Marij, you have to understand that Tim Burton's ideology is to flip things on its head. Burton thinks that pretty people are often the most monstrous and full of cruel intentions. And the ugly people have good morals and deeply caring. It takes time to see the inner beauty of the disfigured. While the beautiful people are adept at hiding their malicious intentions. This plays out from his growing up in the suburbs of Los Angeles. A prime example is the nosey neighbor. They are always invading your privacy under the guise of keeping the neighborhood safe.

This movie made the two leads "heartthrobs" for many young people when it came out. Some of my favorite reactions from you are the ones where you "don't know what to expect", and when you assume it's one thing based on the cover or something, and by the end it's the completel opposite. You went from scary, to sentimental crying. Love it!
Saw this multiple times as a kid in the theater. It was the first movie that hit me on an existential level though I wasn’t able to articulate it at the time.
I saw this in theatres when I was 9 or 10 and absolutely loved it. It left me feeling happy and heartbroken at the same time and music is haunting yet comforting ❤️
Edward's scissor hands were created by the master Stan Winston, who also had the idea of real scissors instead of fingers. Tim Burton's original drawings showed just long pieces of metal or glass. Stan Winston got the idea from a set of pruning shears
Such a great film on so many levels. In a lot of ways, this is an inversion of Beauty and the Beast. Edward is Belle of this world. Although his physical appearance is odd and unnatural he has a heart for beauty and wants to create it. Kim is beautiful on the outside but selfish and only learns empathy and compassion through Edward. Jim is just flat out Gaston and suffers the same fate. Even the Castle is run down but Edward makes creative art while the town is cookie cutter copies and shallow in it's aesthetic. I think it's a beautiful film that teaches empathy and compassion in an unlikely presentation.
I'm a bit surprised at how your acknowledgment of those who don't find the holidays such a happy time affected me. It's like, this adorable woman on the other side of the world whom I've never met understands.
Edward Scissorhands and Big Fish are Tim Burton's perfect examples of his magical realism, the way how a fantasy element or person seeps through or flat out invades a mundane environment and its consequences. But in Edward's case, you can see how personal it is for Burton, he made him basically his alter ego, even physically. Add to that Danny Elfman's heartbreaking score and you got yourself a true masterpiece.
So glad you enjoyed it, you nailed it: it’s beautiful. So many reactors would over analyse, demand to know *why* he has scissors for hands but the secret is just to accept that he has and enjoy the story,. The cinematography, set design, the colour palette and the soundtrack, oh god the soundtrack. ❤️ It’s a modern day fairytale and should just be enjoyed as such which you clearly did. Happy holidays !
Also, yes, it is very common for 16 year olds to get cars, especially in the suburban areas. However, for many families, these are crappy used cars, the kids often have to make payments themselves, and the reason for the cars are often to drive other siblings around, and/or so that they can get jobs (it is pretty normal for 16 year olds to have jobs after school and during the summer). It isn't all rich dads buying their football player sons and cheerleader daughters cars to play around with, that is very much a myth from another age.
For me, this is the best Burton movie, it has all the elements that he’s best at, and you can feel that this is a very personal movie of him. Merry Christmas 🎄
Tim Burton has made several "fairy tale" kind of films, but this is most successful imo. It is endearing, funny, sweet, and dark in just the right amount. Depp and Rider along with the rest of the cast do a really good job, but Depp's expressive face goes a long way to sell the character. I think some of Burton's, and Depp's, later films only capture parts of what makes this film so appealing and are good or bad because of that, but this one is pretty great on it's own.
Fun Fact: The neighborhood in "Edward Scissorhands" is an actual place; Lutz, Florida. They painted the houses pastel for the film shoot. There is no "hill/mountain" at the end of the street (or anywhere in Florida); the castle hill was added in at post-production. You CAN visit that neighborhood; it's still there. By the way, it pretty much NEVER snows in Florida. The exceedingly rare occasions when it has, and the even rarer times it accumulates, it doesn't last the day. The farther south in Florida you go, the less likely you will EVER see snow. The southern half never has. This film was, as most horror/sci-fi happens to be, social commentary. This film is set in the innocent 1960s, when few women worked and neighborhoods like these were 'bedroom communities' where husbands commuted from in the mornings to work and returned to in the evening to eat dinner and rest for the next day. Wives had to find ways to amuse themselves, which included gardening, shopping, housekeeping, raising kids, weekend cookouts, holiday parties, card games, and gossiping. Avon was a casual business that grew to prominence during this time, allowing women to make a little spending money selling to neighbors and (for women working in offices) co-workers. Avon bottles became a collector's item (and still are). What I find interesting is that Edward can be seen as a kind of 'angel', who was brought down to earth, faced the corruption of the earth, found he wasn't able to live in that toxic, suspicious, selfish world, and returned to his 'heaven'. Along with the 'angelic' soundtrack, the moment when Edward folds his arms around the girl, it's almost like how a bird or an angel would wrap wings around the person, the scissor blades resembling feathers. Edward is an innocent, incapable of a selfish thought, even in love and even in misery or conflict. Those people didn't deserve him.
This movie really wrecked me when I first saw it. I'm not an orphan nor was I born disfigured, but somehow the themes struck home, and hard. Maybe that's just something about the human condition... that we all feel alone and incomplete.
Let me tell you, this movie it was always re-run during the holidays. Every time Christmas time come around they will play this on TV. And my little sister would cry every time. Every time.
I personally got a late 70's vib from it, the solid pastel colors, clothing and furniture, the odd thing is the 80's werent really that colorful in comparison, you had the 70's then the 80's then the 90's. The 90's were kinda like the 70's color wise only cranked up a few notchs (especially the first half of the 90's were a little TOO colorful, although mainly only in clothing).

