Cemented or Non-Cemented Knee Replacement?

  • There are 2 options your surgeon has to connect the knee replacement parts to your bone.
The first is to use bone cement - a special substance that looks like playdough so it's moldable but it hardens really fast and holds the metal parts against the bone.
The second is to adhere the implant by pressing it into the bone and allowing the bone to grow into a specially designed surface on the implant.
There are pros and cons to both and your knee surgeon will give you advice on which is best for you specific situation.
In this video, Dr. David explains which is better, a cemented or a non-cemented knee replacement.

In Minute 4 of the video, Dr. David said "QUICKER" when referring to the cement-less procedure. Based on what he explained earlier, I am certain he meant SLOWER. Slip of the tounge.

Thanks for the info. Just started my trek into possible knee replacement. The first option my specialist is trying is the gel injection.

What I like about your videos is that you are giving us information that helps us ask questions. Could you possibly do a video on how a person would proceed with an HMO or PPO type of plan in pursuing the muscle balance issues? What I have experienced is that my PCP refers to a surgeon who says “You need surgery”. If I don’t want to go down that path yet, how should I proceed?
Thanks for all the informative videos!

Hey there, that is difficult to answer. At our clinic, we do not accept insurance because most insurances do not pay for our services. This is the case in many manual physical therapy clinics. We have a great knee arthritis recovery program available if you would be interested. This program offers a structured, in-depth approach to healing your knees and avoiding unwanted surgeries. I had arthroscopic knee surgery because I had a tear of my articular cartilage. Can you do a video as to why after almost 3 months I still have pain and how long the pain may last after surgery. I still have pain on left side of the my left knee and sometimes I get pain the radiated from the inside the leg or when I got up and down the stairs.

10-20 year life for the cement? Had a cement knee replacement 6 years ago and was told that replacements last 20 years or more. When did the cementless option become available? Never heard of it til now.
