Here is my very late take on how Pikachu lost against Snivy the first battle. What I think it is is how levels don't really matter in the anime. They exist sure, but they may not apply because obviously Pokemon learn moves that they wouldn't in game, like Pikachu learning Electro Web. The level could still be 5-61, but it probably wouldn't matter because in the end, Pikachu is a Pikachu. A weak statted Pokemon that has a base stat total of 320. Snivy's base stat total is 308. plus quick attack isnt stab, and stab DOES apply to the anime. I don't know for sure if low roles and high roles are in the anime, but if they are, quick attack would not do as much as killing Snivy in 3 different lives. And then to account for the possible high roles and crits for Snivy's tackle (I think its tackle) and stab Leaf Tornado, if I correctly put in the numbers, that would be just barely be enough to defeat Pikachu. Or it could just be a sympathy faint and Pikachu's acting has improved heavily

That was an interesting video! I'm sorry you had to grind your way through all those episodes. I can barely get past the collective stupidity of Ash and friends in the advanced battle series. Your pain is real. With the Snivy battle, I'm still calling shenanigans! Pikachu couldn't use his electric attacks and had only iron tail and quick attack. Snivy had leaf tornado, a move that can not be an egg move (unlike leaf storm) and can only be learned at level 16. And I know this because snivy happens to be my favorite pokemon, so I've bred a few to gain egg moves and almost always use ones in my black and white playthroughs. I'm not a math person, though, so I'm not sure if a weakened, low 60's or 59 level pikachu with only two none STAB moves could still match up against a strong level 16 snivy. I mean, it sounds like he definitely could with his attack stats, though pikachu are not (in my experience, anyways) very defensive. They're kinda brittle, actually. Snivy can take more hits (than a pikachu, at least) because they're more on the defensive scale (adding leech seed, coil and an eviolite can greatly help with the defense, too. I can proudly say that my IV trained snivy, with those moves and item, in an online battle, took a spacial rend from a palkia, defeated it, then took a jugdement from an arceus and defeated it, too.) ....Not sure if that adds anything. I'm just a huge nerd. XD
Another thing to consider is Zekrom sapping all of pikachu's electricity, we dont know what effects that could have regardless of level so all base stats could be degraded to a lower temporary stat. So therefore Snivy could take a Quick Attack and Iron tail and have low df and hp which is why he loses to snivy.
My headcanon is that Ash's Pikachu is a partner Pikachu and he got a permanent light ball boost by Brock's Father ar pewter city, By that logic Pikachu's Stats are as follows HP -45 Attack -80(160 from light ball boost) Defense -50 Sp. Atk -75 (150 from light ball boost) Sp. Def -60 Speed -120 Total 585
Maybe what makes Pikachu special is that he has maxed IVs and has a mutation making his base stat value higher then most pokemon, including legendaries. Which would explain how it can roll so many higher level pokemon. It would also explain why Jesse and James would be so persistent about stealing it. They weren't interested in Pikachu's current level, but his potential for growth. Which, low key, would make them pretty dang perceptive compared to everyone else in the show who just shrug this off. As for the Snivy fight... Maybe Pikachu wasn't feeling all that well due to... I don't know... Food poisoning? Maybe it was putting on a tough act to hide it because whatever would be weakening him was embarrassing to him? That's the only concievable reason I could think of for Snivey winning.
that'd make the most sense seeing as from "let's go Pikachu" and any reference of getting a Pikachu from it automatically has max IVs. Your Pikachu from that is already max IV'd as is the Pikachu you get from Sword + Shield for playing the former. :O

@@aryaleef8899 Volt Tackle. In gen three (which is when Ash’s Pikachu gets it), it’s only obtainable by breeding a Pikachu with another Pikachu with one of them holding a Light Ball. The resulting Pichu will know the move. In other words, he should have been born with the move or never know it at all. That said, in gen eight it’s possible to put egg moves onto parents so that’s not longer an issue. Doesn’t change the fact that Pikachu shouldn’t know Volt Tackle though.

