@Pravus Gaming "The amount of substances" Lack of tryptophan induces the diminished serotonin which leads to depression. So it's either deficient receptors or lack of the serotonin precursor inducing (or making it more prone to be induced). There's more stuff too but as a surface level confirmed that substances play a role in depression and happiness.

Well, if the worm greatly reduces the amount of serotonine, norepinephrine or dopamine in specific places it should cause depression. It could also just take substances used for building and nourishing your brain, also inducing depression as a side-effect of the process. The symptom is perfectly logical, no matter what kind of criteria for causing depression will we choose. The facial necrosis could also be easily explained. The bigger the worm grows the more nutrients it needs, and thus to gather them it plants its tendrils deeper into hosts head. Why is it no so lethal if the worm takes more and more blood? The worm is a parasite after all and as such, in attempt to keep host alive longer it would deliberately take only blood from non-vital parts of the head, like face, causing facial necrosis in the process.
