As a big wrestling fan, how were you not aware that Takatani was a threat? Dake was. Takatani and Dake had a close match at 2023 World's semis. Dake won and moved on to the finals, but Takatani took bornze.
If Chael talks wrestling, I’m tuning in
Man can say more words while supplying nothing of substance better than anyone
Pushing a pen is easier if ur left handed
I'm actually pissed that he didn't cover wrestling this Olympics more
facts!
@@Xtro-1098 What does that mean

Probably forgot their magic spoon and ridge wallet too...rookie mistakes!
They also don't have certified lethal hands.
Lord Dake forgot his AG1
Japan has 8 golds in wrestling!!
Revenge for Pearl Harbor....but although there is nothing surprising, Japanese women are of a different stamp
Most in women's. Doesn't count
@@jonasf4065that's so beyond gross. They work just as hard, and not giving emit her flowers as a twenty year old is so baffling
Iran won the team result.
@@lukerockhold7032 Japan's 8 golds revenge for Hiroshima & Nagasaki not Pearl Harbour. Pearl Harbour already avenged with Hiroshima & Nagasaki LOL
dake wrestled the japanese dude last year in the world championship semi finals. it was a close match then, too
In 2019 I traveled to Kazakhstan with Team USA Grappling and we shared the stage with the wrestling world championships. Burroughs, Kyle Snyder, J’Den Cox were all there.
The Japan Men’s Team did pretty bad that tournament and the coach held a full practice a day after the tournament in front of everyone on the warm up mats.
Good for Japan for turning it around and coming out of this Olympic Games with multiple Gold Medalists.
Men’s team was in peaches and creamvile, they couldn’t impose their will with their crafty vets
Weak!
lucus tracy?
We didn’t have the crafty vets. Burroughs and Taylor were needed. PSU fucked Zahid and fucked our entire team with that bullshit.

Russia fielded some great other country medalists…😂
They were there just representing different countries

Some Americans ability to be this positive after clearly a very bad showing deserves a gold medal. How can any American wrestling fan see the glass half full here? Is it too much to just say we didn't live up to our ability and standards, we apologize, and be better next time?
Americans have to big of a ego we think we gotta win everything and were the best thing in history 🤦♂️
@@TheProdigyXKConsidering we have the third largest country on the planet yeah, it’s kinda expected we will a lot.
Until we do, we will continue to under perform. We always under perform. Given our participation rate, we should have two golds at least in Freestyle every Olympics. World's mean nothing because a lot of countries use them as scouting opportunities for the Olympics.
The fact is US Wrestling is behind. In the 90s the Juniors was in Lincoln and the Cadets in Fargo. You wrestled 20 matches to win. I wrestled Greco and Freestyle. 40 matches in 4 days. A few guys wrestled Cadet and Juniors 80 matches in 8 days. How many matches today can you make finals in Fargo?
The US dominate in sports no one else's plays (basketball baseball NFL) and in ones hardly anyone took seriously for years. UFC and wrestling. The world always catches up.
@@JamesHussain82 Other countries are playing basketball. And USA still won the medal league
@@JamesHussain82 i dont know what sports domination you are talking about ... Women wins you the most medals and succses in this olympics. You bearly beat Serbia ... UFC is showing that US is way behind in combat sports ... Wanna talk about the champions ? Who dominated the divisions ? Brazilians, Russians(dagestani's etc.).. UFC is american organization dominated by everyone else, but americans ...
@@zi326 I said seriously. No other countries take basketball as seriously as the US, that's why they dominate. What sport do they dominate that is popular world wide?
@@SuperViktorov we are making the same point. I said "took" past tense. The US were top in the UFC until the rest took an interest
Pretty sure the US went from having 100% champions, to having 3 or 4.
I felt like we had a stacked team, was very surprised that we didn't end up with a least one gold. I definitely feel like Lee and Brooks both lost winnable matches
Lee could if he came in to score, but the pushing game plan was not offensive enough. I think they came in too passive because you can't expect to win gold in the Olympics by pushing.
Totally agreed. If he had gone and shot a bunch and initiated scrambles and ended up losing anyway, that's whatever, at least he would have given himself a chance.
@@ethandupras yup, if you watch Spencer's post Olympics interview, he said he regrets not wrestling more offensive. At that caliber of opponents, you have to leave everything on the mat like its your last time.
