  • Only 8% of people receive important clinical preventative services recommended for them. What if public programs could be put in place to address risk factors before severe illness sets in? Dr. Wayne Giles, Dean of the School of Public Health of University of Illinois at Chicago, describes a proven model when academic institutions and community organizations come together to address local needs and risks. Dr. Wayne Giles is the Dean of the School of Public Health of University of Illinois at Chicago. He joined UIC after serving for 25 years as a leader at Centers for Disease Control and Prevention focused on chronic disease prevention and health promotion. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at www.ted.com/tedx

This is my Prayer and my Mission. I am actively planning a health promotion and health education wellness program that is based in Birmingham, Alabama. Thanks for sharing this message. All we need is collaborative "willingness".

This happens to so many people that needless and excessive stress in childhood and beyond creates severe illness in adulthood. I’ve seen it happen to people around me and to some extent to myself though it was later in life issues. Most health issues don’t need to happen. Recognising that certain communities don’t have access to basics, basics that would completely prevent needless health issues, would turn around health fundamentals for the better.

The reality is people do what they want to them and not what you tell them. It's naive to think that all you have to do is tell the pt and they'll do it. We know smoking kills, we know obesity kills, but that don't stop us from lighting up the newport or eating that chocolate cake.

@@erinjackson6705 it's not our job to come up with a solution. You give people the info, if they want to change they have the correct info to go about change. and if they don't-well that's also their right.

Very valuable thought. If we get our what to do, what not to do, how to do and doing it, paves the way....Sanjay, Researcher, RMC, Papua New Guinea 💚🙏🙏🙏
