Then Ron & John (Clements and Musker) wanted to make The Little Mermaid- but Jeffery Katenzenburg was all like “You can’t make this movie- because it’s too similar to Splash!” Then they were all like- “What color should Ariel’s hair be?” Then Jeff was all “Everyone knows mermaids are blonde.” Like- that dude (compiled with the rest of his history at the Disney company) was a total asshat!

"Why isn't Splash talked about more?"
Well, I can think of at LEAST one reason:
1984 saw a simply STUNNING array of blockbuster, and iconic, movies released that year, including:
    1) Ghostbusters.
    2) Beverly Hills Cop.
    3) Gremlins.
    4) Police Academy.
    5) Footloose.
    6) Terms of Endearment.
    7) A Nightmare On Elm Street
    8) Star Trek III: The Search For Spock.
    9) Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom
... among many others, both mainstream hits and Cult Classics (that have a fan base still going strong today!), so Splash kind of got lost in the background - but STILL managed to get 11th place in at the box office during that INCREDIBLE year in film.

Some awesome trivia: John Candy hit himself in the head with the racquetball in one take. Daryl Hannah was much faster swimmer with the tail than the SCUBA safety team. This film popularized the girl's name 'Madison.'

    Things to note:
You know lots of 'Madisons' because of this movie. Although it was a fairly common last name, Madison was for the most part, not used at all as a first name. In 1985 (a year after this movie) it became the #2 most popular name given to baby girls.
Ariel has red hair because of this film. The Little Mermaid began production right after Splash was released. The title mermaid was always assumed to be blonde, but Michael Eisner, the CEO of Disney at the time, told the animation dept. to change her hair color to differentiate her from Madison.
Splash was actually a loose adaptation of ''The Little Mermaid' - just with a reversed ending, with the Male love interest leaving the land to live in the ocean with the mermaid. In fact, there was a scene that was filmed for Splash that never made the final cut, with Madison visiting a sea witch so she could turn her tail to legs. This actually answers your question of why they couldn't just return during full moons - the deleted scene would have helped explain that she could only take human form this ONE time during said full moon.
Splash was the first movie released under Disney's 'Touchstone Pictures' banner, reserved for movies with slightly more adult themes, language or nudity that would be deemed inappropriate for a 'Disney' movie. Even with Freddy's shenanigans and Madison's nudity, the film received a fairly mild PG rating.
The recent Guillermo del Toro film 'The Shape of Water' is, for the most part, a gender-swapped version of Splash.

    • @ImmortalBroken
      @ImmortalBroken 2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

Splash came out four months before the "PG-13" rating was introduced, so possibly it would have gotten pg-13 if it had come out a bit later. (I'm guessing, but I didn't count the swears lol.)

Then watch the 1986 "The Money Pit" starring Tom Hanks and Shelly Long.
It's not a direct remake, but is basically the same premise: "building a house will consume ALL of your time and money, but is ultimately worth it."
Both are highly entertaining films, made in their respective eras.
And any excuse to watch a Cary Grant film is a good one.

This movie came out from Touchstone Pictures, which was Disney's spinoff company so that they could release more "adult" films without tarnishing the Disney brand. The two guys who wrote this went on to write Spies Like Us, Gung Ho, Parenthood, City Slickers, A League of Their Own, Multiplicity and others. Still some of the best realistic mermaid footage ever captured, even if her tail has knees ;D Seriously, though, the practical effects for this movie are amazing, especially for 1984. Just imagining the effort they went to to get all the frills and fins, to make sure they moved realistically in the water and out, even the shot where her tailfin sort of unrolls as she relaxes into the bath... crazy good work that I agree should have won more awards. Sadly, it wasn't even nominated for the Oscar for Visual Effects, although it would have been a tough fight against Ghostbusters, Temple of Doom, and 2010. Still, not enough love for just how well crafted this movie is, especially in the water scenes.

"Splash" made major stars of Tom Hanks, Darryl Hannah and John Candy and firmly established Ron Howard as a serious director. So there were a lot of firsts associated with this movie. As to John Candy, I share your love for him and suggest that if you'd like to see him in a serious role you should check out the movie "JFK". And as a bonus you'll also find that it to be one of the greatest films you'll ever see.

