Oliver Stone wrote on March 3 about Putin's "mistakes": 2) "Overestimating the military's ability to achieve its objective." - He doesn't say what the objective was and Lex doesn't ask him.

    • @klausbloemker1277
      @klausbloemker1277 2 ปีที่แล้ว

@Max M - The objective of Putin's invasion of Ukraine was to occupy Kyiv, arrest (or kill) Zelensky and install a Russia-friendy govenment. All on the assumption that Russians would be welcomed. After all, aren't Russians and Ukrainians historically 'one people' ? That assumption was wrong. - But Oliver Stone didn't get that. Nor did Fridman. - When I compare Putin's Ukraine war to Hitler's annexation of territory to Germany in 1938 (Czechoslovakia), Hitler got that without one shot being fired. - Compared to Hitler (in 1938) Putin is a fool. Don't get me wrong.

I am not one to defend the western MSM, but on this issue their coverage is accurate. I am in Poland rn, a town near the Ukrainian border. I have seen Ukrainian refugees (all women and children) pour over the border and settle into churches and other public buildings.I have also met foriegn volunteer soldiers coming back from fighting in Ukraine. These guys showed me videos of what some of the Russian soldiers are doing to these people. There are people in the streets with bullet holes in their heads and hands tied behind their back. One also told me he saw a dead thirteen year old girl with her legs spread open with the "Z" carved in her flesh. He actually started to cry when he told me about the things he witnessed over there. This guy was an American Iraq veteran, and he told me the Ukraine war made his experience in Iraq look like a camping trip. This is WWII level of destruction on a sovereign European nation that was merely trying to join the EU and NATO. Any counter argument about "Denazifying Ukraine" or "retaliate against NATO expansionism" is pure propaganda.
Stone is leaving out a lot of pertinent details when he criticizes Ukrainians and the West. The Moscow regime brainwashing the people of the Donabas with anti western propaganda via public radio and then arming them in 2014 and encouraging them to wage war against the democratically elected Ukrainian government in Kiev is what started this all. Moscow is notorious for dividing the population of their perceived enemy and then conquering them with brute force. Claiming they are invading to "protect ethnic Donbas Russians from Nazis" is simply propaganda, and it does not in any way justify a full fledged invasion.
An even more important detail he conveniently left out is in 2021 the Civil war in the Donbas was coming to an end. Not nearly as many people were dying in 2021 than in 2014 and 2015. Russia is responsible for ramping up the tensions in the region. NOT the west.
Yet, it is funny that the only time Russia started to interfere with Ukraine was when pro western Ukrainians had a populist revolution and overthrew the corrupt Russian backed regime in Ukraine. Ukrainians have suffered under the yolk of Russian tyranny and corruption for years, and they reached a breaking point and started the Euromaidan uprising. I should also add, In the 1930s Ukrainians were starved to death under Stalin's rule. Millions of Ukrainian Kulaks died and some even resorted to cannibalism. These same ethnic Russians in the Donbas that are anti Ukraine worship Josef Stalin, the man who is responsible for these deadly actions that eliminated millions of Ukrainians. It is not hard to understand why Ukrainians feel threatened when Moscow arms these pro russian separatists.
No one is denying that the nazi azov Battalion exists, but they have very little political power in the Ukrainian government. Kiev views them are useful idiots to fight on their behalf so they did in fact arm them. They took the "ends justify the means approach" to the situation. I agree that any war crimes they commit ought to be exposed and the perpetrators ought to be prosecuted. I do not agree with any cruel treatment towards Russian POW's or civilians.
The NATO expansion argument is really easy to dismantle. Before Feb 24 2022, NATO was not a threat to Russian security. Latvia, Estonia, and Lithuania are have been NATO countries since 2004, and all three of them border Russian territory. NATO has never fired a single shot at Russia. When Russia claims they view Ukrainie becoming a NATO member as an existential threat, it is not rational, given that fact that NATO has bordered their country for over 20 years and never took hostile action against Moscow.
The only thing that could have prevented this war is if Ukraine became a NATO memember sooner. It really is unfortunate that this did not happen. All the the responsibility for this bloodshed is on the hands of the Russian oligarchs that instigated it.

Let's not forget they shot down a commercial airline...this isn't a bunch of rag tag farmers with rifles. This is thousands of Russian and russian Ukranians well armed and organized. It isn't a surprise though that Russia is using the " liberator" card to push for more resource rich territory though. The west is doing it too. But this ends quickly if Russia opens the ports or export of grain and pulls out or at least negotiates a peace based on the eastern regions. They aren't going to win this war in any way long term.

