Sometimes, when a chip blows, like a SuperIO, it can send far more voltage to CPU vCore than expected and destroy the CPU. We had a MacBook at work with a hole in the charge chip, 20 volts went straight to the CPU and now the board is a paperweight.

i have the previous gen of this laptop, whenever i plug it into the first usb-c to charge, the area around the charging port gets burning hot but the laptop still functions and it still charges. when i plug it into the second usb-c port to charge, it does not get hot. any idea what this could be?
Running a iron over the pads with some non leaded solder wouldn't leave behind enough solder for this use case. Dragging an iron with solder on it over pads only leaves a slight coating of solder, here you need a decent amount to bridge the gap between the chip and board especially if you have to account for surfaces not being perfectly flat. It's a very common technique with chips. You also can't just go back and add more solder if there isn't initially enough like you can do with exposed solder joints which are the type you can sometimes typically drag solder with a iron over to create a joint. With exposed joints or bridges if you don't initially have enough solder it's not a big deal as you can always reflow more solder into the joint or bridge as it is exposed but with these being under the chip that's basically impossible to do.
It's doable, with lots of flux, a knife tip and with solder on it. Just touch every pad ever so slightly. Works 8/10 times. But has two problems : it can happen that the balls be deformed and different size, if you lost flux and forgot to add more. Very little heat is applied so you may have balls which are barely hanging. With some skill it can be doable. And third problem: you have to touch up on every individual pad! That's an enormous amount of work for this.
I believe that the battery was connected and the current to supply that heat was coming from it. His ammeter was only showing what was on the usb cable.
i noticed on the reflow you didnot press the chip down against the board. is this normal for a VGA chip like this? usually you instruct to press down on componant when reflowing. but not here
I'd have been curious to know if the hot spot had been present with the power cable disconnected (thus just the battery providing the energy to heat the chip...).
Had a storm in my area Monday night causing my $300 air fryer not to work. Heard loud popping sounds, some of the house came on after 2 hours, 4 breakers popped. Took it into a local shop, I mentioned watching you and he's also a fan . He's bought some products. Uses alcohol, no thermal cam.

You have open fuse thats why your 20 volts is not drawing any current. Your io chip has vcc. Follow the short or open. With resistance checks. Good luck. Joe from SA TX.
I have Hp Omen 15 dc gaming laptop 2018 model and after 3 years its gpu GTX 1060 went bad as the laptop screen flashes continuously on and off, so I disabled GPU from device manager and used it for 2 years now the CPU (i7 8750H) is also gone bad as told by local technician. As just 1 week ago GPU properties showed error code 43 and completely dead and now laptop running on cpu shows artifacts, technician says to replace motherboard. So can anyone confirm whether it’s just some short for both CPU and GPU / some VRAM fault/ MOSFET fault or the laptop’s motherboard is completely dead? as motherboard cost quoted by technician is very high. I would replace the motherboard if there is no other option left. so reply is appreciated from northridgefix and all of the viewers.
Your kidding right? You realize how small these parts are right? Even if he could find tape small enough and thin enough it would be so finicky to work with and probably harder then the method he used. The solder won't stick if there's no pads the only worry is it pooling into solder balls next to it.
do people know? i don't think the general population keeps track of those things. i think most people see HP as a familiar brand / recognized name and therefore expect them to be reliable.
HP have very good laptops like the Elitebooks or Zbooks. Unfortunately the X360 are troublesome. Why do people buy X360? They don't care and the cost of ownership means nothing for 'em.

Yeah, I'd never trust a CPU if I have a board literally blow up like this, you have to assume it's fried.

Out of curiosity, why do we reball / repaste the chip to get the solder balls instead of using normal solder and making the balls with an iron?
Same question

Balls needs to be same proper size

Looks like an opportunity to develop and sell the NF.Clamp.
Why didn't you just reball the chip using the soldering iron or is there a reason for reballing it that way? I'm new to soldering.
another great vid,,,,,,,,,,, thanks for posting
do sell that white tester for the computer?
I think your amp meter reading must be wrong (inaccurate). If it is 0 Amps then nothing can cause heat.
He connected the battery. IC can draw the current from the battery
it is getting power from the battery..
I believe that amp meter can't show less than 50mA so at 20V there could be a little bit less than 1W.
I believe that the battery was connected and the current to supply that heat was coming from it. His ammeter was only showing what was on the usb cable.

If the donor haves the bios chips on it replace them also the ec chip makes conection whit the bios firmware
Hello from Nigeria.
You'll need a proper calibrated wire to fix that one. Lol.
And needs to be dodgy as well 😄😄
Also, there are clearly too many capacitors, some need removing.
@@ralphj4012 Of course, no capacitor, no shorted capacitor

Alex, can that IC chip be reballied by just puttin flux onto the IC, then heat up the chip for some time?
Your ec ship have not the good firmware...
Great video 👍
I hope you can find an thermal camera to attach to your microscope.
How do I get a quote on a package before sending it in?

So the air fryer got fried?
I see people use that freeze spray a lot.
guess it's just personal preference

Would the high % rubbing alcohol / IPA help remove the excess solder paste?
Doesn't the Super IO chip have to be programmed first ?

Not sure may be you have to reprogram the chip. If the SIO is good at least it should communicate with battery and give the charging light i guess.
I think you need chip holder for those small chips
It's a holy glove.
I think a few of the BGA balls were a bit too small. I think the chip is not making all the connections
On the UNI-T Meter the leeds are Input and the sockets are Output. This is why you don't have a current reading