Kids getting cars in American is a necessity for many not a luxury. The scale of the country and our communities compounded with the lack of public transportation in most suburbs and rural areas make it the only option.
I visited the Tim Burton art exhibit in 2011 at LACMA. My jaw is still on the floor from his sketchbooks and the story ideas that he created but never came to life. He has developed so many different creatures and characters that his level of creativity is simply unprecedented to me. I am glad to live in an age when I could see him rise from nothing to become one of the great directors in film and animation.
Funny thing is Tim Burton worked at the first paid apprenticeship program at Disney's animation with John Lasseter (Toy Story) and Pixar founding member. Brad Bird of Iron Giant, Incredibles, and Ratatouille fame. To think all these legends worked together at Disney making traditional animation in the hopes of one day developing inventive and ground breaking animation styles and technologies that would forever change movies and television the same way Walt Disney did in the '1910s.
Fun fact: The neighborhood in the film is an actual place in Florida. They re-painted all the houses there to the pastels you see in the film. It's still there tho normal looking now.

Great reaction, I'm sure someone has already commented on this but Johnny Depp (Edward) and Wynonna Rider (the love intrest) were actually a couple in real life for a few years and if my memory serves me correctly, they were dating during the filming of this movie...I think.
I live near Chicago, and yes it is flat earth here. Nothing but horizon in every direction. I actually feel a little trapped in when I am in the mountains.

This movie did the same to me, it was very warm and heartfelt and I do consider this to be a Christmas movie despite it doesn't look that way, (same with Trading Places with Eddie Murphy and Dan Ackroyd, great movie by the way). Tim Burton was a strange man and hated the suburban life he grew up with in California. That's why he had all those Florida houses painted mostly with one color to reflect the boredom of that life where everyone did pretty much the same thing and lived the same way. The father figure in the family was very cold and distant emotionally because that was how Tim Burton felt about his own father when you read the unauthorized life story of Tim Burton.

I've actually been to the shopping center in Lakeland, Florida where they filmed the beauty salon scene. It's not too far from where I live, and looks pretty much the same, now, as it did back then.
In a lot of America, towns are spread out, and some places have no public transportation. Getting a car is a requirement. I got my first car for $24. My dad and i fixed it up

I saw this on cable, & tried to share it with my dad. He refused to watch it because it was "a slasher film!" (He also refused to record the end credits of the TV series he was taping off the TV, then got upset because *every single episode* had the last 5 minutes chopped off by the start of the next! It even said in the instructions that the tape automatically backed up before recording! I never had the problem. *I* always recorded the end credits!!) I finally just put this movie on. He finally saw it isn't "a slasher film"! My dad could be obstinate, at times.
Mary, you should totally watch more movies with Vincent Price. I believe House on Haunted Hill is public domain and there are a bunch of uploads of the full movie here on youtube. You could totally do a stream in which you set it up with other people so you can watch it with your viewers. I'd watch it with you! :D

