Been playing the rss 2023 cars on Asseto Corsa and it just makes you truly realise how dogshit the cars are in the Ea f1 games, problem is the ai is so bad on AC that its basically just hotlap sim. I dont get how a mod team can make such a superior car to a group of professionals who have been making these games for aslong as they have.
2:58 This is probably the most realistic feature of otherwise very arcade game. Full wets have been useless for the past 2-3 years and there's a reason why drivers have complained about Pirelli wets
I have played on pad with no assists since 2015 and I can safely say the car felt remarkably unfun in the beta. The correlation between joystick and ingame wheel has never been as good as F1 23, it was the best handling on pad by far and was such a massive dissapointment to see this huge step backwards. It felt like I was playing a mobile game and didn't feel connected to the car at all.

In terms of the question about aggressively taking curbs. Def did see quite a few cars flying over the chicane curbs this past week. There was a very cool shot of Lewis with all 4 wheels off the ground.
That's only at the Variante Alta, where cars go airborne all the time irl. It's all the other corners where real life doesn't touch the kerbs but F1 24 can just float over them.
I subscribed because it is the detail of content that I would like! It mixes in-depth analysis with user reviews. It also gets the facts straight and behind the scenes work correctly.. I would like to see more of this. I’m definitely gonna go out my way to check out some of the other videos! F1 23 felt really nice on a pad. F1 24 looks like it will be more easy on a pad but might take a while to get used too.
A few notes that I can say from my own Beta experience (without getting into too many details): - Ideal Brake Bias is back to 50-52% (yep, we're going THAT road again) - Engine Braking seems to work best at low levels (like 20%) otherwise it just starts giving unnecessary oversteer - Hotlap ERS is by design, uses more ERS because it gives the Energy system at max capped level, however it also recharges a lot... So you can use it for multiple laps straight - Overall grip seems somewhat unnatural (maybe too much at this point) - Tyre temperatures can be weird, especially in wet conditions Overall, I think I'll just try the game after summer to see whether they fixed/improved on things or not...
The battery not depleting completely was already in the F123 game so I guess it won't be fixed. It was normal to finish a lap with 30/40% in this game. I don't think that will be a problem in 24 because we can now use overtake in qualifying laps to use whatever battery's left
I don't think it's a bug. Unless of course you assume that the batteries in cars can hold exactly as much energy as the cars are allowed to use per lap in the regulations.
This is why i like Alex’s videos and subscribe, the honesty is fantastic. Thanks for being honest Alex, and in turn saving me 80 quid. Thank you and fantastic video as always
I gotta say I'm not finding any of these issues over the last few days. This isn't fromcaccasual player either, I play 100% weekends at 95% difficulty and find it very playable. Just the fuel load issues and slow car on the straights is problematic.
And F1 23 handling Is actually really good, if we compare it to F1 22 and this new bullshit of F1 24 all i can say is F1 23 its the best game since the new regulations appeared
This must have been the first video you’ve watched on the game or you’re one of those who says “I’m sticking to last year’s game” every year. Career mode is completely overhauled which makes this horrible handling even more frustrating because all the new features actual got me excited for the game.
If you have to spend an hour tweaking your wheel settings and then spend more hours making (unrealistic) setup changes at every single track just to make the car feel drivable, perhaps you should just save yourself $70 and not buy the game at all this year Im still on f1 2020 and have zero desire to buy the new ones
Thank you for your honest impressions! Unfortunately, we live in a world where people don’t have the balls to say what they think and they will say anything for a quick buck. Liked and subscribed!
From what I can see from the game play you're bang on in regards to the pointiness but if you can mitigate it via the wheel settings then its a good trade off for the suspension compression. I literally saw when you went neutral light floaty through parts of the corners. It was awesome
I play on pad and havent really felt comfortable with the handling since f1 2020 so is there any way you could compare the handling on a pad from f1 24 to f1 2020? Very much appreciated if you can.
To play devil's advocate, I wonder what proportion of players use a pad? I suspect it's much more than we expect and, overall, maybe making a more pad friendly game could result in more sales and higher retention. I believe this is purely a move to appeal to more casual users and increase their total addressable market.
@@jacobe8501 i don't know this, but isn't AG saying that it's much more approachable on a controller even if it's slower? Maybe that carries more value than outright speed. Like when I jump from GT7 to F1 using a pad I really struggle

I feel like an f1 game being a simcade isnt actually a bad thing. Controller and wheel users both having an enjoyable experience. Im hoping though that some of this gets fixed because its f1's official game so it should be fairly realistic especially when it comes to having setups that wont work everywhere. There should be a tradeoff between cornering grip and straight line speed. You should understeer when steering to fast and scrubing the tires and only be able to fix it by letting go of the throttle, on wheel and pad. The only upside for me, is if I'm in a league with mostly pad players, I'll have seemingly a massive advantage but I'd rather have to work for a win rather be gifted it.