Or maybe team usa wrestling was overrated
@@davidpark2509 Gable would have won gold for sure. But otherwise they were for sure overrated and came in cocky thinking they would win because Russia was unfairly banned by the corrupt IOC
US wrestling has been proven for a while to be not all that
Russia clearly has the best wrestling in the world
I'm not 100% certain, but I think only one guy who nearly medaled (Rassadin) Men's Freestyle was actually born in Russia. The rest of the "Russians" who medaled all from Caucus Regions.
@@johnnybeefum i mean american wrestlers come from different backgrounds too.
@@grappling.enthusiast My point was that it's truly the Caucus regions who dominate Freestyle wrestling. Very few of the best in the world are actually from Russia.
@@johnnybeefum yeah espicially nowadays
I’m getting the feeling that Team USA needs more young blood on the mat. Some of our best gold medal achievements were accomplished by young athletes.
No actually the other way around,David Taylor would of got gold
Dake’s bronze medal match vs Serbia was fantastic. Dake won me over with that performance, but Japan was most impressive in this Olympics. So great to watch the athletes this year.
chael, we did not wrestle well
Japan's wrestling program is on the rise.
prob the first time Chael giving props to a Japanese athlete
Makes you wonder if other nations doing freestyle their whole lives is the razor thin margin between gold and silver/bronze. I will always believe if we only did freestyle/greco from youth through college we’d be absolutely dominant. Still proud of Team USA. Always.
@@mlc808 the southwest Russian dudes that dominate grow up doing EVERYTHING(Judo Greco Sambo and Freestyle)
I wish freestyle wrestling wasn't a thing... Folk style is more similar to a fight
@@2regarded in that case why not do submission grappling?
@@tatertots0046 I guess I should say that I wish it was replaced in the Olympics by folk style. I'm not hating on anyone for liking it. I just don't get how between these two styles of wrestling, the one that is less intuitive won out as primary style that most of the world seems to practice
@@2regarded ur looking at it wrong, every grappling nation has their traditional grappling art(Sumo, Sambo, various forms of mud wrestling etc) Folkstyle is essentially the US traditional grappling art. Freestyle didn't win out over Folkstyle anymore than it won out over Sumo wrestling
It was not a different sequence. Dake was tired and dead wrong. I was so inspired seeing him regain composure, he me of the best ever! The Dake Bomb to close it off was so Dake.
Appreciate the take ol Uncle Flail.
We watched basically everything at least the night versions and they barely showed wrestling- 90 secs and it was about that good Cuban fellow
I love dake!!! I think he was a hair dependent on the chest wrap. He will make adjustments for the guy next time and get his hands on him so he can’t fire off that low single. It was a tough Olympics!! But they did all wrestle awesome.
I happened to catch some womens wrestling which I forgot was a thing, and was impressed by the athleticism and compete level of the ladies.
Chael you should make a vid on Indian women Wrestlers Vinesh Phogat, she upset the tournament favourite Yui Susaki giving her first international loss and against everyone else she looked dominant but was disqualified from final due to 100 grams weight miss. Not only this but her story is very complex with her being on the streets protesting just few months ago against a strong politician being accused of sexual harassment by multiple women wrestlers
As of now she’s appealing for silver as she did win her semis fairly. Anyways i think this can be an interesting video idea and will also bring you lots of Indian views lol
Not many people really care about Indians unfortunately 😔
No one cares about her except Indians
Well she missed weight...it doesn't matter if she is an advocate for whatever...
@@moto-fl3rd yeah thats true but it does make an interesting video idea for chael, will bring in lot of views for him too and would be interesting to see his takes on the entire thing
Everyone is a bigger fan than chael he literally get so much stuff wrong everyone knew that Japan guy was a serious threat
First, they didn't wrestle awesomely, Chael. Spencer Lee never had a chance in the match because he couldn't control the ties and let Rei shoot in space. The outcome was never in doubt. Only a folkstyle specialist would think so. Same goes for Brooks. He had no chance in the semi because the Dagestanis are counter wrestlers who wait for deep shots that folkstyle emphasizes. He did do better in the bronze medal match by not getting baited and took shallow double legs that kept the back away from the counter. I'm sure JB talked to him. Dake was a joke in both semi and bronze. Until we make changes, we will continue to punch below our weight. I predict a couple of bronzes in LA.
