Great video! Answered most of the questions I had. Basically a payoff between quality and versatility. Since the X3 won't be the main camera I can actually settle for the small drop in quality. Most people watch my videos on a phone, so won't notice it.

I truly believe that 99% of people will benefit a lot more from the versatility of a 360 over a little better image quality from an action cam. Most people that watches content wont be able to tell the loss of quality but will highly appreciate the original and versatile framing with the 360. I chose the in 360.

I loved my X2 and had tons of fun with it, but for the X3 I was expecting at least a jump in resolution so I'm a bit dissapointed despite the rest of upgrades. I'll have to wait for the X4 now.
Love your videos guys. I was hoping you’d cover off the workflows for social media posts and for including in imovie edits. For travel and sports compilations I’m keen to know how fast I need to be on the record button and how long at the end of the day it’ll take me to get the data off the camera and into the editing software
Great review. To me made more sense to get an X3 with all the extra special features, than upgrading from an old GoPro to a newer one (or to the DJI action 3). Image quality may be a bit behind, but you get so much more with it!

I agree great video and answers a few of my questions. I think the X3 is genuinely a GoPro killer, I’ve owed every GoPro since the hero 2 and I’ve not bought the 11 instead I’m switching to the Insta360 X3. I’m predominately using it for MTB footage

Quick question, the Hyperlapse shots on this video (with the camera mounted on the car), did you make them using directly the TIMESHIFT shooting mode, or TIMELAPSE and then sped up during editing via the Insta360 Studio mobile or desktop app? Thank you! So that's just regular video footage retimed in the desktop app to 16x or 32x (with motion blur set to ON in the desktop app). It's probably my favourite thing to do with these cameras!

Dear S&A- Can the Insta360 X3 export single lens and/or reframed 360 footage in 4K format yet ? I had the insta360RS previously and it could only export in 1080p from memory.
I have the Insta350 1 RS and I have Action 3 (as a Audio/Video guy) you always have to have a "action" in the bag and for the price they are handy to have.
Awesome work and side by side comparison. I have tested the GoPro Hero 11 vs the X3 on my channel and despite the great possibilities of the X3, the biggest concern is the image quality of the X3. Especially in some bad light conditions (cloudy weather or after sunset) the single lens mode of the X3 is really not good enough. The 5.3k 360mode is good, but still quite behind the GoPro.
But the GoPro overheats and freezes often, or is that not your experience?
As you mentioned, the exposed lenses are my biggest concern with this one
Yeah. They need a Lense protector that won't effect the picture quality.
They should make a round 360 camera and have a snap on waterproof case to protect the lenses.
Thanks for the informative video as always. Do you think editing on a Macbook Pro 2017 will be a problem with the large files? I don't want to buy the x3 and find out I need a costly upgrade of my laptop.
You should be absolutely fine. We use 2019 MBPs and they handle things easily. Previously we had mid-2015 MBPs and they handled the Insta360 One X footage fine as well.
I have a camera mount on my tow hook on the front of my car. Do they sell a case to protect the Insta360 X3 if I were to stick it on the front? I assume the DJI has a case to protect it, right?

Great video as always guys! What I'd love to see compared is the single lens mode on the X3 vs re-framed video on the RS 1 inch (since that camera doesn't have the single lens mode). I got the RS 1 inch for photos, but I wonder how it compares to the X3's single lens mode. I don't think anyone has done this comparison yet. If you could show that off in a video, it would be fantastic! Thanks!

I believe 360 cameras are the future, but I am not convinced they are ready for prime time yet even though they are getting closer all the time. I still see 360 cameras as fun toys more than anything else presently. I am going to wait just a bit longer to get one but I will get one at some point I am sure. Thanks for the video.
Thank you for this very good test! I by myself do more family videos on special occasions (holiday, xmas, birthdays etc.) and for me it is definitely the Action 3 as you can easily hand over to anyone especially to kids without having to fear of damage as it seems to be a lot more sturdy than the X3

editing 360 video may be a lot more time consuming, it may take more memory card space. there are some je;llo/wobbles occasionally. The exposed lenses appear very vulnerable. 360 video has its appeal, but for me a regular camera seems the best option. 360 cameras have come a long way. Maybe down the road. I wonder how the X3 performs underwater

Of all the cameras i have, the one X(original) is the one I always use. You can do a lot of tricks and captures everything in the video.

