Edward Scissorhands is an indictment on society - people only accept those who are different if the uniqueness directly and obviously benefits them. But they don't want to expend any effort in accommodating that difference, and will turn on you the instant you are not "useful" any more, and react negatively and violently to what they don't understand and what doesn't try to conform.

It's a shame Vincent Price's health was really in decline during that time. His role as the Inventor was originally intended to be a lot bigger but they couldn't shoot all what was planned so his role was drastically cut down. He was such a mighty fine gentleman with such a iconic and soothing voice (you may know him doing the rap verse in Michael Jackson's "Thriller" or being the original "Last Man on Earth") and he was such a joy to watch in every one of his movies. Tim Burton even had him voice the narrator for his 1982 shortfilm "Vincent". :) You can tell how much Mr. Price inspired fans and a new generation of film makers. I am pretty sure he would have also gotten a role in "Ed Wood" if his health would have been better.

Vincent Price played his last role in Edward Scissorhands. He only filmed 3 scenes because he had lung cancer and emphysema at the time. The Inventer's part was planned to be bigger. When Price's health did not hold up to the filming schedule he was almost fired but Burton said no and just used the scenes that has been filmed. He was a great actor in older horror movies which he called costume plays because most were gothic.

Um, that's not right. During one of the flashbacks that Edward has, it shows the process of how he was made through a series of turning pages on a giant clipboard or something. The cookie heart that the inventor held up in an earlier flashback was just inspiration to make a man with a heart, so he could have a son to carry on his name. He wasn't made of cookie dough.

Fun fact: Tom Hanks, Robert Downey Jr and Michael Jackson were considered for the role of Edward, until Johnny Depp was cast.
The houses in the film are still in Florida to this day and it's now a tourist attraction.
It was 110 degrees and Depp was wearing that outfit and almost passed out during filming. Luckily, he was given a trailer with AC.
This was Vincent Price's last film as an actor until his passing in 1993. Burton called him the best friend he ever had.

"Before TV programs did people blame radio?" YES. Basically any time they invent new ways of telling stories its either making people evil or stupid. At one point people thought novels were going to ruin society. Just literacy was thought to make crime rampant because if people read the Bible themselves preists wouldn't be there to tell them how to interpret it.

I maintain that what I like to call the Christmas Trilogy - Edward Scissirhands, Batman Returns, and Nightmare Before Christmas - are the best work of both Tim Burton's and Danny Elfman's careers (and yes I know Burton didn't direct Nightmare but it's very much his baby so I count it in this context).
As someone on the Autism Spectrum, I see Edward Scissorhands as very much "Living With Autism: The Movie". Everything from Edward's mannerisms to how the story and characters treat him is very familiar and relatable to many neurodivergent people.

The neighborhood was real, not a hollywood set. Tim Burton chose the location in central Forida because the skies were so clear and blue. Perfect for his vision of a fantasy land. He got permission to repaint all the homes and install odd sized windows on all the homes. They also removed all the trees and installed the artfully shaped bushes. After filming finished, they painted all the homes back to normal colors and replanted all the trees. The mall with the huge arch they visited is real too. It still looks the same today.
There's a few videos on youtube which show the same filming locations and how they look today.

"Oh. Hey, honey. We had no idea you would be coming home _early_ so we have a stranger sleeping in your waterbed. He never saw any women before we brought him to town, so he's adjusting to that. He's gonna find your presence a _little_ overwhelming.
"In fact, before we brought him to town, he only had _one_ human contact; the man who _built_ him who, for some reason, could not give him actual _hands,_ so he has scissors _instead._ He's doing a lot of adjusting.
"Oh, look at that. Now your father has given him _alcohol_ for the first time. Your father saw sense in giving _alcohol_ to a man with _scissors_ for hands when he was looking at the prospect of creating a good impression for his _daughter."_

Vincent Price died in 1993. This movie was filmed in 1989. His last "official" role was that of the narrator for the English version of the script of Phantom Manor at Disneyland Paris (their version of The Haunted Mansion). He recorded that in 1990 (the park opened in 1992).

Fun Fact: Johnny Depp and Winona Ryder started dating after this film. Johnny got a tattoo that said "Winona Forever". Then they broke up, so Johnny changed the tattoo to read "Wino Forever".

Johnny Depp is a big fan of old silent movies, and watched a lot of Charlie Chaplin and Buster Keaton. That's how he's able to express so much in this role without actually saying words.

Diane Weist, the mom in this is also in one of my favorite movies with Steve Martin. 1989’s movie Parenthood. It also has a very young Keanu and Joaquin Phoenix. And so many other greats. If you do not have parenthood on one of your lists, what are you even doing with your life.

Great call on the older Kim. The thing I liked in this film though is that, in Titanic it was a different actress portraying the older woman, but here, that was Winona Ryder in makeup.

Don't apologize for the decorations! There's 12 days of Christmas, so we're still in it for a little longer! My biggest peeve is how everyone thinks we need to start Christmas before Thanksgiving, but put it all away Dec. 26. And anyway, it fits for this movie, with the music in it oozing Christmas and being set that time of year.

I really always had problems with this movie. Kim with how she could really have ended all of the trouble if she'd just told the truth, the town turning on him because he's different, no one thinking that hey, he's got scissors for hands, accidental cuts are gonna happen. So much happening. I cry every time I watch it, because he really deserves better.
