Alumilite Deep Pour Epoxy Test Casting

- Today I'm doing some casting with Alumilite Amazing Deep Pour Epoxy. I'm resin casting with the deep pour for the first time. The deep pour can pour up to 2 inches deep and I put that to the test. I used it in a silicone mold that has lots of undercuts and found out, that didn't work very well. I used it in other life casting Silicone molds and it worked just fine. The deep pour epoxy was made to pour into river tables. I tested that out with a HDPE mold that was 6 inches wide, 10 inches long, and poured 2 inches deep. It turned out with no bubbles and it was a crystal clear cast. I put links below to other videos and product links for you to check out.

I don’t do Instagram, hopefully one day you’ll make a short video demonstrating the application of a top coat to make hazy or matted exteriors look shiny. I enjoy your videos...and love your shop!
Thank you for watching and for your comment.. it will be a future video on doing a topcoat. 👍👍
Nice round of tests, definitely helpful seeing all the different castings and how it works
Thanks Zac! It’s not for everything. Lol but I’m sure it’s fine for an epoxy table. 👍
So cool, what kind of lacquer do you use for clear coats?
I don’t do the lacquer very often.. I just use the minwax clear gloss spray lacquer from the home store. Glad you enjoyed. th-cam.com/video/mzf_2SoCRlg/w-d-xo.html
@@JakeThompson awesome, thank you 😁👍
“I don’t doooo IG “ 😂 these videos are very informative I don’t have an Instagram but I’m getting one now to dive deeper into this, thank you!
Thank you for watching... I'm glad you enjoy the videos.
I just poured this and it’s 5 hours later and it’s still like water. If it gets hard it’s the best I’ve used so far but worried it won’t cure. Leaves barely any bubbles love it for first time using it. It’s been 5 hours I still could pour it out use it all over again and I mixed it exactly how it said
👍👍
I love your test videos! Right before I saw this I had to use this resin to fix a project, I was completely out of resin and this was all the craft store had in stock. I’m still turning the bowl but so far so good.
Awesome.. I think I’m going to cut the blue blank up and turn it next. 👍👍
@@JakeThompson that’s cool it cuts great with little to no chip out
JAKE THOSE CAME OUT REALY GREAT .THANKS FOR THE INFO FROM DOUG
Thank you Doug.
I love how the torch just kills the bubbles!
It's Pretty satisfying lol
Awesome instructional videos. I love the clear burl man that is awesome!! Popping the bubbles is so satisfying!!!!!!!
Lol.. it’s pretty cool.. popping the bubbles is pretty fun.
A very informative video. Alumilite water clear resin is hard to beat.
Jake, please do not forget about doing the walking cane with a resin finish! Tks, John.
I haven’t had the chance to try the water clear stuff yet.. hopefully soon.
Turned out awesome. Glad you clarified the purpose of the video.🤓
I’m glad you enjoyed the video! 😄😄😝
I actually got to see this on the day it was posted!!!! Nice job Jake.
That’s what I’m talkin bout Steve!! Lol
Very nice, Jake. Again, I really like that blue!!!
Thank you Kris.. 😄😀😀
Thanks for the information Jake. Hopefully I'll be getting into resin soon so these types of videos will help a lot.
Good stuff.. I have lots of fun doing this.. plenty more videos to come.
Very informative video Jake. I can't wait to start resin projects.
You will have lots of fun messing with this stuff. 👍👍
That burl is insane 🤙
Thanks Dan.. as soon as I saw the hunk of wood I knew I had to make fake ones.
These were fun tests, Jake. Nice work.
Thanks buddy!! I had fun messing with it.. lol
Awesome Mr Jake! What deepish pour would you recommend for turning, without a pressure pot, thank you 😊
Most of the pours without a pressure pot will have a limit of the resin you are using and then you will have to do multiple pours. Deep pour epoxies usually have a 2 inch maximum 😀
@@JakeThompson thank you so much Mr Jake! 😊
Thanks for all the great videos Jake. Loyal subscriber here. You mentioned Alumalight wasn’t the best resin for doing hand casts but it could be done. What would be a more ideal epoxy for doing hand casts?
Alumilite clear slow would be my choice for the hands.. I was just saying the Deep pour from alumilite will be best suited for River Tables. Thank you for the comment. And thanks for being a great subscriber. 👍👍
YEEEEEEEHAW. Looks amazing. Amazing video as always. I like the hands.
Awesome.. the hands a a big hit most of the time.. lol I’m glad you enjoyed it. 👍👍👊
Good stuff Jake! 👍
Thanks Buddy!! 👍👍👊
i just tried the deep pour resin and ended up with rubber with the 2:1 ratio. it was more rigid with a 1;1 mix ratio. that's with trans tint dye. still experimenting!
Awesome.. I’m curious to see how it goes.
Nice job!!
Thank you Joe!! 👍👍👊
Nice of you to give us these lessons for free. I don't do instagram.
It’s my pleasure to do these videos for you. 👍👍
AWESOME JAKE HAPPY THANKSGIVING TO YOU AND YOUR FAMILY GOD BLESS
Thank you Donald.. Happy Thanksgiving to you and your family as well. 👍😂
You should make 2 sided outer plaster cast to hold the silicon mold together.
That’s a good idea. I might try that.
How long after pouring deep pour 1” deep (and 12” long and 4” wide ) can you stir it to get the swirls I desire? 1-2 hours and it seems to return to a branch like design. After 14 hours there was a “skin” on top but it still mixed. I am waiting to see what the finished design looks like and see if the “skin” effected the finish. Just curious to see what your experiences have been. Thanks.
