Shoebills Sound Like Machine Guns

  • This prehistoric bird looks like it wants to murder you in your sleep. That's probably why its gaze is affectionately nicknamed the "death stare. Known as a shoebill, this bizarre bird found meme fame because of its bone-chilling stare. Even Joe Rogan gave the shoebill a social media shoutout. But this bird has other captivating attributes. How big do they get? Why do they make such jarring machine-gun sounds? And if a shoebill gives you the death stare, should you be scared?

    • @abdolpix4581
      @abdolpix4581 10 หลายเดือนก่อน +8

      Your 5th grade teacher wanted to teach evolution to you by simplifying its mechanism to the point of inaccuracy.
      Shoebills do not descend directly from T-rex, if that's what your teacher meant. That's not how evolution works. All birds, including shoebills, descend from T-rexes' unknown cousins, whom they share with the former a "last common ancestor".
      The last common ancestor(LCA) of birds is the most recent *individual* from which all the birds are descended. We don't know who that invidual was, but we can guess how it looked like by comparing it with its closest known relative (like Archaeopteryx). So, that doesn't mean Archaeopteryx (or T-rex for that matter) is the ancestor of birds. It means that Archaeopteryx is the animal which is closest to the unknown invidual which is the ancestor of all birds. T-rexes share another LCA with the birds' LCA. That means birds' LCA is t-tex's cousin and a descendant of t-rex and birds' LCA.
      I hope you understand now.

    Although they’re living dinosaurs like the cassowary, they are polar opposites when it comes to safety. Even though the shoebill’s stare may make people think it’s out for blood, human blood, they’re rarely defensive and as far as I’ve ever seen never aggressive towards people. Cassowary, however, have a serious body count. Due to their razor claws, if they feel threatened or are just doing what birds do and get aggressive during mating time, they can seriously injure and even kill a human quickly and easily.
    I love shoebills. I would have loved them even if people didn’t say they’re ugly or scary, but the fact that people are so mean to them means they’re cemented in my heart forever 💙💚

    Happy to hear that they aren't usually aggressive - the same can't be said for their pelican cousins. To be fair, even ducks will go after you if they feel threatened but larger birds are much more intimidating. Dogs clearly know better than to mix it with swans, geese and the like.

    • @LoneWolf-zh1iy
      @LoneWolf-zh1iy 4 วันที่ผ่านมา

      @@Vik1919 But it is "philosophical", as Science is based on observation. Now I don't know about you, but I know for a fact, there weren't any scientists around to observe such creatures way back when. Fossils or no fossils, they don't have a tag on them saying how old they are, that comes down to the charlatans, who make up a number to suit their own scientific ends.
