a pocket and her opinion she had made a 10 yard skirt and had done likewise.
I had no real idea what I was doing after I ran the laundry line through the pocket I had sewn, I ended up sewing part of the cord into the fabric.
My landlady offered to make the buttonholes on the valance which was wonderful as the machine I had borrowed didn't have a buttonholer. (And she had my dream machine!)
A few years later I bought a pattern to make an apron but I couldn't find the pattern that I really wanted. Again, I had no real idea what I was doing but I took the pattern pieces, prayed and mulled over them, came up with an idea and went for it! It really had an impact on a good friend of mine whom I've lost touch with. I wonder if she still has it...
Okay, up to more current...my husband repainted a former Starbucks stool John Deere green. I recovered the seat with some floral outdoor fabric with a ruffle around the edge. It turned out cute.
Taking a few steps back, my parents had given me some money for Christmas one particular year. Part of it went to buying a knockoff Viking sewing machine called Huskystar. That was 2013 and it ran very well until the beginning of the pandemic. Then it froze up solid. It was mostly plastic and definitely needed to go into retirement. But it had served its purpose and quite well at that!
Enter my dream machine 6440 Viking Husqvarna sewing machine in burgundy 💗
Back in the 1980s, these babies were $1000 plus. I was so blessed to get one, albeit vintage, for a fraction of the cost and it was well worth the wait! It came refurbished and I've added more pressure feet, another cam and more bobbins. I even bought a repair manual just in case.
Ok. More up to speed here. I got interested in pattern drafting after buying a bathrobe pattern. I had wanted to make it out of bath towels but ran into numerous challenges which caused more than one manic episode to the point that I had to put it away because it was just too much for me at that point. Not to mention that I missed my mom's 80th birthday party and my first niece's wedding.
Away with that because that's all in the past and God has been very gracious to me in that I've not been manic for over two years!
Okay, tangents are me. I guess I should have given a fair warning. Tut mir leid!
The most recent adventure has been pattern drafting using Helen Joseph Armstrong's 1st and 5th editions plus many TH-cam videos and Google. And I just bought the couture book you recommended.

My mom taught me sewing basics when I was a preteen. I felt nervous and afraid of doing something wrong, perhaps breaking her sewing machine and getting in trouble. Looking back I was probably just making thread knots. I sewed myself a vogue dress in high school which a just loved! It wasn't until I was a poor newlywed with my first daughter that I truly learned to sew. This was in the late 80s before Walmarts were everywhere and cheap clothing was easily accessible. Like you said, it was also a shock to have my body be so different after childbirth.
My mom had given me a bunch of old fabric leftover from when she sewed for my sisters and me in the 70s, along with a few Kwik Sew patterns. I bought one big four pattern that had all pieces in it that was drafted for wovens, which is what my mom had given me. I became very proficient at buttonholes, cuffs and collars! I also had a book called Sew For Baby by Kerstin Martensson that included a sheet of master patterns that I used for my subsequent babies. I recycled my pre-motherhood clothes to make baby clothes. I gleaned and lace and buttons that I could, too. It was so much fun!
Back then we still used regular cameras and film, and I couldn't afford much film, so there are precious few photos to document those times and the clothes I made.
I have loved finding the online setting community in 2018! I am learning so much and am trying sho many new styles and techniques! Again, thank you for being such a sweet and professional resource! 💜
Thank you for sharing that with me. I know a lot of the sewing community now sews for pleasure, but it wasn't always like that. I really hope to share the art of sewing with people who sew for fun and out of necessity (and everything in between).
It sure is fun to be able to document sewing projects so freely now. Your precious film photos of those clothes are special. I love seeing the photos of my mom when she was a child.

Hi Paige, I have always loved the idea of sewing my own clothes but I never have. I can sew basic items like a face mask, pillow case but I have never done clothes. I'm so pleased that I found your tutorials whilst looking for help to mitre a corner. You explain things so well. Thank you, you have inspired me go have a go at a skirt.

I remember my daughter starting to sew in high school. They had to make a simple bag that included a zip, a button and buttonhole, a Pocket and a casing with a drawstring. Such a great idea to learn a few techniques.