Disagree. Very disappointing overall performance by US Men. Contrast with Japan that won 8 (out of 18 total) gold medals. Something is off and needs to be changed...training? coaching? sponsorships so our best can train and compete internationally full-time for 4 years after college? Wrestling the Russians, Iranians, Eastern Europeans, and now the Japanese, is at a different level.
Combination of things. Vito Arujau couldn’t compete. Burroughs and Taylor our most clutch wrestlers didn’t win their World Team Trials. The ref robbed Zahid Valencia. Kyle Snyder got off to a slow start in the 1st period. Gable Stevenson retired to make $$$. Kyle Dake gave up 20 points. I feel like if one of those things were different we would’ve won a gold.
Not at all the reason.. US guys aren’t competing enough overseas to compete against the best of best. If they did it would force some of these guys that only compete at the Continental and World to open up their wrestling style a lot more. Competing twice/three times a year can only get you so far
I agree with everything you said except Vito wouldn’t have made a difference, he won’t beat Lee especially if he’s sucked down in weight and he can’t beat retherford unless he bulks up but I’d love to see him do that, imagine him and Yianni battling for the spot😳
@@Jimmy-x3ubingo
Thanks for bringing up Zahid during the trials. He took the loss/horrible call like a champ, but I felt not enough people were talking about it. That shit call decided the match in the last second.
When chael says the USA wrestling team is weak, what does he really means there a solid unit...
I didn’t think wrestled poorly, but what is Japan’s team doing differently? Training, nutrition, wrestling culture, etc.? No idea, but they’re doing something right. We had a Japanese clinician, I believe a world champion, when I went to wrestling camp close to 40 years ago. I still remember that session to this day and could still hit that move in my sleep. Just a different level of discipline.
Seeing how good Japan did was crazy tbh they have gotten bigger
Chael's wrestling talk is seriously the best. Separates the drama queens from the sports fans. Keep em coming!
Been waiting for this one...😂
When ur weak in a week, it will be foreseeable to see the weekend didn't get redirect in a situation were things fall apart....
If there is any such thing as a secret weapon in collegiate wrestling it is the low single. Not everyone can do it well but those who can, it is a game changer
In college (Folkstyle), everyone knows the Low Single and more often than not it leads to a scramble. Even in Freestyle it leads to a scramble but you won't see the leg pass funk so I feel like it's a slightly better move for Freestyle.
@@johnnybeefum I mean yeah, everybody knows it. Just not everybody can make it work.
My point was that the scrambles from the Low Single that was see in Folk wouldn’t work in Freestyle due to the exposures. In that respect, the Low Single is better move in Free b/c i think it’s more manageable to score against the possible counters seen in Freestyle.
@@johnnybeefum Good point
Too few Olympic weight classes
cheal as a persian I want to know your thoughts on irans wrestling.
Felt bad for Yazdani. Looked like his shoulder popped out in the finals. Darn near won with just one arm.
It popped out 4 times during the match. Less than one year after he had shoulder surgery.
Yeah but but tito definitely tapped though....
In my opinion…Burroughs, Dake, and Snyder, just to name a few, are on their way out insofar as being the USA representative 4 years from now due to age.
Obviously, David Taylor is out, too.
These men are legends and likely not replaceable in our lifetime as far as career achievements.
We are now in a rebuilding phase and will look quite different than what we’ve become accustomed to over the past dozen years.
Expect several steps backwards before getting the levels we have come to expect. Go USA Wrestling!
LOL Dake barely beat Takatani last year, right at the end of the match....he knew him.
For the most part, it was not under performance. People wrestled well. All the other countries just brought their a game. Japan just looked fantastic and wrestled their ass off.
Spencer Lee was a fair silver and a good match.
Zane was kind of a longshot anyway too bad he injured out.
Dake, just straight up got whooped even though he wrestled well that Japanese guy is just a nut. At least he came back for bronze.
Brooks getting bronze was about what I expected.
Snyder didn’t wrestle particularly well but he just had tough opponents
I’d say Mason Parrish was the only true under performer
Well I'm going to be 36 this year. I think at 40 I could wrestle for the women's team and win. Just need to change my passport to woman and I won't even need to practice very much.
