I absolutely love Anspach & Hobday beers. So good to see you interviewing them. Their porter is darn good and to see it on nitro and up against Guiness is fantastic.
I live here in the U.S...and just got a job as a brewers Assistant!! I'm really excited...and as a BONUS, I'm continuing my 250 year old family tradition...My G.g.g.g Grandfather William Weller owned Wellers Brewery in Amersham, England! Throughout the 18th and 19th centuries it was one of the largest in England. 😀... The family is also the subjects sung about in the Viral TikTok and Yahoo channels..."Wellerman"
I live in Western Australia but we did the Bermondsey Beer Mile a few years ago. Ansbach and Hobday were clear winners. I only wish we could buy their beers in Perth.
Anspach & Hobday really are the unsung heroes of independent craft brewing. Whilst many breweries make wild and sometimes bizarre claims, A&H let the beer speak for itself. Great to see two of the nicest guys in the beer industry getting the recognition they rightly deserve… now get London Black in nitro cans for the rest of the UK!! 👍🏻
Trouble with Guinness is it’s so hit and miss. You can get something truly delicious in one pub then get an atrocious pint in the next. It’s part of the charm - find a good Guinness pub and you’ll come back. But i think twice before ordering in most UK pubs.
@@oscarosullivan4513No. It’s the same everywhere; it’s a myth that it varies. And it’s fake-nitrogen is what makes draught Guinness Guinness, nothing traditional about that.
Guiness has done a great job marketing its artificial stout to the Irish. Ever since the 1960s draught Guniness is nitrogen infused porter. It ain’t real.
I cannot begin to express my excitement to see this video about a porter brewed in London, especially with the vignette about oysters. I was always disappointed that Fuller’s London Porter was never available on cask at their tied pubs whenever I visited during the summer until I saw it on tap at the Churchill Arms. But I was over the moon when I enjoyed a Kernel porter and a stout in Manchester on another visit. IMHO nitro contributes to a great mouthfeel but it can sublimate some of the more sharp edges in the taste so the beer loses some of it’s complexity. I would look forward to trying this Anspach & Hobday porter on nitro on my next trip to London, but would absolutely love to try it as a cask ale. I also love the emphasis on the various malts, but with Kent so close by, have these brewers considered losing the hop pellets and incorporating actual hop cones in wet hopping into the brewing process?
Well sadly wet hopping isn't possible on a commercial scale as they only last a few days after being picked. As for whole cone British hops it would be a lovely thing to see, but the brewers have to use what makes their beer taste best!
@@TheCraftBeerChannel I appreciate your speedy response. I’ve put in an order for your book, The London Craft Beer Guide, for reference in planning a long overdue, upcoming trip to London. My go to safety pint when there is no cask is draught Guinness. And, to be fair, for such a macro icon, it is a decent beer. I think it's that slight sourness on the finish that makes it refreshing. London Black looks really enticing. Can't wait to try that. Love an oyster too!

@Ciaran Hegarty 100% agree with you just back from Dublin 2 weeks ago and the pints of guinness were phenomenal. There are stand outs in the UK I had but as you said the average in island was just as good as what I thought was best here.
I love Anspach & Hobday, firstly bought it because of the incredible designs on the cans, but it quickly became one of my favourite brewers. When I went to London I had to go to their taproom in the beer mile and the guy behind the bar was amazing and enthousiastic and made the experience even better. Their porter is great, but the one beer that blew my mind was the Pigeon Queen, that was a recommendation from the barman; a great bitter citrusy IPA .

Looks good. Love Anspach and Hobday with their respect for traditional beers. We sell a Scottish porter on nitro at my work and it really works well. Very smooth with none of the bitterness of stout
In Ireland traditionally we take our oysters not with lemon juice but with vinegar and fresh cracked black pepper and a little salt. I suspect that's how they used to do it in England as well. I grew up with it and I'll stick with it. A good working class stout or porter with oyster and a blue cheese.

But OK in bottle, as is Guinness Foreign Extra Stout, and Meantime London Porter. Will try this stuff when the weather turns cold again.
Interesting to see a Dublin porter going up against a London porter, especially given Dublin porters were the porter equivalent of German pilsner in relation to Czech pilsner in being the copy rather than the original. I brewed a 19th century style London Porter with a local brewery here in Virginia a few years ago called Blackwall London Porter, the key ingredient was brown malt, which in the 19th century made up to about 35-40% of the grist. How does London Black compare to Fuller's London Porter?
Fullers Porter has a richer, fruitier flavour, but is much less creamy. I'd say A&H London Black is more sessionable and should be served colder (8-9 degrees C?), whereas the Fullers Porter is more of a one drink, fireside on a cold winters night beer, that should be served a bit more around 10-11 degrees C. I like both beers, but if I was out in a pub I'd go for the A&H, whereas at home it would have to be the Fullers. That is, until A&H can find a way to can the London Black!
I compared a can of A&H 'The Porter' to bottle of Fuller's 'London Porter' around about two years ago. Both really tasty. However, I found 'The Porter' to be a lot tastier. Although, 'The Porter' is almost 7%abv. Whereas, 'London Black' is 4.4%abv. 😎👌
Great to see some competition to one of my all-time favourite pints. Belhaven Black ain't bad either and I find easier to drink. (Please start canning it!)
Don’t fret boys, the London Porter shall live on! It is the beer that turned me onto American craft, ironically, back in the mid 90’s. I am waiting for a revival here so keep it up! Nutty and roasty I am surprised the U.S. stout crowd hasn’t learned that the porter was the original STOUT! You guys should drop a little history on this one, it deserves it.

Great video Steve & Colin!
So cool🍻 It's a place everyone wants to visit! I love draft beer :)
Any plans for this appearing north of the border? I’m sure plenty pubs in Edinburgh would give it a go
Great video guys, immaculate editing and I am now willing to spend 40 quid on trains to go to London and try it 😆😆
I would love to try this beer...too bad I won't be in London for ages...any hope this ever makes it to CA?
Have they been sending any kegs over to the States?
I doubt it I'm afraid but let's see how we'll it goes!
Im tempted to travel across from Ireland to London just to try this :P
Hope that I will be able to taste it someday in Denmark 👍. Or else I'll have to go to London
Guiness is a dry stout? Thought it was a little on the watery
Any chance of another video doing a homebrew for those of us who can't get it on tap?
A homage nitro porter could be a great video!
My question would you rather have a nitro Porter, or a cask pulled one. I think I would rather have it from a cask.
Enjoyed your Beer and Cheese pairing talk at Wild Beer Fest, bud. Was definitely a highlight :D
Thanks so much and thanks for coming!
Guiness has a competitor? What was their strategy? Flavor?
When did they start using nitro? I'm wondering how traditional it really is? Were they drinking non creamy, semi flat self carbonated and warmish cask porter/stout before that?