Hey! Those motion lapse shots are just regular 360 video that has been reframed and retimed in the Insta360 Studio desktop app to around 16x. You then get the option to select motion blur. Switch that on, export and that's it done.

True...which one is least bad really. The big issue is the EIS on these cameras requires a fast shutter of 1/160th or more (give or take) so on the assumption you have Hypersmooth/Rocksteady/Flowstate switched on then they are all highly unsuited to low light applications.

360 has to reframe and export and then use footage to do the video editing THAT IS DOUBLE WORK and time consuming. can the 360 hold in horizontal like smartphone and see yoruself in horizontal view ?
Great comparison! I like the variety of the X3 and love the picture quality of the Action 3. And, a X3 mounted on the chinmount of a motorbikehelmet is a bit bulky in my opinion. So I think I'll will buy both 😉

Both are very good cameras. For riding my e-bike, my Hobie Tandem Island kayak/sailboat, or skiing, the X3 is my camera of choice … all action camera applications. For time-lapses of fixed scenes where the camera is on a tripod, the Action 3 is my choice.
Great review. I was considering buying the Action 3 camera but the Insta 360 X3 is a far more flexible camera. One question I do have. The Action 3 cam allows a wireless usbc mic directly into the usbc port. If the Insta 360 X3 has the same possibility, then I certainly will buy the Insta 360 X3. Do you have any info if that is possible? My wireless mic is the SmallRig W1-C which works great connected to my phone.
The Insta360 cameras have a USB mic adapter that you will have to buy separately. Cheers!

A great comparison video, was going to get Action 3, but now this X3 video gives me more food for thought. I’m thinking of taking this out for hiking and trail running in the NZ outdoors, so the terrain and weathers can be rugged and unpredictable. How does the X3 performs under rain, low light (forest) and if it falls to gravel paths? Those lens look really exposed. Cheers.

Using Insta 360 one X. Pretty satisfied with this. I will only upgrade if in newer generation there is removable lens gaurd. I have starched the lens 2-3 times even though I tried mey best. and better resolution while using only one lens.

Watching your video you state that 4k video can be exported, is that correct? I understood that these 360 camera could only export cropped or reframed edited videos to 1080. If I can get an edited video of 4k standard then it’s a game changer
You can export 4K from the Insta360 Studio Desktop app. The mobile app exports are limited to 1080p. Keep in mind though that reframed 360 footage is very unlikely to actually be 4K by the time you crop all the way in so the true resolution of the underlying image is much lower even if the exported file is technically 4K.

I shoot the Sony A7S3 for videos with my DJI RS3 mini gimbal. Was curious about 360 camera but skeptical about image quality so i bought the Insta360 One RS 1" inch edition and give it a shot. Oh my was i wrong, quality and low light was impressive. From then i always bring it along for my family trip.

Insta360 has the One RS with 1in mod sensor and the 1in version of the X3
The X3 was the 360 camera that finally hooked me to get a 360. Just playing around with it the last couple of days I can say its versatility is huge. I'm also relieved that working within the insta360 apps was pretty straight forward for me and I found dealing with 360 video in FCP was fairly intuitive for me which is impressive considering thats I'd rate my FCP knowledge as basic. This camera will always be in my pack from here on out.Good stuff.
I got an X3 and its just too annoying editing the 360 footage...so I returned it.

Stewart, I'm curious. Can you explain what caused the "rotating propellor like apperition" seen at 6:58 on Alina's side of the video, for a few seconds. This happens 'after' you rotate the Insta360, not 'while' you're rotating.
Seems quite odd
he spins it two different times, once around one axis, once around another. At 6:58 he's 'twisting' the selfie stick.

Sure thing. Lens stitching. This is a pretty extreme demonstration of things when you see how much I'm rotating the camera.

Hello S&A, the 360 cam is superb and covers all bases but the price of the Osmo is great and will sell very well, personally I'd go for One X3, that versatility is fantastic but as you mentioned it's whatever suits your needs.

