I always felt that Evil Twin Biscotti Break really defined "pastry stouts" in that they didn't advertise it as an adjunct stout like Cigar City, etc., but instead advertised it as a bridging between sweeter type food and beer, which I think is the real line between "adjunct stout" and "pastry stout".
I had the pleasure of trying both Bianca and a locally made slushy that were served in the first Tel Aviv Craft Beer Festival last week. What a time to be alive for a beer lover!
Amundsen probably deserved a mention (would argue even more than Mikkeller) there with their Dessert in a can series. I do love a good Pastry Stout from time to time... it's crazy to see how some "puritans" go on a rant against them sometimes. Some people just don't like fun.
Consider yourself lucky if you can even find these sweet beers, here in California, US all people really want is fruit beers. How many different brands of raspberry beer do you need??? Dessert in a can, that's what I demand!!!
Guys I love your content and I’m so grateful with you guys putting out content every week for us geeks, because thanks that I’m absorbing knowledge threw your videos I was able to land a dream job as a customer service at The Wine Factory here in New Westminster BC, Canada. I’m helping people brew their own wine, ciders & the controversial hard seltzers for us beer geeks. Please keep the great content that you’re helping us geeks more than you think.
@@TheCraftBeerChannel Thanks mates! I’m learning a lot about wine making now and also as a employee perk, I can brew my own beers at the shop! So literally a dream job 🤩
Kind of reminds me of the collaberation between Rogue Ales and Voodoo Donuts a number of years ago. A lot of people seemed to hate those as "novelty beers" but I loved them.
Henok seems like a good bloke, no real ego he just seems happy to talk about beer! I'm going off the style a bit having previously loved it, I find that once they go over 10% abv they get really hit and miss, even a lot of acclaimed beers I personally don't find balanced. I think 7% is the sweet spot where you can get a good body and a lot of flavours.
I wish I could smell the beers you had there. Wow And might I add, Henrik is the epitome of a great host. What a gentleman cracking that Närke! Cheers!!!
1) No Evil Twin mention? Imperial Biscotti Break was my first 'pastry', back in '08 or '09. I wasn't making much $ back then but when i mustered the courage to pay whatever it was I paid for the bomber couldn't have been more thrilled. Savored it for hours. 2) Angry Chair is not play'n around with the stouts. Was able to visit for the 1st time in Feb and it was great. 3) Omnipollo collab! You 2 gents can die happy! CHEERS!
wow! What a line up of beers in front of you. Please tell me you got to try them all? Obviously not on the same day but, over a couple of days. Another great video from you both and Henok is a brewer legend!
Edmontons Sea Change Brewery has a beer called Turbo Stout, It has a local sandwhich shops cronuts added into the mash I guess, and its one of my favourite local beers. And in regards to the slushy beer, I have always been the guy that sticks beers in the freezer too cool faster, occasionally I will forget and sometimes they will hyper freeze. They will still be liquid until you pour them then you have this nice slushy beer and Ive always loved it especially when its a good stout. So yeah I definitely see the appeal of a beer slushy. Kind of a rare special treat for me. The only downside is if you dont realize its hyper frozen right away and dont pour it into a glass its damn near impossible to drink out of the can. lol
Another great video guys! Really like your channel and looking forward to seeing you visit more breweries around the world. Can I offer a small suggestion? Perhaps it's just me, but seeing (and hearing) that first reaction when you try a new beer is super important and something that should be done with that alone in focus. I.e not while someone is talking as it kind of falls flat, almost like you don't appreciate it as much. I'm sure you do, but not being able to show emotions because you obviously don't want to interrupt the person ruins it a bit. I think it would have a much bigger impact if you would finish talking about the beer and then try it in silence, see your facial expressions etc, followed by your comments and discussions about what you just experienced. Make of that what you will, it could just be my own personal preference. Keep it up guys, love what you do! :) Cheers /Fred
@@alexkalafjr.4880 Well how many thousands of regular stouts and IPAs do you need in the beer market? I've always looked at the dessert beverages as combining two vices so it's wonderful. They used to make a lot of sweet vodkas but they stopped for the most part. And I say the same thing, how many brands of citrus or cucumber vodka do you need?
@@alexkalafjr.4880 Everyone can like what they want, but when they discontinue things that are more diverse or limit the distribution which is even worse while keeping the market oversaturated with the tried and true (apparently), it really annoys me.
Pastry stout is what happened when some knucklehead brewer handed a patron a sample of un-hopped first runnings of a RIS, customer said "holy shit that's good. It tastes like marshmallow chocolate cake. Do you sell it? I'd pay good money!"... and the owner overheard.
I wonder if you could get a snow cone type imperial stout... the ice cream truck would pull up at the house and instead of the neighborhood kids running out it would be all the adults 🤣👍 cheers Guys, Mike in NZ
I do like a pastry stout occasionally but can we please get them in 330ml cans or bottles? 440ml of a 10%+ impy stout is always way more of a struggle to get through for me than a strong IPA. Have had some bangers from Omnipollo in recent years in this exact size but other than Amundsens dessert in a can series the rest of the market is generally bigger servings.
I have half then tightly cover the can with cling film and keep at the back of the fridge for the next night. Fridge is 1c so barely any carbonation is lost.
How can you guys just ignore the fact that you tried probably one of the best beers in the world and didnt talk more about it? Närke Stormaktsporter is the godfather of darker beers in that genre!
Haha well we were there to talk about Omnipollo's beers! Plus we actually had a bottle of it the night before, too. It's truly wonderful beer. Nuanced, but so bold and exciting.
I sure would love to try some of these beers in the US but they don't sell them here or even ship! God, why is this so difficult in the year 2022 to buy a beer from any company in the most populated state in the nation, California?!?!! Like I am shopping for the cure for cancer or something here 🤬🤬🤬
Why doesn't all craft breweries have a beer slushy machine??? Beer ice cream for all! Really informative, really entertaining, brilliant work as always.
I live within walking distance of Other Half and am burnt out on the turbo-octane, super sweet stouts and believe the market is correcting itself a little bit with slightly drier, sub-10% adjunct brews.
Pastry stouts are too sweet for me. Basic chocolate stouts are great (if that counts as a pastry stout), but when they start throwing in peanut butter & jelly, or marshmallows, it's like drinking diabetes
No that is exactly what I want, no such thing as a beer that is too sweet, I can't even find these in the store so I have to try to make my own marshmallow flavored alcohol! I am going to use marshmallow flavored syrup.
I’ve tried a few beer slushies at several breweries and they were…just fine I guess. When they are double the price of any pint and you get about 10-12oz, it seemed kind of like a weird extra thing for hard core beer nerds to flex about.
Not a fan of pastry stouts. At all. Just a ruined stout, really. I've tried them and 99.9% of them taste like cough syrup to me. If it's your thing, more power to you. Enjoy, by all means.