I didn't watch the Olympics again. I don't remember being interested in the since Rylon beat Karelin. I'm glad you're still trying to keep it alive. Godspeed. One of the big reasons is they tried to get rid of wrestling a sport that literally defines the Olympic going back to Greece while adding break dancing. It is concerning because if it dies or wrestling dies a key martial art skill suffers. The martial arts matter. It's what soldiers use and policemen and anyone just needing to defend themselves. I think about Chimaev's description of his country and the culture of wrestling. I'd sure hate if we lost that.
"Japanese wrestler didn't have a muscle on him" haha Chael is Ruthless haha 😂
Shout out to Team Japan. Didn't know how deep they were into wrestling
Been trying to find Kyle dake semi match can’t find it anywhere
I think it was on peacock
I don't comment much but I have to agree here, I was really confused at people saying we needed to re-evaluate and that we did poorly. our guys wrestled extremely well, our losses were very close matches, spencer lee really only lost by criteria. I thought we looked great, there are just some absolute killers out there, it happens.
First time US didn’t get a Gold in Freestyle since 1968. Y’all Gen Z ers crack me up.
How did chael not make a video on mijain Lopez winning gold??
No competition in Greco roman anymore. No one goes into it. In ten years a non wrestler may win the greco gold just because there's no one for him to wrestle
Maybe in the US Greco is not as strong as freestyle, but worldwide it‘s much more competitive.
Dagestan 3 gold. Jamalov,Ramazanov,Tauzdinov
Surprised Chael didn’t mention Spencer Lee at all. He came really close to gold, closer than Dake, in fact.
The opposition had studied their opponents very well.
5:53 Lmao
Bruce gender genner it works 💪
Colby should have been there
For what? As standby to call the cops if any trouble breaks out?
Dake let off the gas and hand fighting against Japan. Knew he was done soon as he gave up big move.
You’re absolutely right Chael. I think I was just reminded of how hard it actually is to win Olympic gold in wrestling. 😂
They fell apart..
After some reflection I think USA wrestling produced a solid B performance, but it didn't fee like it while I was watching. I think our expectations got a bit skewed knowing that Russia would not be competing in this Olympics. The Russian wrestlers technique and state sponsored "vitamin program" are legendary. Their absence created an enormous opportunity for our athletes. Our skewed expectations made us think USA wrestling was going to have the tournament Japan had and probably already penciled in 4 gold medals for the men's freestyle team alone. If we compare USA Wrestling's performance since 2004 (1 Gold, 3 Silver, 2 bronze 6 Total), 2008 (1 gold, 2 Bronze, 3 total), 2012 (2 gold, 3 bronze, 5 total), 2016 ( 2 gold 1 bronze, 3 total), 2020 Olympics (3 Gold, 2 Silver, 4 bronze 9 Total), and 2024 (2 Gold, 2 Silver, 3 Bronze 7 total) we see it was the second biggest medal haul during that time. With all that being said I wanted to see more. I know they wanted more. Despite it all, I'm proud of the effort they gave and the way they carried themselves in both victory and defeat.
The funny thing is razambek zamalov, magomed ramazanov and akhmed tazhodinov the 3 gold medalust are all from dagestan but compete for other countries 😂😂
With a ton of due respect. But Kyle Snyder looked so winded during his matches. Did anyone else notice this. When you make it to that level ,damn you shouldn't be sucking wind.
If we had a wrestling promotion that is something like Polaris Grappling where the athletes get paid at least 3-5 grand a match, we would be much better off in the Olympics. Additionally, participation would increase also.
Make it happen Chael!
Cheawl said this a year or two ago and I fully believe it. The US needs to get off the ass and focus on Greco. If you’re not making the freestyle team suck it up and make the Greco team if we had even one or two Greco medalist every time, we would be ahead of everybody.
Thanks chael for continuing to cover wrestling!
We obviously need to make a change. Need to send some coaches to Dagestan. Yes the mindset is important but obviously their technique is as well.
I was 3rd Greco and 2nd Freestyle in 96.
What level?
@@popvelcro7555 in Cadets. I took 3rd in Juniors also. So cadets were 15/16 and Juniors were 17/18. I only wrestled 1 style in Fargo in Juniors. Still wrestled 20 matches because it was a round robin tournament. You wrestled people who had 1 loss. If 2 losses of course you were eliminated.