Alumilite has a good video on this topic… here ya go th-cam.com/video/7smKuCdoa54/w-d-xo.html
Very cool
Thanks Man!! 👍👍
Those hands would look really cool if they were part of a lamp and just to let you know my resin top for my lamp is almost finished it's just got a couple little areas I got to fill in with resin and got to figure out how I'm going to attach it to my cardboard blank
Awesome!! I can’t wait. 👍👍
@@JakeThompson thanks I need to post a picture of it on my Instagram that Sonic lid idea turned out okay that was hard to get the plastic off didn't make much of a Dome but it still looks interesting
Can you guesstimate from your tests what timeframe would be a good to pour if you’re pouring in layers with this? You mentioned you got a line because you waited too long on one layer.
Alumilite has a video on this and I think it was about 12 hours.. it needs to still be a little sticky when you do the second pour
How did you cast the hands? Did you use amalgam for the initial cast, then silicone? Amalgam sets fast (like 5 min) and I know silicone is much longer.
I use alginate first, then make a plaster cast of the hand, then make a silicone mold of the plaster hand.. then pour resin in the silicone.. 😄
@@JakeThompson exactly what I thought! Thanks
I was wondering what are some of the better moisture meters I am wanting to buy one.
I have a really cheap one.. I’m not sure how good it is.. but when I’m drying for stabilizing.. I keep weighing the wood until it stops losing weight.. then I know it’s all the way dry.
Thanks! 👍
Thank you for watching Julie!! 😄😄👍
Very cool!! I have been wondering about the deep pour. Love the weird T-shirt btw. I need to find or make that shirt. :D - Heidi
Hello Heidi, the shirt is from Andy Birkey.. I’m not sure if they are made anymore.. but here’s a link to his channel. th-cam.com/users/AndyBirkeyMaker
@@JakeThompson Cool thanks. If they are not made anymore I can just make one similar. :)
@@BlackCat_2 😄👍👍
@@JakeThompson Yeah glad all that self taught graphic art stuff came in handy. :) I have a beautiful shirt with a wolf head howling in front of a full moon that glows in the dark. The shirt has seen better days but I have not had luck finding another from that particular "Bike Week" so I have been planning to design one like it online, buy it and they will print it then ship it to me. I will add glow in the dark touches after I get it. :D
How does the deep pour turn? I'm thinking of using it to fill in some big knot holes in some bowl blanks that are too big for my pressure pot...
Here ya go. 👍👍 th-cam.com/video/_LaYI8tjGH0/w-d-xo.html
@@JakeThompson thanks!
I have a deep project to pour on an older boat and I need an epoxy to reinforce the port and starboard side of the stern where the motor is mounted, will this work for my project and how many ounces should I pour at a time.
I’m probably not the guy for this question.. maybe a quick trip to the TH-cam search bar would be the right direction to go. 👍👍
Very cool. But it would drive me crazy having to remember to come back and pop bubbles ever hr or so 🤪
Lol.. I didn’t have to do it anymore after the first couple hours.. it wasn’t that bad.
@@JakeThompson But this would be another great use for the timers ⏲️ 😁
@@ConnieConnie824 I love my timers.. lol
Can u send me link of u do turn some?
It will either be on the channel or Instagram.. 👍👍
You kinda skated around the questions I want answered. I need details on how to pour multiple layers. How many hours between pours? I think you said 24 hours between every pour.. Also do you do anything between pours like sanding. You said you had a line because you waited too long. How long was that?
Let me see if I can skate into answering your questions.. the number of hours isn’t going to be the same for everyone.. if your shop is hotter it will be set up faster and the opposite if you have a colder shop… The trick to multiple pours is to pour the second pour when the first pour is still gummy, like when you touch it with your finger it’s not all the way solidified yet… I had waited too long on mine.. when I touched it. It would barely fingerprint it… Alumilite had a video on their channel that shows what to look for definitely better than I did.. I hope this was helpful.
@@JakeThompson Thank you for your quick response. I will try my first pour today :) I will also look for that video. :)
What is the "clear cast" you talk about putting on the burl at the end? (9:28)
It’s amazing clear cast and they have clear cast plus with extra UV protection. It’s from alumilite and it’s a top coat epoxy. You can get to the website through the link in the description of this video.
@@JakeThompson ohhhhh gotcha. I thought it was like a spray on finisher that made the resin super shiny. Kinda like you did with the lacquer on the "poker hand". When you use the clear cast, do you just brush it on?
@@jerridgray5056 I’m going to brush it on super thin.. lots of people use it on tumbler cups on a device that turns them slowly.. and kids just pour it on
Wow!!!
I would bet that your wife doesn’t have any idea what you spend on resin, lol!
#single lol
Good Deal Bud!
Thanks for watching Buddy!! 👍👍
Makes sense not great to use it in a skull I just did that’s like 7’inches high. By the time this skills done cause I gotta do 3 layers will be 15 days before I see what it looks like. What’s the best stuff to use for big molds that’s clear to buy that’s very deep??????
I use alumilite clear slow and a pressure pot
Where did you get the torch?
I have had that torch for a very long time, but here is something similar. www.amazon.com/gp/product/B085SXFFR1/ref=as_li_qf_asin_il_tl?ie=UTF8&tag=jakethom-20&creative=9325&linkCode=as2&creativeASIN=B085SXFFR1&linkId=2ccc9e2cb474f0073112d2a3bbeeea6c Butane can be picked up at local hardware stores.
Ha if you turn deep pour let me know how it is. Im waiting to find out b4 i buy some
I might turn some.. if I do.. I will do it on Instagram..
I feel like the 2" rule wouldn't apply to smaller casts. Anyone else have this thinking?
I tried the Burl cast with one pour and it didn’t go well.
@@JakeThompson oh no!
Got it
Second 👍🏻 💯
