Most of those one lane roads with no gaurd rails were two lane roads. the force of all the water took the land out from under the railroad tracks and roads that ran along them. Almost all roads in the USA and railroad tracks follow streams. I'm speaking of rural roads which do include a lot of state routes that were built before interstate.

"WAKE UP CALL:” Imagine when raining creeks fill w/water, we all witnessed the natural rise of creeks and rivers all our lives during snow melts, thunderstorms, etc. What causes 10 foot surges & increase in depth of that water every 4 hours till a maximum depth 50ft is achieved? Could the cause be opening floodgates on four different dams or more and/or including several gates at a time on extremely large reservoirs which do exist north of this destruction be the reason for those surges that everybody testified in the region? It occurred specifically in North Carolina and Tennessee. What increased that water is they opened the next gates & we get another surge and an additional 10 feet of water with the rivers already full. This is the reality of what happened. There’s no other reason for surge of that proportion in a natural rain in 60+ years on this earth I’ve never witnessed such a surge until this storm surge on top of mountains. It is also the cause for the extreme displacement of anchored buildings to be washed off their foundations. High waters have never done that, only a surge can do that and once you got 40 feet of water full of every type of board, wood, toy, canned goods, bed frames, cars, tractors, trucks, trailers, wagons, campers, propane, tanks, concrete foundation, blocks, blacktop, concrete, bicycles, motorcycles, gas cans, rocks, and trees with the roots intact. Would that not also be the cause of the gorge left in its wake in excess of 20 feet and some locations deeper? Something's not adding up and somebody’s lying and if that’s the case it would explain no government help and a media blackout in order to take the attention off of what really happened. As far as I’m concerned, all guilty parties would do everything and anything to make sure the secret didn’t get out and exposed and complete lack of empathy for human life and media attention creating another problem that the people pulling those levers in those locales not only changed the land geographically permanent, but genocide their own people in their own communities. Neighbors, kin folk, strangers, and anyone in their wake and are directly responsible. The ones who should be under the microscope seen as the guiltiest & 30 people could pull off a catastrophe this large, very very easily. And now that they done it, they’ll have no problem repeating on a larger scale. They are dangerous. People must be found out and dealt with on an extreme level. I'm in Avery county. FEMA has been to my house several times, and has been present and active in our area since the beginning of the disaster. Other private organizations like Samaritin's Purse have been phenominal. But anybody putting down FEMA's efforts here have probably not been paying attention to what's really going on. I think the weird thing about FEMA is that after Katrina, FEMA trailers were everywhere. People complained about them as though they should have been more luxurious. LOL. Conspiracy theories arose that FEMA was building camps. Today, I don’t hear about FEMA trailers being brought in to WNC. This is troublesome, and it is fair that FEMA be challenged for being too quiet in WNC. Where are the FEMA press conferences describing the role they play in WNC and they their role in WNC is so different than it was after Katrina? If residents living in tents had FEMA trailers, children would be less at risk from being removed from affected families. Fair criticism is fair. But, I refuse to go down the rabbit hole with my imagination. We need rational assessments and respectful answers from the governor and federal government.
I worked in the utility industry for decades. Fortunately it was before TH-cam and social media. If you read these comments they are filled with conspiracy theories and hate against the government. If you read the comments from a California wildfire they are filled with hate against the people of California and they deserve it. Trust me the people who respond to these situations are working like dogs. I would often put in 16 hour days and 100 hour work weeks. Are mistakes made, they most definitely are but not on purpose. We would try and get power back on in the most logical and beneficial to as many people at possible. The average person has no understanding what is involved fixing massive damage. In my day most people would thank you but some never thought you were doing enough or moving fast enough. People read stuff on facebook or TH-cam and trust every word they read. Social media and cable news is killing our country from the inside.

NC, do not sell your land to evil people, they destroyed your homes, because they want what is under it! Lithium, you can rebuild with that huge profit
I was quite confused when you said the church building looked condemned but the building looks structurally sound and it probably just has water damage and that can be repaired and then new brick can be reinstalled. One thing I can tell is the break was not properly installed because there is no strapping to hold it to the concrete block which may be the very reason it came off.
I think that the contractor took down a lot of those bricks because they were loose. The church inside must have been cleaned out as those are new windows being installed. Then the brick will be replaced. I wonder how many of the homes that seem to be unaffected have taken in people? We had a huge power outage one year, and you know five doors down from us on the bottom half of our street wasn't affected. Not a phone call or even shelter from the cold December nights. In times like this you really find out who your neighbours are. We've been through that area over the years and it breaks my heart to see the loss. So many of us sure learn that "less is more" when we have nothing.
Unfortunately it will takes years for these communities to rebuild. No government ever helps, they talk big but deliver small, no matter who is in charge.