I preordered it a month ago, REALLY regretting that now, going to look for a refund. I have really enjoyed ACC and other simulation titles. This is not what I wanted to hear. Thank you Alex♥
@@thomasdarthfifa6340 It's amazing. Setup's have taken me a bit to get used too, but it's very fun when you get a one and the car feels glued to the ground
absolutely, make sure you refund it. We need to show them that this is unacceptable and the best way to do this is with your wallet. If their lacklustre presales start dropping then they might actually take notice.
14:45... is it really a problem though? This was also a thing back in 2019 and 2018. Just adds more skill to it rewards the players that are actually fast instead of overtake spammers.
I’m not going to hate on the devs because I genuinely want them to make a good game, but I’m curious on where they got confused. Last year was the best handling we’ve ever had. Why did they go the opposite direction? Didn’t they say that they worked with F1 drivers this year? They worked with them last year too, if I’m right, and the results are somehow completely different!
Correct me if I'm wrong but the handling designer Alex is referencing at 5:10 is David Greco, someone who was highly valued at Codemasters. Now that he's gone and has been replaced with "engineers" the drivers are no longer being prioritised. On paper what they might think is a step forward is 2 steps back for the player. Such a shame.
I completely agree with your analysis of the handling, but I completely disagree with what you said about wheel users effecting sales. I think initially it might, because you TH-camrs will give it stick, but I think over time the vast majority of people who are casuals who play on controller will love it. This change is going to make the game boom and increase sales in the long run. Imo the game is just way too difficult on controller to be consistent enough to enjoy. This is the ultimate problem with F1 games. If you race online, all the wheel players shoot off into the distance and win by huge margins, even if they're slower than you, because they have consistency to at least stay on track. All the controller players are left with carnage as everyone tries their best just to stay on track, let alone race. I play for like 45 mins, try my best to lap consistently fail, then turn off to play Fm8 instead, a game where I can actually lap consistently on controller. It sounds like EA are taking the Turn 10 approach to this, and imo is the best way to go. I know a lot of people don't like Forza, mainly because most people have playstation, but Forza is a perfect balance of realism and accessibility on controller, and the online racing reflects that. It's the same as GT7. I'm personally excited to see how this game feels on controller even if it is slightly less realitic. If we can actually race on controller, this is a huge win and in the end will be what drives sales. Again, wheel users are the tiny minority in this industry. It's why F1 TH-cam is dead imo. It's full of wheel sweats instead of more casual TH-camrs enjoying the game. Casuals can't enjoy this game. That's the reality. So I think EA know this and they're fixing it basically. I suspect now I'm going to be able to play f1 24 and enjoy it now!
Also glad I wasn’t only who raised eyebrow that Casey used pad. David for 23 all year kept his Q&A open and discussed with everyone wanted from average padders like me to the 1%. Even addressed a few issues I brought up that pad player have. It’s a shame I think after good 23 handling. It would off been better to take small steps with handling changes. Giving himself another year to understand what playerbase like.
Actually I’m not. I use a pad and know majority of players play casually. The point is a large chunk use a wheel. When designing handling for a car. A car uses a wheel. Not a stick. Best way to get handling to react realistically. Is testing it using a wheel that has far more rotation travel. And it’s a 1 to 1. Once that’s all finished. You’ translate over to pad. So you can scale wheel rotation to limited stick left/right travel.
Thank you for the honesty. Didnt know you played the game late last year, but if you were worried then, i gues they cant change much now. Fair play for giving your opinion, genuinely worried about the longevity of this years release.
I'm very glad that there's a technical review of the handling. I personally am happy that the handling isn't like F1 22 (which was what I was hearing from leaks) where I was sliding all over the place. The only thing that I am worried about is how pointy it is but I guess we have to compensate through setups if and when codies decide to update it
You've raced with me, talked with me about it, and I've said I quite like the handling model. And I'm on wheel. So, that's just not true that you haven't heard from a single person who likes it on wheel. Sure, its got some improvements needed, but from my own IRL driving experience on how tires behave, it feels better in that area. Suspension needs some tweaking along with kerbing, but tire grip and the simulation of the traction circle feels pretty solid
Correct me if I'm wrong, but not only new handling system mad changes in the handling, but also the aerodynamics. They saw the changes to this year's cars in aerodynamics so they made them in the game too. It's just my opinion, but I could be wrong
With the resources of EA, Codemasters should be bringing in actual esports drivers and select content creators to design the handling models of these games. All we needed this year were subtle improvements on the model of last year with *actual fixes to gameplay features, UI, and menu interfaces* that improve the overall experience for the end users. Instead we have *checks notes* a few track cosmetic upgrades and a dog shit overhauled handling model? Cool. It's like the creative director of this game is some sort of half baked AI chat bot that has no connection to what the players of this franchise actually want. It's so fucking frustrating.
