Like some of the other comments have said, it's because the composer/producer (C418) really knew what he was doing. He wasn't just laying out nice sounding melodies, he was meticulously thinking out everything from start to finish. That's what I love about artist's like him and Deadmau5... They don't just slap some chords down on FL an call it a day.

I discovered this song during my first year of college. I instantly fell in love with it and began listening to it a lot, especially whenever I would drive back to my university after visiting home. After a while, I began assimilating that drive back with the song, and the scenery and sunsets (I usually drove back in the late afternoon) became even more beautiful. Now whenever I hear this song, it brings back memories of that drive and of all my wonderful first year memories. I'd say this is the song that brings the most nostalgia to me.

I went to school here in CSUSB. I would drive back home to visit my family. I would see my friends at the student union, playing Super smash, Yugioh, board games. But when everyone leave, you can see the sunset from the west, I would stare and enjoy it. Walk back to my apartment that I shared with my recent ex, my dog that passed away. This song reminds me of that.

For serious tho: This is a really bad video. If you understand something *less* at the end of a video purporting to explain something then it didn’t actually succeed at explaining anything. Everyone here needs to watch Patricia Taxxon’s video on misteramazing, she explains exactly how every moment of this video is torture if you know anything about art. I’m a musician and watched a couple of videos by this guy before watching her video and found myself going “wtf, that;s not how that works, that’s not how *any* of this works” the whole time. You have 3 chords
One typical chord is made out of 3, the first one being the main note then the 3rd and the 5th note of the chord. Now you add the 7th and 9th to all of these chords and basically just invert them.

I actually get a euphoric experience of nostalgia and sadness that i miss the good old days, but happy i had them whenever i listen to this.

I see myself as a kid again stationed in Germany in the 90's because my Dad was in the army. I was happy, we all were. The sun was perfect, the school holidays were fun with parks and riding donkeys in the woods. Paddling boats and ice cream. Playing Ace Combat 1 with my dad on my Playstation 1, and Crash Bandicoot & Tony Hawk with my older sister. Swimming pool parties with my school friends in my back garden. My mum taking me to the local ice cream parlour and corner shop so i can get some cool Pokemon rub on tattoos from multiple packs of bubble gum.
Finding our first cat who was an abandoned wild kitten in the middle of nowhere behind a grit bin and getting her back home. Watching all my favourite shows on the TV with my family while having dinner together. Dexter's Laboratory, Johnny Bravo, Power Rangers, Pokemon, Digimon.
Hell i even get nostalgia from only 2019 listening to this song when back in April/May me and my girlfriend went on Holiday for the first time together in Japan. The neon lights of Osaka night life, the historic beautiful Kyoto & the peaceful Deer park of Nara.
    Growing up fucking sucks man.

"There are only really 2 chords in the song: Ab and Eb." This guy shouldn't be teaching music. Ironically, when he is telling the viewer what the chords are to the song, he puts the actual sheet music on screen, and the sheet music says exactly what I said above "Fm, Ab, Cm... Fm, Bbm, Ab" - which is also easily figured out by ear. Normally I wouldn't get so riled up about something like this, but the fact that this video has like 2 million + views... is disturbing. @@aspergale9836 Hey there! If I understand your question correctly, you are asking about how to understand the kind of music theory this video is TRYING to convey (although it gives wrong information).
The first suggestion is to simply take music lessons, and make it clear you wish to learn basic music theory.
Second suggestion would be to buy some books on basic music theory from a reputable publisher. I would suggest seeing what Hal Leonard has. There is also a Music Theory For Dummies that some people recommend, but I've not looked at it. I would get about 3 books - I often have found that when I get road blocked on one book, another book will clear something up and make more progress possible.
3rd suggestion: Learn to read music. It's not as hard as people make it out to be - but it does require regular practice (ie, 20 minutes a day, every day). If the person who made this video had been able to read music, he would have seen immediately that his information was wrong - the sheet music had the correct chords. (Still, sheet music can be wrong, and the ultimate test is to check against the recording itself using your ear, which is what I did.)
4th suggestion: Search around on the internet. The information we are talking about consists of understanding basic scales (ie, the major scale), and how harmony (chords) are derived from that scale. This is something I can often teach my students in under an hour - but the difficulty is not in comprehending the information, it is internalizing it in such a way that you can USE IT on your instrument without a great deal of thought (takes a lot of consistent practice). Anyhow, you can find this kind of info on the internet - I would cross reference information on multiple websites. And finally, check out the subreddit for Music Theory, and ask questions there any time you get stuck, or any time you don't know what to look into. Lots of helpful people post there.
Hope that helps. Best of luck.

@@robinsss No, it is an ironic genre of music that remixes the 80s music to satirize nostalgia, capitalism or consumerism. Due to irony, vaporwave is also a bad meme. Synthwave is different from vaporwave in that it replicates the style of the 80s music, but does so for enjoyment.

      2 steps,
step 1: Understand basic 1, 4, 5, 1 progressions mixed with corresponding minors for tension.
step 2: Study jazz cords and modes. Once you understand 9ths, 11ths, and 13ths (even if limited, you don't need to be able to actually live improv off of them like jazz musicians do) and how modes work--
after that, there's a third step
Throw all those rules out the window and combine anything that sounds good with the same philosophy as Debussy.
You can now write absolutely anything.

Just because you aren’t included in that large group of people spanning from 80’s - 00’s doesn’t mean he’s saying you can’t relate.

You focus a lot on the actual theory which is interesting, never thought about it, but there's another element that makes it nostalgic. HOME combines the essence of Vaporwave and Synthwave. Synthwave, comprised mainly of 1980s synthesizers such as the Juno 60 and SH-101, is very nostalgic in of itself because the instruments used are out of a single time period. Vaporwave is obviously nostalgic because the samples are mainly 70s-80s-90s songs, but also because the audio is phased, filtered, and EQed to give it a sound resembling a wobbly tape player echoing in an empty mall. Resonance has a phaser on the white noise track in the beginning as well as a low pass filter on the master track. It also has delay and reverb added to the three main punchy chords, sounding somewhat like a distorted Juno 60. The drum track is simple, like a TR-606. It is a nostalgic wall of sound replicated in every aspect to resemble the synthesizers and audio playback machines of the past.
Thanks for going in depth with the music theory. Really adds another layer to the feeling.

      @ekanastone 7 ปีที่แล้ว +7

Melinda O. no he's correct, he uses the same techniques as vaporwave to create this track. The difference is that this track uses its own samples rather than finding samples. Also it's very important to know, vaporwave has long since gone past using samples.