During and after the Covid lockdown, Josh Gad created a series of nostalgic cast reunions via Zoom, for the youtube series, "Reunited Apart." One of those was the cast of "Splash." Tom, Darryl, Eugene, director Ron Howard, others, all came together. It was quite the fun walk down nostalgia lane. Lots of behind the scenes anecdotes. If you loved the film, I do recommend watching that reunion.
One the the interesting facts was that they hired a stunt double for Darryl's underwater mermaid swimming scenes. But it turned out that Darryl was a fantastic swimmer, and could actually hold her breath for longer than the professional stunt diver. So she filmed all her own mermaid scenes. It was a part she was born to play.

They recreated the launch well enough to fool an engineer that had studied all of the existing launch footage! (There was one giveaway: in the real launch all of the supporting gantry arms disconnect and swing away at the same time. In the movie Apollo 13 launch, they swing away one at a time, I guess because it looks more dramatic.)

Ok, yes, you were supposed to assume he goes through transformation after he reaches the city, it is a fairy tale with a happy ending after all, plus that's what the original story stated. The reason you thought some of the scenes seemed like the Little Mermaid is because the Little Mermaid took artistic license and borrowed the ideas from this movie (Splash 1984 - Little Mermaid 1989). It's a shame you weren't born in my time, John Candy and Eugene Levy started out on a show called SCTV in the 70's along with several other stars you like. It was basically the Canadian version of Saturday Night Live, they came out about the same time. Anyway, whenever you see a member of the SCTV cast in a movie, you will always find more, same with SNL cast members, it's a family thing ❤. There's another film, though a little hard to follow, with Tom Hanks and another person you like to see him paired with (trying to avoid spoilers), called Joe verses the Volcano. Don't try to make too much sense of it, just enjoy it for what it is. The man with the mustache you liked was Howard Morris (or Howie Morris), he was a writer/comedian for several shows back in the 50's and appeared in several movies and tv shows. One of his most popular characters was Ernest T. Bass on the Andy Griffith show. He has an amazing history. And yes, Eugene has always had those glasses. Anyway, as always, loved the review, love you and tell Beans hi 👋.

This was a very big movie when it came out. Even though I was just a kid, I remember how popular it was. It established Tom Hanks as a leading man. Before this, he was known as the guy from Bosom Buddies on TV. He had another movie that came out the same year, Batchelor Party, but it was an R-rated comedy that didn't have the same broad audience appeal.
Splash also established Ron Howard as a director who could create big hits. He had directed two theatrical movies before this, and both were good but not big hits (I think Night Shift is an underrated comedy).
So even though you may not have heard much about this movie lately, it was definitely very successful and a career-maker for two of the people involved.

This movie was made by Touchstone which was created by Disney, so this was Disney's first adult oriented movie. Hence why Tom Hanks sings "Zippidy Doo Da" from "Song Of The South". It's one of several Disney Easter eggs. At the time, it was a really huge deal to people that Disney went dirty. Now they're allowed to say "shit" in Marvel movies (also owned by Disney) and no one blinks.

This was an insanely popular movie. Both my older and younger sister were obsessed with this movie so I've seen it more times than I can count. It probably lead to me having a huge childhood crush on Daryl Hannah haha. And if you want to see more of Eugen Levy then you have to watch "American Pie". I'm not sure you have the time to edit something like that, but he is hilarious in that movie. Impossible not to love him. And I do believe he was born wearing those glasses because he's always had them.

They are some of the funniest movies ever! Christopher Guest also played Nigel in "This Is Spinal Tap!" in which he coined the phrase, "It goes to eleven"! In fact start with that movie first! Then the one's he directed. You won't be disappointed. Love you so much! Keep on being you!

    *Suggestion for Ashleigh*
If people are sending you multiples of the same movie, maybe make a list of what you have and post it in your Community Tab…?
Then, after an unboxing event, make a post of the new movies received.
That way, if people want to send you a movie, they can go look at the lists to make sure they send you one you don’t have.
(I’m guessing community posts don’t delete over time…?)

The game where you go to a gym and say “I’d like to play the game where you hit the ball against the wall” is Racquetball or Squash.
Fun fact: despite having spent the night drinking with Jack Nicholson and arriving late to work, John Candy, in the scene at the court where he serves and the ball hits him in the head, was done in one take.
