I remember people telling me I was a banana, yellow on the outside, white on the inside. But don't worry, your Chinese is MUCH better than mine, and you still managed to survive with elegant solutions!
I completely feel this, and you should be proud of your journey and growth. I was in Hong Kong on my own 20 years ago, and I wish I had a smart phone to at least help. I was consistently told "but you look Chinese..." and felt like I should be able to communicate, but couldn't.