The lens projecting above the camera body surface that makes the 360 unique is the failing point for me. Scratch that thing up while shooting real action and you’re buying a new camera. Does it shoot 10 bit? How does it handle at freezing or below temps. Can it go underwater without a cage like the Action 3? The Insta looks like a fun camera, but I don’t think it will be replacing my Action first gen

There's no denying that the insta is the best camera for the choices it offers. But I ouldnt call it a action camera. Those lenses are so delicate whereas the dedicated action cameras are solid

A 360 gives the impression of being filmed by a drone.
I am wonder if those action cameras can replace smartphone camera with gimbal. I am making normal (not extreme) travel videos with narration. I want to buy Samsung s22. Is dji action 3 better choice? It is cheaper 😜
For me it would come down to field of view preference. For normal travel videos I personally would prefer the FOV of a smartphone (around 24-26mm give or take). It's still very wide by normal filmmaking standards but it's a much more natural FOV.

@@lukaszpiernikarczyk Probably. The EIS on the Action 3 needs a fast shutter to work so this hurts low light performance if you have the stabilisation on. Phones use OIS which can take the shutter down lower to let more light in.
In this point more quality is not the answer, and insta 360 x3 have Amazing things that make a amazing and innovative camera

Ive wanted a 360 cam for about 2 years now, but I want to reframe to 4k from 360 and it seems no one has figured that out in a form factor that isn’t the size of a water bottle lol

I would scratch the 360 lense after 2 weeks doing action stuff i have a gopro 10 and a max lens mod and a gopro max 360 . My next camera would be a gopro mini for its simplicity and weight as i mtb paramotor and paraglide . I think their getting to heavy to do do what their made to do .

Why does no one mention editing software when talking about these cameras? I like my Insta, but the editing software sucks. So does the battery life.
I'm waiting for the next version of the GoPro Max. Firstly, DJI are now on the list of U.S. Government import restrictions (so good luck getting one soon in Europe maybe), and secondly DJI the lenses are really good at getting scratched. GoPro Max lens protectors are cheaper and easier to get. Hoping the next Max drops soon (excuse the pun).

no i dont agree here .. target market for these kameras.. there you say something .. whilst a 360 cam is a great add on camera no argument there.. its no replacement for an action kamera ... i use it on an atv and its just vulnerable as hell.. vibrates like a madman.. where the dji 3 doesnt... i have a one x for an occasional special shot if i leave it in front of the atv.. it would be in pieces after a full ride... the newer models only got heavier... and 360 cams are good weather kameras.. the footage is not good enough in low light.
To be honest. The vast majority of viewers will be watching your creations on a phone , or similar. Is the X3 as good as a full frame Mirrorless? No. But is it good enough? Well, that is up to you. But I think that it is.

I need long drives videos so no overheating.
Nice options for creative B-roll, but the crappy image quality made me sell mine after less then a week´s use. Fun toy, but it requires a combo with another camera with half way decent image quality.
X3 with 2 camera cost LESS THAN Gopro.
Its a NO BRAINER decision.

I got a DJI 3 today and I am sending it back. The reason is their insane registration. Your camera will not work unless registered. Ou have 5 tries to register with the number dropping with each failure. They put stupid letter number combinations in their registration which will fail if you get wrong. I paid them good money for their camera. When I get it it is mine or so I thought. They think differently. I could care less how wonderful thei camera is and I hope they and everyone who pulls such stuff fails
Don't buy whatever I buy as that seems to be the kiss of death. Contour helmet cam with rotating lens and lasers - gone the way of the dodo. Rylo 360 started by folks behind Instagram? Sold up and moved on. Now I'm just waiting for Sony to fold...
I wonder if you didnt compare the X3 with the gopro quality because that was the one with the highest quality and that would make the X3 look like a potato camera so you instead only compared it with the DJI one.
Don't buy go pro 11 same as go pro 10 it will be heat 🔥 after 5 min of filming 4k 60fp its sucks 😐
Yes it will heat but all these cameras will heat. And no the Hero 11 is not the same as the 10. This is the worst Gopro bash I’ve seen recently.