Great theory and kudos on all the work put in, but sadly i'll have to disagree with you on the conclusion I ran the numbers. A level 5 snivy can defiantly beat a level 59 Pikachu Normaly a crit leaf tornado from the strongest level 5 snivy (31 iv, 252 ev and beneficial nature) will do at best 8.1% damage to the weakest Pikachu (0 iv, 0 ev, bad nature ). Pikachu's quick attack will also do at the very least 279.1% of snivy health. which checks out with your math. BUT! there are 2-5 more factors you haven't calced in. first, status conditions. if pika was burned, he would do 1/2 the dmg so 'only' 137.1%. obviously we have no reason to believe he was burned so lets ignore that. second, held items. A lucky Salac berry could have given Snivy +2 special attack (or X2 dmg) boosting him to 13.6%. honestly, we also don't have a reason to believe Snivy held salac berry so no shot. (alternately choice specs would give +50% damage but snivy also used tackle so.... meadow plate i guess (+20%) ) Third, reflect. if Snivy had somehow set up a reflect, he would take 1/2 the damage from QA which is again 137%. Alas, we again have no reson to belive reflect was up so this too is off the table Fourth, abilities. Snivy's default ability is Overgrow, which boost grass moves by 33% when at
For snivy to survive it need to have a focus slash and uses the move endeavor for its first move and after pickachu will have 1 hp and for its second attack just use quick attack and that should KO pickachu.
i started watching pokemon black and white ad found out this about pikachu vs snivy battle: pikachu ost his ability to use electric type moves, meaning ash kept wasting turns. and on snivy's turn, snivy just used a basic move, but since pikachu couldn't really attack, pikachu fainted. the above was concluded by me and my turtle.
The theory is that Ash took a break from Pokémon after the Sinnoh region, but we don't know how long it was. They originally went to Unova as a vacation, and Ash saw all of the new Pokémon, and wanted to start his journey back up again. But seeing as he forgets everything, it was probably a pretty long break in-between the Sinnoh and Unova regions, and you can see this because he loses the league to someone who brought 5 Pokémon to a 6 Pokémon battle (BRUH). After the Unova region, Ash got his confidence back, and he went to a new region, the Kalos region. You can see because the only thing that he cares about is winning, and throughout the region, he relearns that the existence of Pokémon isn't just to battle one another, and you can see this after "Ash-Greninja" loses against Alans Mega Charizard X in the Kalos league finals, and isn't that mad or sad, like he was when his Charizard didn't battle in the 5th round of the Indigo League, back in Kanto. And in the Alola region, he doesn't rush into another league like he did in Kalos, and he kind of took a break from the leaugues, until the next region, in Galar.
So… is MatPat going to tell the truth that Pikachu was injured by a legendary before the battle? Like, the episode had Pikachu weakened by a dark cloud that was actually Zekrom, and therefore Pikachu was weaker than usual for the battle? Like, in the episode they explain it right after the battle, so it proves it wasn’t ever a fair fight? And even if you want to say “oh, it’s just lower HP,” the episode says how Pikachu’s ability to use electric moves was negated. Who’s to say physical power wasn’t somewhat affected, too?
While this doesn't affect the overall results of the Snivy fight, Pikachu could still be a higher level than 60-ish, since there could always be fights not shown on-screen

It always bothers me when people say “Pikachu was beaten by a level 5 Snivy.” Snivy doesn’t learn Leaf Tornado until level 16 in Gen 5, meaning that Pikachu was actually beaten by a Level 16 Snivy. It’s still pathetic but it’s not AS bad as a level 61 losing to a level 5.
Maybe he accidently hacked Pikachu's stats too high and they had an integer overflow. When he fought Snivy his stat's were so high that they reset back to 0.

