So I scoured Amazon and got one of these bulbs. LED’s that produce appropriate levels of UVB without any UVC is kind of the holy grail for reptile lighting. My Solarmeter 6.5 measured very similar to yours. I’m letting the bulb burn in and will wait to see how the plants and universal rock background react to the light before I move any reptiles in the enclosure. Up until your video, I was under the impression that these diodes are incredibly expensive. I would not yet recommend these lights until further testing is done, fingers crossed though.

How is this bulb holding up? Just finishing a stacked 4x2x2 for our adult female dragons and looking for a second basking fixture bulb to add extra uva and would be awesome if it added extra uvb as well! Have 36" t5 HO zoo med fixtures with reptisun 10.0 bulbs and 100 watt repti basking bulbs now, but wanted to add a LED spot and a cool side halogen as well. This bulb looked promising...

Holy crap, the audio in this video caught me off-guard XD no but this video still very relevant even today, and in fact I'd love to see someone who owns a UV photospectrometer thoroughly testing tons of different bulbs on the market (maybe the guy running VivTech can do something like that)
    BTW, some notes:
1:36 Interesting, how can they claim it's metal halide but also LED, unless maybe it has both (which sounds like a bad idea)? Or maybe it's just bad english and they're trying to say that it compares to metal halide (which is unsafe; Zoo Med tried to release an overpriced metal halide bulb and socket some years ago and the reviews absolutely bombed)
1:43 Is it a pet peeve for anyone else when companies call it a "calcium lamp" or a "calcium supplement bulb" or is that just me?
3:44 I want everyone here to know that UVC is not the only UV light that damages eyes (and it damage skin, btw). Short-spectrum UVB also does, and your average Solarmeter isn't gonna account for that, which sucks because a Solarmeter is already so expensive and a UV photospectrometer is STUPIDLY expensive. BTW, it should scare you guys that most if not all of the companies designing and manufacturing reptile UV bulbs don't test them with a UV photospectrometer. It's insane how far behind this hobby still is technologically and in terms of care standards. The "main companies" (more on this later) usually don't even know if their bulbs are actually safe for your animals. They can't without a UV photospectrometer. How's that for sustainable long-term pet health and product quality control?
3:28 Honestly, even just having a Solarmeter isn't enough, or at least isn't as helpful as many herp keepers seem to think it is. The Solarmeter 6.5 is actually about as accurate as the UV test cards that have a labeled nanometer gradient (which isn't very high praise of even the best cards) because no tool on the market can distinguish between short-spectrum & long-spectrum UVB radiation besides a UV photospectrometer. You actually may as well just use one of the better cards (i.e., one with a labeled μW/cm² gradient and a UVC measurement option; the one in this video is actually a fantastic example, surprisingly) and buy a separate UVA or UVB meter that measures in μW/cm².
We can at least partially supplement cholecalciferol anyway, so I'd advise focusing more on UVA, a care requirement that keepers have been neglecting for decades, but by all means, if anyone reading this can afford a UV photospectrometer, that'd be *infinitely better than every other measuring tool on the market combined,* seriously. Hell, if any aspiring reptile companies/breeders out there can afford to fit the cost of a UV photospectrometer into your budget when you take out a loan for your business, I'd strongly encourage doing so.
Honestly, I would love to see UV photospectrometers becoming much more affordable by new manufacturers recognizing the undeserved demand of the crappy Solarmeter product line. Anyone who knows anything about the UV & near-UV spectrum knows how ridiculous it is that Solar Light (the company that made the Solarmeter brand) has such a strong monopoly on such a subpar tool (especially the newer series that don't even measure in μW/cm² in favor of adhering to the inapplicable metric of the ferguson zone - see the interview I linked at the bottom of this comment - such a hilariously depressing scam).
4:04: Uh oh. No, that's dangerous advice. The "main brands" have had tons if problems with UVC and short-spectrum UVB damaging pets' eyes (though it was usually because of CFL manufacturing defects, which no doubt contributes to the unfair hate directed towards CFC bulbs, i.e., compact fluorescent bulbs in a coiled orientation). No company is too big to make (dangerous) mistakes and there is WAY too much brand loyalty in this hobby.
6:59 Ok, that's interesting. Arcadia is known to just rebox other companies' stuff and push them to PetSmart. Arcadia was actually pushing against LED UV technology (which, btw, is already used in UV phototherapy; our hobby is just playing catch-up, as usual) when it was first being introduced to the reptile hobby by VivTech because, at the time, Arcadia had just recently competed to push out their "new" line of reboxed fluorescent UVB products to PetSmart's shelves. Yeah, no, if you're waiting on Arcadia to give you the thumbs up on LED UV technology, you're gonna be waiting a while lol
I will acknowledge, the suspicious Chinese products don't help. They took advantage of a new market niche and stunk it up for anyone else. The only legitimate company I can even name that's working on LED UV tech is VivTech. As usual, most of the hobby is slow and stubborn. Hell, there are still keepers who refuse to acknowledge how important and beneficial UVA is and refuse to be cautious about UVC.
11:28 This is true as long as you don't let the card degrade from heat or prolonged UV exposure; some cards even come with a plastic pouch to keep it in to prevent scratches while in storage (or you could keep it in your Solarmeter pouch if you bought it before Solar Light stopped including the leather pouch, the profit-hungry scammers).
11:38 lol ... I won't harp on this too much, I already typed an essay's worth of words about this earlier.
On-topic, I think every herp keeper needs to see this interview: th-cam.com/video/b0ikLyAElEM/w-d-xo.html It goes over information rarely known outside of optical science and biology, e.g., the differences between different types of UVB (i.e., why you don't want short-spectrum UVB) as well as what every part of the ultraviolet spectrum means for our animals.
By the way, 2 years later, how has this bulb held up? VivTech claims their bulbs last up to 4 years, so I'm curious how the basically bargain bin version held up.
