This song is not a gay anthem. Gays don't have an anthem. Only countries have anthems. This is a disco song from 1978. But yes, there is a story behind the song. Which is not about the gays. Willis, the writer of the song had said that he wrote the song in Vancouver, British Columbia and, through his publicist, that he did not write "Y.M.C.A." as a gay anthem, but rather as a reflection of the fun activities that young urban black youth experienced at YMCA, such as basketball and swimming.

Every video I have ever seen using it or doing a parody of it has gay people dancing. Since then, it is synonymous with gays. It is a little late to be claiming it is about black youths having a good time at the YMCA.

David, I first heard YMCA at a gay bar in West Hollywood in the early 70s. I couldn't wait to get back to Portland and tell the DJ at my favorite club about the song. I have danced my ass off to the song. I can guarantee you there's not a gay man on Earth who would dance with the orange monster with this song. It would be mortifying.
