    The very first appraisal is from the banned episode with appraiser George Juno who staged the sword segment with a friend of his playing the role of the sword’s owner. His partner named Pritchett was also a very bad guy. They went on to defraud a bunch of people and take advantage of families, paying them a fraction of the value for artifacts and reselling them for up to 10 times as much. At least one was convicted and sent to prison. I didn’t think this clip still existed. It was only aired once before the fraud was discovered. It really shouldn’t be included with the honest appraisers. It was a sad episode that could have killed the show in 1997, which is when it is from. I thought it was important to mention that.

      Noooo!!!!! Ughhh no no no... omg why did I have to see this comment, smfh, I knew I shoulda just went on to the next vid and skip gazing thru comments. I wish i could put into words or describe.. this experience i just had, after reading your comment.. I could write the same thing, because I've also done that! I was justttt having flashbacks of being in my memaws house when i was younger, 15-20 yrs ago, its night time & the happy fuzzy feeling comes to mind, and my belly's full after eating some of her southern-home-cooking for dinner😊 that warm amber colored glow of just the little end-table lamp & TV illuminating the room, such an amazing, beautiful, warm cherished memory i have of us together. The good ol'days.. that don't feel like were so long ago..
      🙏🏻😥🤏🏻💝💛 I THANK GOD FOR EVERY MINUTE OF EVERY DAY THAT I SPENT WITH THEM & STILL CAN FOR HOWEVER WHILE LONGER, I'M 31 NOW THEY'RE 71 & 76.. but I live in KY & they live in FL where my whole fam is from & lives, my mom & dad came to KY 13 yrs ago & me & my husband followed behind them about 5 yrs ago, so now my son & daughter 12 & 8 don't get to see their meme & papa like I did growing up, since we live 12 hrs apart & they're getting older so its hard to travel but they just came up to spend 8 days with us about 2 weeks ago.. so its hitting me how much times have changed and we're all getting older.. time doesnt wait for no man, or woman. I wish I had a pause button that's forsure. I'm sorry for the mini bio lol but I just felt like I needed that.. I hope you have as many memories as you can keep of you and your mamaw, of all your family. Life is too short, and tomorrows never promised. 💙❤

    I used to watch these when they were new and remember many of these. The Pancho Villa watch woman has always stuck with me. In fact when I think of the show at all she is who I think of. She was hoping for millions. So bitter.

    • @mulemule
      @mulemule 4 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Right? She became more prickly towards him as her vast-but-imaginary inheritance crumbled to dust. There's no way her father didn't have it appraised himself. He only refused to tell anyone how much he paid to spare himself subsequent humiliation. Must've cost him a pretty penny. Meanwhile, any jeweler could've told her that its serial number is the most critical starting point in tracing the provenance. Despite pretending considerable sleuthing was exerted, she ignored taking this most obvious step. She didn't *really* want to know the most likely truth.

    Back when people read books and magazines.
    That was great, thanks! I remember the episode 'cos of the quarter million-dollar hat-- stuck in the attic.
    What I am also looking for is one of the very first episodes where they had an English family on (they gave them the off-set treatment) with a 15th century baby crib with some heraldry carved into the wood. It went for somewhere close to a million.

She should have just smiled...kept her opinion to herself and allowed the show and tell to go on without a hitch. And she def shouldn't have argued about it with the mother in front of ANY of the kids...especially the young man who was proud to display it to his classmates. I swear...people have no raising anymore.

    Why do they handle old documents with bare hands and run fingers over the ink?

    • @mulemule
      @mulemule 4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Because the literal feel of certain artifacts is an added (and, in some cases,) crucial means for establishing authenticity. For example, the Discharge Order may look like it's on paper (as we know it today) but, in fact, would've been made from rag stock or linen in Washington's era. The quickest way of validating this is through touch. That said, I agree also being puzzled why he'd feel doing so again was necessary after its authenticity had been established well before the cameras started rolling. (fwiw, rest assured, the expert wasn't eating pralines prior to touching the Order.)

      I, too, found that a bit odd although her surprise Vs. its valuation seemed quite genuine. (An item that extravagantly unique in a typical American household--esp. as possible wartime swag--would've normally been the focus of endless speculation amongst family members and close friends for decades before being abandoned in the attic. I think there's more to this story ...)

    32:50 That Leedy tenor banjo is only worth $1,200 tops. I been buying and selling banjos for a long time. There is 2 of them on the internet that I seen today 11/02/22 one is listed for $800 and the other is just over $1.100

      The appraiser said the story ups the value a little bit. In your trade do you usually find that to be true (i.e., an interesting story upping an instrument's value)? or is that just Antiques Roadshow fluff?

      Maybe in 1997 it was worth that amount. Values change frequently

      @@sepiaknight47 Stories are nice but 99% of the time just for the seller. Unless some famous Banjo player owned it people just want to pay what a banjo is worth. And most of the time they don`t even what to pay that.!!

      The internet has caused prices to drop for many collectibles because people (even experts) discovered that items are not as rare as originally believed.
