Lena seems very relaxed and happy in this interview, given after returning from her honeymoon in 1989, although, sadly, the physical effects of her anorexia are all too obvious.
Gone 10 years now Lena. You are remembered not only for your lovely voice but for your fragile and gentle nature. Still in our hearts. R.I.P.
I remember the first time I saw Lena on TV. I was 6 years old and became so enchanted by her voice. My mom bought the LP for me and I have taken care of it so tenderly all these years. Not a scratch it has become, and YES I still have the disc left. The saddest thing is that Lena died on my happiest day of my life, my wedding day on October 1, 1999. Is it fate, faith? In December I will sing her song "End of the world" at the choir concert, I hope Lena smiles from the sky then.
Beautiful young woman who had many demons. I watched the documentary of her life and it was so very sad. Am amazed there hasn't been a film made about her. She was the biggest child star we had in the UK in the 70's and the youngest person to star in the Royal Variety Show. A lovely girl with a remarkable voice. Rest in peace Lena Zavaroni.🌹
This was so tragic. Such a fragile and sensitive girl. I remember reading about her marriage troubles and how she wouldn't eat with her husband and kept on starving. But nothing changes. Lena mentions about society and the pressures on women to look slim - it's just as bad now if not worse.
Caroline. Her mother was the problem. Never stopped nagging her. Poor little Lena. She had anorexia, the only control she could own. Probably all down to her mother.
Husbands are there to support, the problem is, sometimes you don't tell us what's wrong, it's hard to be there if you don't open up to us.
@@armybeef68 absolutely correct. 😊
My daughter in law confides totally in her husband (my son 😍), and he is her rock. He totally loves, supports and cares for her, and she is the same for him.
She deserved someone better. She wouldnt have left him if it was the other way round.
I believe her problems was more down to her agent not her family she was torn away too young and forced into stardom away from a life she had barely come to know. She had to learn how to portray herself and be moulded into what they wanted rather than being herself. Yes she had stardom and fame and travelled but at what a cost. Maybe if her family had been allowed to go with her it may have all turned out different. Luckily nowadays there is more help out there for this terrible illness and is more understood .
I am from the US and she traveled over here when I was just four years old, and made several television appearances. I remember my parents called me over to watch this new young girl sing, and we all loved her. I had forgotten all about her until watching all the videos of her. I'm so sorry to hear she had a life of horrible suffering. She would have been a world-wide diva had she never gotten that horrible affliction.
Lena was such a wonderful, talented singer. She was such a troubled soul who couldn't escape her demons. Her death at such a young age was so very sad. She was such a sweet, gentle lady.
How incredibly sad it is to see her as she was in '89-- looking well and primed for a comeback, newly-married, so full of promise... and to know what tragedy lay ahead for her: the loss of her marriage, her career, her health and ultimately... her life. Simply heartbreaking.
RIP, sweet Lena.
She seemed like such a lovely person.
so sad she died at only 35 .. rip angel
Lovely lady & what a voice. Such a shame her passing. Rest in peace angel.
Yeah I miss her too,a lovely lass sadly missed died to young very sad, great singer.♥️
What a beautiful soft voice when speaking, heartbraking beautiful girl what a singer she was , RIP BEAUTIFUL ANGLE, 💕
Very sad story. Lena was such a kind beautiful soul.
What made her uniqe was that even though she was amazing,Lena never came across has a sulky full of themself diva.Lovelly girl and missed.R'I'P.
her hair is beautiful , bless her x
i once met her....lovely girl great smile & down too earth rip lena
What a gentle humble lady!
I'd been meaning to Google Lena's name for months and today I've done just that...so sad to hear she died in 1999 and from complications of her long standing battle against Anorexia. My 4 siblings and myself didn't have a great deal growing up but one thing we did have was music. Mum had her first album Ma! (He's Making Eyes At Me) and was one of the most popular records us kids would make up performance and dance routines (in costume) to. R.I.P. Lena and thanks so much for making my childhood a happier one. ♥♥♥
+Leanne Goodall I did not know. I remember seeing her on Johnny Carson when she was a little girl. I'm sad to hear she has passed and at such a young age.
Actually she died due to complications of a weird psychiatric lobotomy type operation that the idiot mainstream medical types at the time , decided to inflict upon her. Tragic and what a loss !
A wonderful girl my sister wrote 2 songs for her and said her voice was spectacular
i cant believe he said ".. saves on the restaurant bills" ... aaaggh!
Yes his interview shows the ignorance of the disease at that time. He was appalling.
