2 great alternative airports are the Long Beach and Burbank locations. Ontario and John Wayne (Orange County) airports are farther out from L.A but also good alternatives. One general tip (I think in most airports) is when departing LAX, frequent flyers know to get dropped off at the arrivals (lower platform) and then take a staircase or elevator ip to the departures. That roundabout at departures is a slow nightmare to navigate!
I used to live 2 miles from John Wayne and I drove up to Long Beach to take JetBlue whenever I flew to Vegas. It was a more enjoyable and cheaper experience.
@ bill green You're right, John Wayne and Ontario airports also offer multiple freeway/highway options making for easier commutes, and on top of that, like you said, cheaper more economical alternative.
I live closer to BUR, but often end up flying through LAX because it's cheaper and I can get a direct flight. If you're going to have a layover anyway, definitely look into BUR, LGB, ONT, and SNA.
Hell on earth. LAX has been my home international airport for 50 years. (I use Ontario, etc. for domestic.) LAX has been "improving" since they built it. Construction is always happening with promises that it will be better plastered all over the place. The new Tom Bradley is better, but they will be tearing it up eventually to "improve" it. I stopped driving myself there 30 years ago. You need a ruthless cabbie who can negotiate the traffic jam at unloading. Hell on earth.

Eventually, you should be able to walk from T1 to T8 without needing to reclear security. The T1-T2 connection is being done right now, and when T3 reopens, it should include connections to T2. From my last times in LAX this month, it looks like the T3-TBIT connector hasn't started yet, but that is in the works. TBIT through T8 is already connected. Of course, once it's done, if you're going from T1-T8 it might still be faster to walk across the horseshoe and re-clear TSA than go allllll the way around LAX.