Books, TH-cam, patterns and watching the great British sewing bee 🐝 have been my resources throughout my sewing journey. Being not English native I also had the advantage/obstacle learning a second language along the way. In Belgium 🇧🇪 printed patterns are very expensive so buying pdf patterns are pattern books 📚 always give me more value for money.

Hi! I started with quilting! It was my senior project in high school (required for graduation). I continued quilting during breaks from college and after I graduated. A few years later I started to dabble in sewing clothes! I am still a beginner with sewing clothes, but I made a circle skirt using your tutorial and that really boosted my confidence! I am going to pick up a few patterns during a JoAnn sale this weekend and maybe order from Fabric.com!
Picking out patterns is fun! You'll learn a lot from them. On fabric.com make sure to read the details below the pictures. The information will help to make sure you get what you are hoping for. The fabric weight, fiber content, etc.

I started by making a simple quilt. Since then I have made about 8 quilts, not all finished. I’ve made a pillowcase and 3 or 4 pairs of simple shorts from a pattern. When you talked about you first pair of shorts and the fact that learned lots about pant shape, it is so true. They are different from the front and back. I’ve made a couple of zipper pouches from a design I found on TH-cam (before I found yours which I’m dying to try tomorrow). The last thing (I think) was adding a kangaroo pouch (pocket) on the front of an old sweatshirt that I love.it turned out marvelously, if you ask me. The only thing I will add is that I lack confidence making my own cloths. I lack confidence following the patterns and instructions. Thanks for all your wonderful video, you have real style.
This is my second video of yours I have watched. I liked your napkins and now this. I haven't ever made any clothes but have always wanted to. Well this old dog is now inspired. I just ordered your two books from the library and will study those then if it turns out to be something that I want to continue I can buy the books online. Hi, thank you for sharing. I started sewing when my cousin gifted me an older Singer sewing machine and I made my grandmother a quilt. My cousin was a Home Ec. teacher years ago and made clothing for my grandmother as well. She has always been my inspiration to keep learning and sewing wearables and quilts. Mostly I’ve watched TH-cam videos and followed patterns to make blouses and masks lately.
A sewing machine is the gift that keeps on giving. 💕

I learned to sew in 2001 in a class for kids at Joann. We made a pillowcase and a simple elastic waist skirt. I just upgraded to a computerized machine last year after using the same one for nearly 20 years.

Nice to hear a bit more about how you got started sewing and see your projects. : ) I’m mostly self-taught, and I sew little things for friends and my family but, like you, after my kids I’m finding more and more that garments don’t fit. I’m interested in sewing my own clothes.
I'm biased, but you should! It's a lot of fun. It doesn't have to be complicated in the beginning. A gathered skirt only needs to fit around the waist. A simple summer dress with a waist tie is easy to fit. You can do it.

I've been hand sewing little projects and made a singlet top from two fat quarters. Recently bought a cheap sewing machine and hoping to hem some dresses I got from the thrift store recently 🌻
That is a great project to do! My quick tip for hems is ironing. Iron and pin before you sew. 💕

When I started sewing, my first project was a swimsuit. The top was too small but I still have the bottoms. They turned out perfectly. So, I say, anyone can start sewing on whatever project they want. It's totally okay to fail.
Love this! I think a swimsuit is ambitious for a first project, but, as you say, that doesn't mean they won't turn out great.

💕 Thank you! I feel like some level of intuition. Sometimes theme, contrasting or coordinating colors, floral patterns mix well. I just go with what I like verses what I *think* I should do.

For the quilt you made for your second daughter you mention you designed the quilt on the computer. I am curious how you did this. Is there a program you used or anything like that? Thanks in advance for a response. Keep up the great work! You're videos are so thorough and clear to understand!
I used Corel Draw. Made a grid and colored it in. You could sketch it on paper too.

The Pattern Making Primer is by Jo Barnfield and Couture Sewing Techniques is by Claire B. Shaeffer
How do you calculate how much fabric you need?
The pattern charts will tell you. You can find a similar pattern and get just a bit more fabric (1/2 yard) just for safety.