My first car I bought when I wasn’t even 16 years old yet had to wait to drive it. Very common in America. Funny how you mention the flatness. We drove out to Yellowstone and I live in Kentucky took three days. from the Mississippi river to the Rockies was nothing but flatness for a day and a half drive or more.
My wife and I got to see this in the theater when it was first released. The same mix of emotions flowed then as Mary experiences them now. The genius of this movie in its comic-book-come-alive feel is that it was able to look at the blend of society with distillations of personality archetypes. The lesson i took away from this movie is that people will change the story in their mind so that they gravitate to be the hero of their story. "It's the easiest lie to tell. They will automatically believe any story they are the hero of."
This is such a great, great movie! And I have always had such a big crush on Dianne Wiest and Winona Ryder, that it makes this 100 times better for me. :D

Great reaction, I'm sure someone has already commented on this but Johnny Depp (Edward) and Wynonna Rider (the love intrest) were actually a couple in real life for a few years and if my memory serves me correctly, they were dating during the filming of this movie...I think.
I live near Chicago, and yes it is flat earth here. Nothing but horizon in every direction. I actually feel a little trapped in when I am in the mountains.
Funny. Most of my life I've lived near hills or mountains, so when I'm somewhere that's just lots of flat, flat, flat, I feel too exposed!

"I'm so confused by how flat this is" - welcome to the American midwest. Edit - ah I guess they filmed in Florida - which makes sense too. But when I moved to the midwest I had underestimated how flat it'd be.
This movie takes place around Christmas time but it’s not actually a Christmas movie.
This movie did the same to me, it was very warm and heartfelt and I do consider this to be a Christmas movie despite it doesn't look that way, (same with Trading Places with Eddie Murphy and Dan Ackroyd, great movie by the way). Tim Burton was a strange man and hated the suburban life he grew up with in California. That's why he had all those Florida houses painted mostly with one color to reflect the boredom of that life where everyone did pretty much the same thing and lived the same way. The father figure in the family was very cold and distant emotionally because that was how Tim Burton felt about his own father when you read the unauthorized life story of Tim Burton.
In the courtroom or on the screen...what a boss. Tim had a genius period (Pee Wee's Big Adventure) and he and Johnny made magic.
Edward's inventor was played by legendary actor Vincent Price....you should react to some of his movies....The Tingler....Dr. Goldfoot and the Bikini Machine...House of Wax...House of Usher...Theater of Blood...House on Haunted Hill....The Song of Bernadette....The Abominable Dr. Phibes

I've actually been to the shopping center in Lakeland, Florida where they filmed the beauty salon scene. It's not too far from where I live, and looks pretty much the same, now, as it did back then.

Teenagers usually have cars in the US because other than in the largest cities we have almost no public transportation.

So the song that plays when Kim is dancing while Edward is making the ice sculpture is befittingly titled Ice Dance and I taught myself how to play it on piano! ☺️ I haven't played piano in a few years because I either have carpal tunnel or arthritis. And I'm only 28! Sadface.. My hands and fingers hurt after just like 10 mins. It sucks.

I saw this on cable, & tried to share it with my dad. He refused to watch it because it was "a slasher film!" (He also refused to record the end credits of the TV series he was taping off the TV, then got upset because *every single episode* had the last 5 minutes chopped off by the start of the next! It even said in the instructions that the tape automatically backed up before recording! I never had the problem. *I* always recorded the end credits!!)
I finally just put this movie on. He finally saw it isn't "a slasher film"!

My first car I bought when I wasn’t even 16 years old yet had to wait to drive it. Very common in America. Funny how you mention the flatness. We drove out to Yellowstone and I live in Kentucky took three days. from the Mississippi river to the Rockies was nothing but flatness for a day and a half drive or more.

The religious lady had a small part in the Truman Show. If you haven't seen the Truman Show, it's an absolute must. It's my favorite Jim Carrey movie.

My wife and I got to see this in the theater when it was first released. The same mix of emotions flowed then as Mary experiences them now. The genius of this movie in its comic-book-come-alive feel is that it was able to look at the blend of society with distillations of personality archetypes. The lesson i took away from this movie is that people will change the story in their mind so that they gravitate to be the hero of their story. "It's the easiest lie to tell. They will automatically believe any story they are the hero of."