It would make sense for pikachu to throw the match as this trainer was just starting out on their journey so pikachu threw the match trying to not crush the trainers dreams right out the gate. I got the answer thanks your calculations Mat. What you neglect to calculate is that Snivy is actually level 16 because it cannot learn Leaf Tornado at level 5. Meaning Ash's level 59 Pikachu was battling a level 16 Snivy. And here's the direct damage calculations: Lvl 59 0 Atk Pikachu Quick Attack vs. Lvl 16 0 HP / 252 Def Snivy: 41-49 (91.1 - 108.8%) -- 56.3% chance to OHKO This means that Snivy will not be guaranteed okoed by a neutral nature pikachu using quick attack. As for the return hit Snivy does very low damage back. Lvl 16 0- Atk Snivy Tackle vs. Lvl 59 0 HP / 0 Def Pikachu: 2-3 (1.5 - 2.3%) Lvl 16 252+ SpA Snivy Leaf Tornado vs. Lvl 59 0 HP / 0- SpD Pikachu: 7-10 (5.4 - 7.8%) Which shows that the maximum damage Snivy could do was 10% back. However Ash's pikachu had been injured and could have not fully recovered, or rather not recovered at all from the encounter with Zekrom. Thus it is entirely possible that Pikachu just has 10% of it's hp or 20% if both of Snivy's attacks were crits and so he was defeated. Now it makes perfect sense. Not only is it possible that Pikachu went into the fight with low HP, but also it's perfectly possible that the anime 'verse works with a slightly more realistic logic in terms of health, namely that Pikachu could have simply had a serious off day with an unusually competent Snivy.
I would follow this logic with if it was an off day and Pikachu knows he is way stronger then it's very probable that Pikachu held back and threw the fight because we have seen pike be very compassionate as counter to ashs competitive nature so I am gonna say pika simply threw the fight because it didn't wana actually hurt a baby compared to it. Like I used to go to pokemon card game tournaments and even took first place a few times but when I play against my 9 year old I hold super back and don't use any actual strategy. So she can learn and build confidence in desicion making. Pokemon constantly display that level intellect and compassion.
You're slightly correct about following real world logic just miss 2 points 1 that snivy knew leaf storm there is no way for a normal snivy to knew that 2 it has been explained multiple times that if the trainer got confused than so does the pokemon they were completely shocked why Pikachu is unable to use any electric attack and was not focused in battle
My head-canon was always that Ash was training Pikachu between battles. I don't think that Pikachu is lvl 100, but I think it's unlikely that his level is quite that low. The calculations do prove the minimum level it could be, though.
Theory: it never says that pikachu is at full health when they start fighting, so maybe Ash simply forgot to have him healed up and he was sitting at "low" hp...
Yeah, if you think about it, even in the first season, how many battles did pikachu actually have between gyms? Compare that to how many times you get popped in the game going between gyms from trainers and wild pokemon. And you only get experience when you win lol. Ash was getting badges after losing.
nah the last game I played, Y, I never used the rare candies. I was saving them for the later levels where the amount of exp needed is crazy. You can easily get to levels around 60 by just beating the game with normal grinding.
After re-watching this one year later I think I’ve realized that Matt didn’t put in perspective the power boost that Pikachu gets throughout the series as well an example of this would be when Brock’s father uses the electric water generator to power a Pikachu that had to of accounted for some extra levels
I mean those extra levels aren't able to be put numerically so i doubt they can be held accountable as a form of bonus levels which already was an overkill on snivy

Here is my very late take on how Pikachu lost against Snivy the first battle. What I think it is is how levels don't really matter in the anime. They exist sure, but they may not apply because obviously Pokemon learn moves that they wouldn't in game, like Pikachu learning Electro Web. The level could still be 5-61, but it probably wouldn't matter because in the end, Pikachu is a Pikachu. A weak statted Pokemon that has a base stat total of 320. Snivy's base stat total is 308. plus quick attack isnt stab, and stab DOES apply to the anime. I don't know for sure if low roles and high roles are in the anime, but if they are, quick attack would not do as much as killing Snivy in 3 different lives. And then to account for the possible high roles and crits for Snivy's tackle (I think its tackle) and stab Leaf Tornado, if I correctly put in the numbers, that would be just barely be enough to defeat Pikachu. Or it could just be a sympathy faint and Pikachu's acting has improved heavily

Why is nobody commenting on the Prager U levels of dishonesty on the charts displayed @ 4:30 when he says that? I mean, maybe the 46% is supposed to be the smaller red section, but why does he write it on the larger 54% green section? Then there's something on the right that can only be described as a representation of a graph... I would be very surprised if this was not a jab at Prager U's intentionally misleading graphs and charts. I mean, it's obviously a joke-- he practically announces that... but I would like to know if that's what they were going for. Because it's either that, or they were just going for just dishonesty in general, and dishonesty just happens to look like Prager U. 'Cuz I'd believe either at this point.

