    You should have an atmo to lead suit interchange up near the top of the reactor building, so dupes that need to do work near the reactor will switch their atmo suit out for a lead suit before entering that area.

    • @salemprompthous3820
      @salemprompthous3820 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      @David Campbell just keep in mind, any building that can "store" liquids (like the Aquatuner's work-process of cooling it's content lets the liquid inside) will eventually drop some on the floor, so it would need a constant backfill. (Meant as a "keep this in mind when working with nuclear waste in general" 😊 ) Nuclear waste is great as a coolant, and with a reactor up and running, it's also a *near* infinite resource

    IIRC reactors don't output steam, but water that is so hot that it turns into steam the moment it lands on the ground.
    Meaning the pressure isn't really a problem for reactors.
    That is the reason why reactors are suggested to be placed at the top of the steam chamber.

  • @Suma-lw1kh
    @Suma-lw1kh ปีที่แล้ว +1

    I built an infinite storage for nuclear waste which produces crazy amount of rad after ~200 cycles. A single radbolt generator can easily produce 1k+ radbolts/cycle if you submerge it in the one-tile infinite storage. For really long I assumed nuclear waste radiation will have a half life and decay, but they actually just keep their original rad lvl forever. I ended up stopping the reactor after I ran out of my naturally occurring Uranium ore cuz sourcing them from space is slow and a lot of work.
    Nuclear waste is also easier to work with once you have enough of them, cuz you can build the storage much closer to where you need them. It's much smaller. Having them closer also means less risk for dups to be hit by rads and makes path planning near space a lot easier

    I don't think I've seen anyone try to purify water with the power of fission. That's actually quite a good idea, you save power by not using the distiller and sieve, and produce power by cooling the steam. Very impressive, though if I were to say one thing, I'd suggest using the nuclear waste as a coolant. Since you don't use infinite storage that's about the only use I can think of for it off the top of my head. But aside from that I must say very good idea, and impressive use of ingenuity.
    That all being said, I was going to go into detail of how unrealistic the nuclear waste production is, and also how incredible nuclear fission is in reality. But I got distracted by how ingenious you were with that water purification.

    I once tried to use nuclear waste as a supply for infinite radbolts. I tried to melt the damn thing and then put it in a liquid box of sorts, with 3 radbolt generators. In order to get like100 bolts/cycle for each one, I had to melt, like 10 tons. Inefficient as hell, then I found out wheezeworts give better results for 0 maintenance. It was my payload shooting only run, no tansport rockets, just pure, AI controlled system of gathering resources. Heavily modded game, but fun as hell.

    25:45 If you put the door 2 tiles in the air and granite wall on the ground below it, you could get any Dupe that does have to work on that level quite a bit of rad protection.
    37:37 There doesn't appear to be a lot you can do with Nuclear Waste:
    - it has good specific heat, but a freezing point of 27°C is pretty high to work with
    - under the right pressure, you can turn it into radioactive, "natural" tiles for a pip-farm. Which would be good for Pip Farm with mutations, but might be bad for your rancher at these settings
    - maybe you could feed it some critters?

    • @salemprompthous3820
      @salemprompthous3820 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The radiated natural tiles would still work on this difficulty. Just switch to lead suits and a healthy dose of rad pills (unpowered fridge with a timer-sensored Mechatronic Arm inside a room only accessible by those who actually work in those hazardous areas made it easy for me to manage. Timer sensor might have been redundant, as the fridge would only be reached by those who would work in the hazardous areas, though)

      Yes, but nuclear waste always has a chance to leak out of any building it's in, whether it's aquatuners, or I've even seen it leak out of conduction panels. So it does work much better than water, but you have to be able to deal with leakage

    • @Davini994
      @Davini994 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@tilerh17 If you put the building in a full tile of liquid, 1000kg or more, then it stops leaking.
      You have to do it for aquatuners, pitcher pumps, buffer tanks. It's a royal pain in the tuchus and not worth it until you learn the trick.
      The other issue with it is that it solidifies at 26 degrees I think it is, so you can't cool a base with it. Fine for industrial applications though.