Matt Lindland sure seen the writing on the wall huh Chael ???
I look forward to World's so I can see ten weights.
I was waiting for DC to post something from the Olympics , since he said in an interview that he wanted to take Khabib and Islam their . From things he has said to askren and others DC deems to be a teal cheap skate...
It looked like dake was thrown off by the ref, giving two and two and that hesitation.Led to him giving up the leg.Lace
Dake was making me nervous when he was yelling at the refs, I thought he was losing his cool too, but he got it back quick and threw that mfer
US does not study the sport of Greco and Freestyle, cause if we did we would be doing it starting in Jr all the way to college. We study folk style. You are a karaote guy going to a taekwondo tournament. Its different. And this gap will get worse the longer we have to focus are attention on 3 different styles. Focus on one style seems a lot easier than 3. Boxing is not bare knuckle fighting.
really thought we were gonna have a gold from spencer and kyle...was a bummer overall
Thank you for bringing shine to Olympic wrestling
Gino Petriashvili was the only winner that mattered here.
This was a solid US team. Sometimes it's just not your time.

Edit. You already admitted it's a FAKE SPORT uncle Chael
We just didn't have the right mat strategy in the big matches. Almost like we were wrestling scared.

I’m not a wrestling fan, but I don’t dislike it either. He has a way of talking that makes the average guy or gal engaged for the entire video.
The USA has 2 gold medals in olympics 2024. Da fook dude you're wrong.
Iran got more medals in wrestling.
And Dagestan has 2 Golds whilst not even being at the Olympics!
Why is Mens heavy weight greco the slowest sport known to man??
Because moving 260 plus men around is hard 😂 even with good technique. You just don't get that level of speed, agility, and fluidity that lighter weight classes have. So combine being big, heavy, and a limited areas of attack the matches slow down
Idk if this is a sacrilegious heretical thing to say but maybe the US should have Freestyle and Greco-Roman be the main styles for high school and colleges. Look I could totally be wrong here but maybe if we make our programs cater more towards the international rulesets we would do better there. I know it’s probably never going to happen tho
Totally agree with that but how are we just not speaking about the Cuban wrestler who has literally won Gold for 20 years in the Olympics
I’m a huge fan of wrestling but I will have to say that certain sports in America have become overly pretentious and wresting is one of them. In high school we only wrested 2-1/2 months out of the year and all of the rich kids/kids with connections would make state because they had the financial ability to practice/compete year round. I remember watching Jordan Burroughs lose in the Olympic qualifiers and the crowd was disrespectful and the opponent was cheering like he won a price and then we went into the games and only the women/aaron brooks wanted to actually win.
Its honestly amazing that America manages to have top wrestlers at all with the culture of the sport the way it is. Its very regional, niche, and some cases cult like.
The one thing I will say as someone who wrestled in Tennessee, a bad state for it, is that everyone who was wrestling was all in. No distractions. Bradley central had been the top wrestling school in the state for my entire life but eventually got surpassed as most of the kids on the team were poor or struggling. They couldn't afford the summer camps and eventually we just became a step behind technically
Wrestling in America fails to get the best out of its athletes
Dude …Dake knew the Japanese opponent.. he barely beat him the year before at the world championships

Despite that fact, US Olympians outpaced second place China 126-91, at least in total medals. USA USA USA USA USA We're the best in the world, and the rest of the countries can suck my butt. And plus, all of them come here to train anyway.
It’s obvious that wrestling folk style from childhood through college ultimately is to the detriment of the US in the Olympics. Folk style is awesome, but every other country does freestyle and Greco their whole lives. They should add folk to the Olympics.
Who knows if sidavok was there if it would have mattered?! Lol yeah right from the angle that USA dake wasn't going to win a medal anyway.
Sidako the reigning two time world champion who whooped on dake and burroghs
if sedakov was allowed in the competition he would have won the gold and the Japanese dude the silver.

Winning Gold isn't everything it is the only thing!
I feel like we would win more if we didn’t wrestle folkstyle. I prefer folkstyle but it hurts us in the international scene
The next time DC and Islam debate wrestling again will be hilarious
