    Dionne’s talent broke down barriers just by being on TV !

    She did things with her voice that Aretha couldn’t do …. She’s One the the greatest American singers period

      Aretha was an R&B singer. She never received any formal vocal coaching or musical training. She had more hits but she was never a vocally adventurous entertainer. Dionne was a music major in college. She studied piano and voice to expert level, and it's while she was doing this that she met Hal and Burt. By then she already had a lot of formal education and training in music that went well beyond just R&B culture which is where most black musicians were in at the time. Because of her training, sDionne could do (and did do) amazing things vocally that most other performers then (and now) couldn't match. It also helped that she was blessed enough to team up with two of the best songwriters ever, and she began her career more as a pop star than an R&B singer. She has done it all...pop, jazz, R&B, gospel, Broadway...she even covered Top 20 rock hits live when she hosted the Solid Gold TV show.

      Exactly, Aretha is an amazing singer but she is limited. She’s not versatile like Dionne or Whitney

    • @Justaskkjames
      @Justaskkjames 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      60's and 70's Aretha sat Dionne vocally. This is why Dionne NEVER made it to anyone's greatest vocalist list. Aretha ALWAYS sits comfortably at number one. Aretha was the most diverse singer in history. Her success is beyond r&b. Gospel, pop, soul...all genres where she dominated.

    • @scotttaylor6184

      @@Justaskkjames Dionne had more hits than Aretha. Aretha didn’t start big hits until 1967. Warwick started making hits in 1964. They are both incomparable vocalist very different , both icons and both very very successful.

    Besides Warwick's distinctive voice, I love this version for the arrangement; the way they interpolated the theme from "Cool" into the background. Clever and effective. It's like an early version of a mashup. :-)

      @@enid9911 It's from West Side Story, the same film as Somewhere. Whoever arranged the orchestration for Somewhere in this video, just interpolated the riff from Cool into it. Here's a link to a clip from the film:

      Yes... that intro is undoubtedly influenced/or a homage to the score in the classic 1960 movie "Breathless" with Jean-Paul Belmondo and Jean Seberg... a very early 60s vibe...

    • @Dreadtower
      @Dreadtower 7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      The riff is a recurring motif in West Side Story from which, as you know, the song is taken. Interesting that it works over the verse of the song, if rather tensely.

    She does this on her live album "Decade of Gold" as well as the "Windows of the World" album and I always liked this finger snapping arrangement. I put it right up there with Diana Ross & The Supremes' classic version (from "T.C.B." and "At the Copa") and Roberta Flack's ultra mellow version (from the "Newport Jazz Festival" and "Double Dynamite" Concert with Donny Hathaway), but I would be amiss if I did not mention Dionne also sings this in perfect harmony with Gladys Knight and Patti LaBelle, though it with the traditional arrangement. There is also a post on TH-cam with Carole Alston doing the Dionne Warwick version that is pretty faithful to this arrangement.

    Not sure why opening credit says, "Dionne Warwick - Live In Concert 2005 Tour (Full)". Must be late 1960s.

  • @joegiersher507
    @joegiersher507 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Near the beginning and at the end of the video it says 'live in concert 2005 tour'.
    Why? This performance was obviously from around 1966 or 1967, which is when the song was released.

  • @cleopatrajones2024
    @cleopatrajones2024 4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    I love her but I never understood why she didnt open up more in her upper register. It always felt as if she was holding back instead of letting it out. It always sounded strained. Nancy Wilson never really opened up either. It's like they are singing their upper registers from their throats like they are afraid to open that diaphragm up and let her RIP.

      Her voice wasnt as powerful yet as it was in the early 80’s but here it was delicate and still maturing she was only 25. Her range then was exceptionally high tho she could fly into the stratosphere with some
      Of the best sopranos of the age