That was an interesting video! I'm sorry you had to grind your way through all those episodes. I can barely get past the collective stupidity of Ash and friends in the advanced battle series. Your pain is real.
With the Snivy battle, I'm still calling shenanigans! Pikachu couldn't use his electric attacks and had only iron tail and quick attack. Snivy had leaf tornado, a move that can not be an egg move (unlike leaf storm) and can only be learned at level 16. And I know this because snivy happens to be my favorite pokemon, so I've bred a few to gain egg moves and almost always use ones in my black and white playthroughs.
I'm not a math person, though, so I'm not sure if a weakened, low 60's or 59 level pikachu with only two none STAB moves could still match up against a strong level 16 snivy. I mean, it sounds like he definitely could with his attack stats, though pikachu are not (in my experience, anyways) very defensive. They're kinda brittle, actually. Snivy can take more hits (than a pikachu, at least) because they're more on the defensive scale (adding leech seed, coil and an eviolite can greatly help with the defense, too. I can proudly say that my IV trained snivy, with those moves and item, in an online battle, took a spacial rend from a palkia, defeated it, then took a jugdement from an arceus and defeated it, too.) ....Not sure if that adds anything. I'm just a huge nerd. XD
Another thing to consider is Zekrom sapping all of pikachu's electricity, we dont know what effects that could have regardless of level so all base stats could be degraded to a lower temporary stat. So therefore Snivy could take a Quick Attack and Iron tail and have low df and hp which is why he loses to snivy.
What if he has PokeRus? Wouldn't that also explain why he's unusual compared to other Pikachu, and thus why Team Rocket is after him in particular?

Maybe what makes Pikachu special is that he has maxed IVs and has a mutation making his base stat value higher then most pokemon, including legendaries. Which would explain how it can roll so many higher level pokemon. It would also explain why Jesse and James would be so persistent about stealing it. They weren't interested in Pikachu's current level, but his potential for growth. Which, low key, would make them pretty dang perceptive compared to everyone else in the show who just shrug this off.
As for the Snivy fight... Maybe Pikachu wasn't feeling all that well due to... I don't know... Food poisoning? Maybe it was putting on a tough act to hide it because whatever would be weakening him was embarrassing to him? That's the only concievable reason I could think of for Snivey winning.
that'd make the most sense seeing as from "let's go Pikachu" and any reference of getting a Pikachu from it automatically has max IVs. Your Pikachu from that is already max IV'd as is the Pikachu you get from Sword + Shield for playing the former. :O

@@aryaleef8899 Volt Tackle. In gen three (which is when Ash’s Pikachu gets it), it’s only obtainable by breeding a Pikachu with another Pikachu with one of them holding a Light Ball. The resulting Pichu will know the move. In other words, he should have been born with the move or never know it at all.
That said, in gen eight it’s possible to put egg moves onto parents so that’s not longer an issue. Doesn’t change the fact that Pikachu shouldn’t know Volt Tackle though.

I ran the numbers. A level 5 snivy can defiantly beat a level 59 Pikachu
Normaly a crit leaf tornado from the strongest level 5 snivy (31 iv, 252 ev and beneficial nature) will do at best 8.1% damage to the weakest Pikachu (0 iv, 0 ev, bad nature ). Pikachu's quick attack will also do at the very least 279.1% of snivy health. which checks out with your math.
BUT! there are 2-5 more factors you haven't calced in.
first, status conditions. if pika was burned, he would do 1/2 the dmg so 'only' 137.1%. obviously we have no reason to believe he was burned so lets ignore that.
second, held items. A lucky Salac berry could have given Snivy +2 special attack (or X2 dmg) boosting him to 13.6%. honestly, we also don't have a reason to believe Snivy held salac berry so no shot. (alternately choice specs would give +50% damage but snivy also used tackle so.... meadow plate i guess (+20%) )
Third, reflect. if Snivy had somehow set up a reflect, he would take 1/2 the damage from QA which is again 137%. Alas, we again have no reson to belive reflect was up so this too is off the table
Fourth, abilities. Snivy's default ability is Overgrow, which boost grass moves by 33% when at
For snivy to survive it need to have a focus slash and uses the move endeavor for its first move and after pickachu will have 1 hp and for its second attack just use quick attack and that should KO pickachu.

The theory is that Ash took a break from Pokémon after the Sinnoh region, but we don't know how long it was. They originally went to Unova as a vacation, and Ash saw all of the new Pokémon, and wanted to start his journey back up again. But seeing as he forgets everything, it was probably a pretty long break in-between the Sinnoh and Unova regions, and you can see this because he loses the league to someone who brought 5 Pokémon to a 6 Pokémon battle (BRUH). After the Unova region, Ash got his confidence back, and he went to a new region, the Kalos region. You can see because the only thing that he cares about is winning, and throughout the region, he relearns that the existence of Pokémon isn't just to battle one another, and you can see this after "Ash-Greninja" loses against Alans Mega Charizard X in the Kalos league finals, and isn't that mad or sad, like he was when his Charizard didn't battle in the 5th round of the Indigo League, back in Kanto. And in the Alola region, he doesn't rush into another league like he did in Kalos, and he kind of took a break from the leaugues, until the next region, in Galar.
Personally, I’m still waiting for that “How Shadow Get Guns??” episode.