@@sallyford8284 Frank Bough generally was a very good TV presenter and he was very popular. Then it came out that he was involved in sex, sadism and drug scandals. He lost his job and career. He had a perfect TV voice. He was the sort of chap you would want as a friend. The scandal must have been life shattering for his family.
@@hilaryjohns4049 is he still alive?

Always the way
An amazing talent……such an awful ignorance back then. She seemed so lovely
What a way to introduce her, say she has struggles then call her an old lady at 25. Such a shame that society seems intent on breaking the purest of souls.
That bald and grey old git calling her an old lady!
The most awful thing is that appalling treatment for this dreadful illness is still the norm. Even some of the "professionals" paid to look after sufferers don't understand it.
What an absolute beauty Lena was. God bless this lovely lady. RIP Lena xx
I found this very upsetting, loved Lena, rip angel
Yes very harrowing to watch with hindsight.
Such a shame she was so beautiful her voice was amazing as a child rip Lena Zavaroni
I suffer from Anorexia and the most frustrating thing about it is, all of my friends keep telling me to eat and to stop being daft as i am thin enough. The problem is, i do not feel thin and it stops me from wanting to go out as i feel too overweight, even though i am a UK dress size 6/8. I cannot help it! I eat enough to stay alive. I do miss Sweets, choccy @ cakes, but i dare not go near them, for fear of getting more overweight. I have experienced a lot of horrid things in my life, due to my so called family not wanting me around. I left them as soon as i was legally old enough to do so, but the fact i was unwanted makes me feel like an ugly failure. Keeping my weight thin allows me to feel like i am in control. ...... Thank you for sharing this video with us. Rest in peace, lovely Lena. xxxx
Sorry to hear that you suffer from Anorexia too and that you felt unwanted. I hope you overcome it and if you haven't already, find people who make you feel wanted x
@@mariaobeirne514 Thank you for your kind words of support, my friend. I really appreciate it. xxxxxx
I truly feel your torment. I'm 56 and had anorexia around the same time as Lena did. Currently I'm going through the menopause and have gained weight and people do not understand why it's still an issue for me, after decades of the psychological torment eating disorders bring. I hope you find the inner peace and courage you need. ❤
Than@@annoldham3018 Thank you for your reply and kind words and i wish the same for you and also a Happy new year, my friend. xxx
I wish you self love. Chocolates guilt free. Me and my flab co exist peacefully and happily.
It was rumoured that a record was discussed with Stock/Aiken/Waterman for Lena around this time, it wouldn,t surprise me if Sonia's album was originally planned for Lena.....
This was 1989, long before the enlightenment we have today. I loved Lena and I always will. An incredible talent. As others have said, God bless you Lena. The World was too cruel a place for you, I hope you are happy and at peace.
Lena was beautiful and very talented. Depression is a horrible illness and sadly it's for life with some of us.
Won't ever forget her and how much she went through in her short tragic life.💔💔
Glad to hear that you think we are enlightened!
This interview was aired 10 years before she died, and this was her only interview on British TV back in 1989.
Not eating in a restaurant Saves on the restaurant Bills , what an ignorant comment by the interviewer. Lovely lady such a shame. r.i.p.
Shame she was someone I remember from my child hood ,this is why more steps should be taken when managing children in films and singing
Difficult to understand. She was so pretty, so charming, so talented, but clearly something was missing for her. She was born the same year as me. Such a shame.
Totally. Just like Karen Carpenter, to us they have it all...
She was taken from her family at 10 years of age ... Thats bound to leave a lasting impact.
She was so beautiful and talented ❤
Amazing singer still much missed xxx
Very brave of her to talk about it xx
Anorexia "Saves on the restaurant bills" Wow, Frank Bough really was an insensitive, cretinous, misogynist buffoon.
Lena in contrast was an intelligent, sensitive, sweet and talented human being, with the courage and grace to speak publicly about a psychological illness so severe it would indirectly take her life at just 35.
There are obvious parallels with Karen Carpenter's tragedy, but this interview reminds me of one in particular. Both women married unimpressive, nonentity men, who could not love them unconditionally, or support them to a brighter future. God bless you Lena, you deserved so much more than this world delivered. But despite you tragic, premature end, you have left the world a beautiful and enduring legacy of good.
Hilarious questions.
The interviewer is perfect.