One can say that is "hog wash" BUT that is the justification NATO gave and they consider that ok, if its good enough for them its good enough for EVERYBODY.

For him to act like this is a "death squad" which randomly goes around killing is retarded. From the point of view of Ukraine, the DPR and LPR are the same as the IRA is to the UK. The difference is the Irish government also knows what kind of scum gets involved in the IRA and also categorises them as terrorists, but the Russians go "no, we like these guys, so what if they are completely stupid and struggle to hold a staged referendum..."

@Pawel Kita, I’m curious if you are aware of the civil war that has been going on in Ukraine since 2014. Kiev has been killing thousands of Russian speaking Ukrainian civilians for 8 years.
Have you investigated how the coup in Kiev was organized and who was involved in it? Do you understand the USA has played in the coup and the following military activities in Donbass? Have you seen what Ukrainian nazi terrorists have done to Ukrainian-Russian in Odessa in 2014?

Had we acted to support peace in the Donbass over the period 2014-2021 and showed willingness to put NATO (aka US) activity in Ukraine on hold, and Russia had still invaded, then we would know their stated motive was a ruse. But we didn't do that and we'll never know if that would have brought peace to the region. We are now living with the consequences. To have tried all diplomatic effort is not appeasement. Avoiding war is what great leaders seek to do. War is the result of weak leaders.

This has been my point from the very start. All we had to do was act in good faith. Support a rival party fine, but not a coup by extremists. Do everything the right way so that if Russia *still* goes out of pocket, we would have a FAR easier time getting China, India and the global south to condemn- without coercing them. Unfortunately that timeline doesn't exist.😔

Mr. Stone has a very interesting position about the rights of nation-states. He seems to suggest that if a country takes territory of another country, the country whose territory was lost should not attempt to cover it. So, I assume he would be OK with the annexation of Alaska by Russia, the annexation of Texas, Arizona, New Mexico, and California by Mexico, and the states along the US - Canadian border by Canada. He definitely has an anti-Ukrainian bias.

Alaska was SOLD to the US. And the states you mention are Mexicos rightful territory much more than the US. But of course the original native Americans are the only ones who have an actual case for “ownership” even though the natives didn’t subscribe to that concept.
It’s kind of funny how you think your comment shoots down Stone’s argument, but if you actually believe and follow international law, territory cannot be taken by force.
Crimea is very complicated because it was a part of the Russian SSR. But was gifted to the Ukrainian SSR in the 1950s I believe. But the population there is overwhelmingly supportive of Russia. And what Putin did was illegal, but this was due to the extremist leadership of Ukraine as Oliver Stone has stated and documented.

@@lampegutt123 Thank you so much in engaging in conversion.
I am feeling a little confused about the first paragraph of your comment.
I hear saying that because Alaska was sold (notwithstanding the issue of native Alaskans whom the Russian Empire appropriated the territory from), so Russia should have no claim on it. I am understanding your line of reasoning correctly.
While you concede that Mr. Putin's actions are illegal, you also justify his illegal action by citing the "extremist leadership of Ukraine."
I would be grateful if you help me better understand your point more clearly.
      1. How is the Ukrainian leadership "extreme"? Are you open to giving some specific examples that would help clarify your view for me?
      2. You seem to suggest that if a nation deems that another nation has an extremist government it has a right to invade the country and other countries should just stand by let the invasion happen? For example, if the US decides that Belarus has an extremist government, Russia should not support Belarus. but support the US's invasion?
I look forward to your reply so I can better understand your line of reasoning.
Thank you again for your thought-provoking reply.

@@resrussia Firstly, thanks a lot for your constructive comment! You’re right that the natives of Alaska were never asked for their opinion on the matter.
The current leadership of Ukraine was instituted illlegaly by a violent mob( who were in fact heavily funded by the CIA) to keep Ukraine from signing a trade agreement with Russia. Lukanhesko actually chose the deal based largely on the fact that it was more beneficial for Ukraine. This can be verified by anyone.
But America for some reason was hell bent on dragging Ukraine into NATO.
And so they supported a coup against a democratically elected government (the election was determined fair and transparent by many different commissions) you could compare it to a successful Version of the January 6th events in Washington D.C
When in stead the Ukrainians could have voted Lukanhesko from office through elections. Neither Russia nor America had the right to interfere in the democratic process of Ukraine. And after this successful coup, American military support gained steam and Russi saw this as a major threat. They had proposed a neutral Ukraine previously akin to Finland, but America was not interested. And so I have to conclude that the Americans instigated this whole terrible conflict by pulling Ukraine into the NATO alliance. Something Putin had said since 2007 was a red line. There was no justification for the coup that took place in 2014 as the president was elected legitimately.