While this doesn't affect the overall results of the Snivy fight, Pikachu could still be a higher level than 60-ish, since there could always be fights not shown on-screen

It always bothers me when people say “Pikachu was beaten by a level 5 Snivy.” Snivy doesn’t learn Leaf Tornado until level 16 in Gen 5, meaning that Pikachu was actually beaten by a Level 16 Snivy. It’s still pathetic but it’s not AS bad as a level 61 losing to a level 5.
Maybe he accidently hacked Pikachu's stats too high and they had an integer overflow. When he fought Snivy his stat's were so high that they reset back to 0.
It would be halarious if it Turns out that Pikachu is actually Lv. 99 but the developers of the anime made Pikachu faint just for plot.

I got the answer thanks your calculations Mat. What you neglect to calculate is that Snivy is actually level 16 because it cannot learn Leaf Tornado at level 5. Meaning Ash's level 59 Pikachu was battling a level 16 Snivy. And here's the direct damage calculations:
Lvl 59 0 Atk Pikachu Quick Attack vs. Lvl 16 0 HP / 252 Def Snivy: 41-49 (91.1 - 108.8%) -- 56.3% chance to OHKO
This means that Snivy will not be guaranteed okoed by a neutral nature pikachu using quick attack. As for the return hit Snivy does very low damage back.
Lvl 16 0- Atk Snivy Tackle vs. Lvl 59 0 HP / 0 Def Pikachu: 2-3 (1.5 - 2.3%)
Lvl 16 252+ SpA Snivy Leaf Tornado vs. Lvl 59 0 HP / 0- SpD Pikachu: 7-10 (5.4 - 7.8%)
Which shows that the maximum damage Snivy could do was 10% back. However Ash's pikachu had been injured and could have not fully recovered, or rather not recovered at all from the encounter with Zekrom. Thus it is entirely possible that Pikachu just has 10% of it's hp or 20% if both of Snivy's attacks were crits and so he was defeated. Now it makes perfect sense. Thanks for watching 600+ episodes of pokemon.

Not only is it possible that Pikachu went into the fight with low HP, but also it's perfectly possible that the anime 'verse works with a slightly more realistic logic in terms of health, namely that Pikachu could have simply had a serious off day with an unusually competent Snivy.

I would follow this logic with if it was an off day and Pikachu knows he is way stronger then it's very probable that Pikachu held back and threw the fight because we have seen pike be very compassionate as counter to ashs competitive nature so I am gonna say pika simply threw the fight because it didn't wana actually hurt a baby compared to it.
Like I used to go to pokemon card game tournaments and even took first place a few times but when I play against my 9 year old I hold super back and don't use any actual strategy. So she can learn and build confidence in desicion making. Pokemon constantly display that level intellect and compassion.

You're slightly correct about following real world logic just miss 2 points
1 that snivy knew leaf storm there is no way for a normal snivy to knew that
2 it has been explained multiple times that if the trainer got confused than so does the pokemon they were completely shocked why Pikachu is unable to use any electric attack and was not focused in battle
Plot twist: The Snivy had a focus sash, used endeavor, then used a quick attack.

My head-canon was always that Ash was training Pikachu between battles. I don't think that Pikachu is lvl 100, but I think it's unlikely that his level is quite that low. The calculations do prove the minimum level it could be, though.

Theory: it never says that pikachu is at full health when they start fighting, so maybe Ash simply forgot to have him healed up and he was sitting at "low" hp...

Yeah, if you think about it, even in the first season, how many battles did pikachu actually have between gyms? Compare that to how many times you get popped in the game going between gyms from trainers and wild pokemon. And you only get experience when you win lol. Ash was getting badges after losing.
What if… Snivy was holding a focus sash and Ash didn’t heal up before that battle (leaving Pikachu with only a couple of HP)?

nah the last game I played, Y, I never used the rare candies. I was saving them for the later levels where the amount of exp needed is crazy. You can easily get to levels around 60 by just beating the game with normal grinding.
After re-watching this one year later I think I’ve realized that Matt didn’t put in perspective the power boost that Pikachu gets throughout the series as well an example of this would be when Brock’s father uses the electric water generator to power a Pikachu that had to of accounted for some extra levels
And if pikachu kept going until present day then he would of fought legendarys aswell
I mean those extra levels aren't able to be put numerically so i doubt they can be held accountable as a form of bonus levels which already was an overkill on snivy