@@marklentine8793 You said nothing about Frank Bough, everything about yourself.
just been listening to Lena she was such a lovely sweet girl.elizabeth
For some reason I’ve always remembered this girl’s international fame as a one-hit wonder. I read an interview she did at the time in “Rolling Stone” in which she said something about looking forward to being grown up and being able to wear platform shoes, which were stylish then. I didn’t even remember her name, and am now reading for the first time that - as I feared back in the early 1970s - she had a sad and short life.
Neither of them were offended by Frank Bough's rather crass comment. The fact is people didn't "take offence" in those days the way they do today, hard as that might be for a lot of people today to understand.
They weren’t ‘woke’ and all the better for it. More grace.
I totally agree 👍🏾
I am in my 60s now and our young years were far happier than what young people have now.
@@gaycha6589 I agree.
Speak for yourself!
They may have acted like they didn’t care but a lot of people hid their hurt when people make crass offensive comments.
Very sad she had a fantastic voice.
Dynamic voice .!! RIP
Lina was magic, wonderful voice and lovely person, we have lost a special person, RIP Lena xxxx
i loved her too
shes the reason i became a singer
It just teaches us to be more understanding and kind to folk who have sad times difficult issues to cope with hopefully ive learnt
So talented...hate she's gone
Frank wasn’t listening to a word she said.
God Bless you Lena. You seemed like a lovely girl with a good singing voice and a good entertainer. Quite pretty really x
I love lena zavaroni bless her RIP SWEETHEART MISS YOU
It's so easy to fall in love with her. R.I.P Lena xx
Her husband seemed uninterested in her and dippy...she was wonderful
It was shocking what happened to her.
This conversation could be today 2021 - things don’t really change, she had a super voice and was super talented , really sad to see her 🌸😥
She was a great talent sadly missed
Let's not be too harsh on Frank! Yea, with hindsight, the joke does seem insensitive, but this was 20 years ago and at a time when Lena was apparently recovered and getting her career restarted. Her poor health and showbiz demise was not the easiest subject and I think Frank handled it ok. If you listen, he frequently compliments Lena and shows her compassion. I think he just wanted to help Lena with an upbeat interview.
Such a beautiful and gifted person. I'm just so glad she found some happiness in her life. so so sad it wasn't for long, How She must have suffered, and such an angel. well missed and well loved. perhaps one day, we will meet in a much better place than here.Todays world is so sick, the media and people put so much pressure on us to look a certain way, few of us can attain. What really matters is a good heart, but it never seems enough. rest in piece angel. You will always be special in my heart.
Saves on the restaurant bills I think he meant no malice he meant that when she eats at home it would be cheaper.
Saves on restaurant bills .. what a prat. Such a loss of a lovely talented lady.
out of context have you taken the response of the interviewer to Lena's initial response. I guess you are out of context too.
I bet she got tucked into the food
I had anorexia around the same time. Had to endure many inappropriate comments such as these. However, little was known about the illness at the time. And I am sure nothing bad was intended.
I thought the same. How different things were back then. I feel she would of beaten it had this happened now
farfisa okay yoda
Loved her hair here! she just looked lovely! so sad...
Hugie Green made my skin crawl when lena appeared on his show. The way he behaved towards her was creepy and unsettling to see, it makes me wonder why lena ended up the way she did... Maybe she had reasons to be messed up? Extremely disturbing ones.
What a crass thing to say by Frank Bough about saving on the restaurant bill when Lena mentioned about being self conscious eating in front of people , wasn't the best of interviews imo.
Her hair is bigger than her head. Poor soul.
She was a beautiful woman.
I think things could have ended up differently if she was treated better as a child, and she was given what she deserved.
She was a great singer.
He said she's an old lady now...25???? Geeeeze that guy is part of the pressure she was referring to..I just found her tonite on youtube...she was AMAZING
Suzie Paris I know right....wtf...25.
I think with the largest proportion of western society occupying the older category, we’ve become less ageist.
Suzie Paris
Frank Bough was an idiotic coke head!
Dreadful man !
Anorexia is a real disease that alot don't understand. It is a complex and difficult battle and only those who have had it will understand it. Poor girl her confidence must have been at an all time low. I loathe the pressure that is put on women to be slim. As for that man interviewing her I have no words except masoginistic and ignorant😢😮
God bless you Lena!! namasti!
She was a beautiful soul. Talented too. Shame what happened.
She could have been a Streisand or Garland and would be filling theatres today. rip.
Unbelievably insensitive Frank Bough... could be...Alan Partridge.
I never knew she passed! Now and then I hear her little singing Mama! She was such natural talent. Her husband ? I wonder how he coped after her passing! Peter Wiltshire? Hope he did not just wilt away in despair Oh well, rest in peace, beautiful and talented child. One wonders what direction her life would have taken ,if opportunity did not knock for her. Good Question, but we won't ever know. One cannot help admiring and loving that which appears beautiful.