      The Depleted Uranium is my go-to for Metal Refineries. Usually exploit the Beetas for the reactor, but I always fire up a centrifuge to get Depleted Uranium in liquid form. It's not "the best" for this use, but it has a massive temp.range, and it doesn't spill like Waste. Solid Depl.Uranium is also a decent material for cold-bricks 😁
      Edit; not really relevant to OP's statement, but felt it was apropriate to mention

  • @williamhuhn9221

    Echo, you can use one (or multiple) temp sensors and AND them with the timer automation to control the conveyor shutoff supplying uranium. If the Steam temp goes above 200, you can stop the Reactor from running. Once you start adding industrial gear, they will be adding extra heat and you can save on Enriched Uranium.

    Nuclear waste is a good coolant as long as it's above 30 degrees. I use it on my steam turbines!
    You could move the nuclear waste 'catch' tiles higher. This would provide some shielding and more space for your industrial brick. Waste still falls and gets pumped
    Don't worry about too many tempshift plates. If you can make a line from the heat sources to some of the steam turbines, you'll have plenty of heat exchange.

    Nuclear (Nu-clear) Waste pump: add a liquid sensor to the pump, force the pump to sit in a small ammount of (atleast 200°C liquid waste), this way there'd be less heat (meaning power) wasted, which would also allow a few more turbines in. Those turbines would need some fenagling with this design, though, as they'd require access to both the steam and cooling. (Which is why I usually stick with our dear Irishman's design, much easier to expand).
    Lead Suits..... 'Nuff said 😊
    Would also suggest a storage for the nuclear waste, as there's an achievement to mutate all the material-producing plants, but as @Echo is partial to not using infinite liquid/gas storage, I can't think of another easy way for this 😂 (infinite storage: 4x5 Airflow box with bottom corners cut out, Radbolt Generators inside the storage tank, diagonally downwards shooting out of the box into Reflectors. From there, the bolts can go anywhere you'd want. Infinite liquid input spot would be upper-right with a blob of naptha. This was for anyone interested, as shown by our beloved Irishman 😊 )
    Otherwise, I'd say the Reactor design-premise is great. Radioactive Water-Purifier 🤣🤣 ❤ just need some automation to extract, and chill, the salt.

    iirc, nuclear waste is a really good coolant. As you are tight for resources, you may be able to cool it down and use it in some cooling loops of some sort.

    I look at this design, and I'm highly impressed, but also slightly concerned for my own max achievement run.
    I'm not sure where I could even fit one of these in my base.

    Do you lose heat generation if you don’t feed the reactor with 200 kilos of uranium?

  • @kamalotkam
    @kamalotkam ปีที่แล้ว

    You might at least use the nuclear waste to cool your steam turbines. Allows you to cut down to one aquatuner for the ten reactor turbines, because the SHC of nuclear waste is so good. If you submerge the aquatuner in more than a full tile of nuclear waste it won't leak once a cycle and it won't take corrosive damage.
    Apart from that you can really only use nuclear waste for more rads or more power. Rads you can get from an infinite storage of nuclear waste (although I believe you don't do inifinite storage on principle). The contaminants on fresh waste produce radiation. The infinite storage with its germ multiplication (glitch?) offsets the quick decay of radioactive contaminants, making an infinite storage of waste a pretty strong radiation source.
    You can get power and contaminants by capturing radbolt engine exhaust with a pool of nuclear waste. You can run more turbines on the heat and the germs from the exhaust can be turned into radbolts to refill the rocket when it lands again, similar to the self-fueling steam rocket.
    Anyway, great playthrough so far, especially in terms of production quality. The pacing of editing and narration is excellent. Great job!

    The system that you put in so the reactor only gets 10kg uranium per cycle is flawed. If the reactor is off (not accepting uranium), the system backs up a bit and holds a few cycles of uranium ready to be put into the reactor. You should put an AND gate, so that the system will send the 10kg only if the cycle sensor is sending green AND the reactor is accepting input (the switch is green).

      @EchoRidgeGaming  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The timer sensor controls the flow so I just need to take away the 1 second of green and it stops. I like the and gate idea though!

    The centrifuge sucks even more when you put into account that uranium ores have to be dug so that it loses half of its mass.

    If you can shut the reactor off, why not move the radbolt generators to sit right against the top of the reactor? You'll double their output!

    I hope you remembered to harvest from the beetas without a sting, because I think that's one of the few permanently missable achievements.
    PS: You did! It would have been awful if you had gone for all those cycles building a nuclear reactor and it went to waste because you missed that achievement.

    I think you should add Sweepy to the top for collecting the Uranium ore and regolith. could be a solution to reducing radiation sickness. secondly I'd be a good coolant second only to super coolant I believe.