" A thing of beauty is a " joy" forever? Therefore a person of beauty must be the equivalent or more!
Yes, she was singing ,all I need is the air that I breathe to love you! The dear child did not realise the value of food! She suffered with Anorexia Nervosa like our lady of Mercy LDS!
My first case study when I commenced my Psychiatric Nurses Training was a young girl with AN, this condition. She was a walking skeleton, well she could not walk. Whenever I was on shift, she was all mine. I had to make sure she had all the attention she needed. I really was seriously caring. She did begin to eat and put on weight, then they took her away. I let her go, so I can't even recall her name. My manager a Sister Deadman appeared to be very impressed by my interaction with this girl and her eating disorder. It seemed that once someone bonded with her even in a Nurse friendly way, she began eating and the antics and behaviour about food was dropped.
Lena expressed in her interview what I see and experience, it's not just about food it the emotional baggage that one lives with, collect and carry in their psyche.
Just had to find her and saying something as she keeps coming into my sphere of thought .
Rest in peace little Lena, you are beautiful, talented and you have a place in the archives of history.
Love ❣️ you ,my daughter.
Mamma Jean
Sad about Lena so sweet RIP dear Lena
In response to Lena's comment about finding it difficult to eat in public, Bough responds by saying '...saves on the restaurant bills, doesn't it?' How unbelievably patronising and insensitive!!
GOD BLESS YOU X
Gone but not forgotten r.i.p.
sings in heaven now
she has great hair in this video. i love that style :D
What a simply stunning woman.
lena was so lovely and sweet. So sad she's not still with us.
Frank Bough's positive slant on anorexia... 'Bet it saves on restaurant bills'!
sorry to lose you Lena so sorry.
poor wee soul : (
Beautiful woman, hugely talented. Much missed. On the other hand what an ignorant interviewer 'saves on restaurant bills'. What a disgusting human being he turned out to be. 😢
I know we didn't know as much about anorexia then as we do today but you would have thought they'd have done some research on her illness before they let Frank Bough loose on her, after all it is crucially important. Poor Lena, with him making a joke about saving money on restaraunt bills, oh dear. I wonder if her regrets his words?
Lena passed. away at 35
+ Yes, I know that. Complications due to her eating disorder proved fatal. I have lost several good friends that way--some as young as 15, so in that respect, at least Lena got to reach adulthood. Personally, I have suffered with extreme eating disorders for years. I just got healthy again, but have had relapses (Somebody told me that "once an anorexic, always an anorexic) But I digress. If I can find that article about how she was mistreated and had undergone several surgeries before her demise, I will post it here. I'm not trolling or making this up to start trouble. I read voraciously and came upon the information not too long ago. So I don't know how to respond to your comment. Or why did you just give me a short sentence to someone who knows this already? Your comment gets a fail. I'm done with this, no offence.
I watched her on opportunity. Knocks' her life was so sad.
She seemed to be an absolutely lovely lady.
She dies when I was born... She is so wonderful!
Very sad to watch this. So many hopes, but sadly Lena is all to obviously still very unwell.
I got her autograph in Largs when I was a wee snot-faced boy about 7 or 8 years old.
Heartbreaking tale.
I understand, I was so obsessed about Lena yesterday.
Hermosos temas musicales de Lena Savaroni ...La verdad
Cannot believe the interviewer made a joke about anorexia!!
Poor Lena, she lost her childhood and was let down by greedy adults, manipulating her talent for money… these interviews show just how fragile she was.
I hope she has her peace now.
she was, and always will be Lena Zavaroni. Frank Bough can be found on another website..she did well. x
Horrible times. Horrible questions. Shame shame shit.
What a talented fun kid.
She would be divorced 18 months later.
It is sad that things did not work out for them both.
Very interesting interview. Frank Bough handled it well, and the husband seems a nice feller.
Someone should have helped this woman and people should have took more notice of her problem with her Anorexia and it seemed not enough people fully cared about her even her agent Dorothy it seems she just kind of shrugged everything off and then maybe she could have been helped if only people had even tried harder I feel and from what I’ve heard when did Peter even notice her problem so did he ever know about her Anorexia. So many people I feel could have enquired and tried to help her. Someone should have helped her more I know that Peggy Claude Pierre tried and did help feel okay I think but other people should have more.
she did get help.
she had a long break from showbiz then came back.
she is lovely!!