Don't forget EA is one of the worst gaming companies out there. Like any evil anticonsumer corporation they are happy to offer an inferior product at a high price, as most buyers are mindless consumers that don't value their money.
5:18 even that's not real because the majority of the actual Project Cars development team, including their physics designers, left after PCars 3 and formed a new studio, Straight 4. So they really got the rest of the bunch who still wasn't laid off (yet).
I think the difference is understanding what game should feel like on simcade perspective and then taking feedback from real drivers. In F1 24 they just took feedback and copy pasted everything exactly as Max said without fine tuning it to be playable. Problem is not Max but the feedback takers who feed that info to developers and also devs just blindly applying all the attributes of handling without any tweaks
This gives off f1 2011 vibes. What worries me is they just can't take criticism. Codemasters really should have stayed independent from the shit show of EA
@@Gamezoner911yeah agreed, Codemasters has never tried to innovate with the F1 games. There have always used the same models, same bugs year in and year out. Really can’t wait for another dev to have a go at F1.
Gosh I despised F1 2011! I was very good at 2010 and literally couldn't make sense the next year when I went from top 50-100 time trial laps on my best tracks to like 1000th, and never understood why.
I've been playing these games since 2010 on a pad, and whilst I'm clearly not Esports level, I've won races against wheel users. This news therefore is bittersweet - It sounds like the handling is "easier" for pad users than it used to be, so for things like solo career mode I'll make fewer mistakes etc, but it also sounds like it's ultimately not as quick as using a wheel. In fairness: If gamepads were ever 'as good' as a wheel then you'd see at least some Esports users using one. But that's not the case. One thing I note you *did* fail to mention is that a more arcade-y handling model is likely to make the game more accessible to new players who haven't played a lot of racing games. There have been versions of the F1 game in years gone by that have been almost unplayable on a pad. So at least there's that. In any case: Can't say the news disappoints me.
Handling might be bad but its wierd that someone like Lando Norris says that the handling is more realistic. so claiming driving feels more unrealistic seems wrong maybe its the driving styles that needs to be changed not the handling? Edit: even Charles Leclerc confirmed its more realistic on a live stream
I think a big problem with the f1 games is the engine they use is so old they really needed to run it with the latest unreal engine rather than catering to last gen console gamers the sooner they do this the better these games will be
Iam on the 1.3 patch and I love the handling. Far improved from previous seasons, atleast for controllers. Though I have a ton of other issues with the game though.
Now I see why soemone was taking a lot of curb around here on 23 because you can take all that curb in 24. That turn in speed on a controller is too fast and thats what I didn't like in 23.

It looks like you have grip hacks on. It’s especially noticable in the slow speed hairpins. You can kinda just toss the car in and no matter what the fronts won’t become overloaded and will just stick.
OO TELL IT TO EM ALEX I tried an F2 race on silverstone in the wet and the dry. The dry felt like racing in the wet, and the the wet felt like driving on ice. Whenever I brake and turn I just spin out. Im an advanced casual player who uses both controller and wheel and my AI is set to 94 on F123. On F124 Idek where to begin.
I thought about this a lot but expecting a sim out of ea is silly. It's like expecting ea fc to be like football manager. They'll always appeal to casuals over Hardcore fans of f1.
@AlexGillon thanks for the video, quick question does the ffb actually communicate through the wheel what the car is doing? Do you feel the car rotating, wheel spin and tire slip, lockups etc. or does it feel numb and disconnected like f1 22? Thanks!
The way you can turn the wheel agressively, understeer and then pick up instantly the grip reminds me of the Renault of 2005-06 with the Michelin tyres 😂
Thanks for shedding light on this big ball of crap. I've spoken to PSGL F2 F3 drivers from PS that have played it, and they said it's the worst game they've ever played. There's definitely more casual average players that don't know any better and will play it like any other game, whereas competitive high-level guys that grind will be very upset. This is the first game since 2020 that I will not pre-order nor will I buy it until it gets fixed. If it doesn't, I will set up an F1 23 competitive league. I'm done getting ripped off by CM and EA. This game is an absolute joke. Cars sound awful, HUD is plain as plain can be. And the cars are undriveable. The ERS shouldn't have been changed. It was accurate and fine the way it was. I don't want to be changing ERS 40 times a lap. For reference about myself, I've won a few PS scenario events and I've raced against some of the fastest players on PS over the last few years and I've been top 30 in TT on some tracks on F1 23. So that's my qualifications, so to speak for my opinions on this dud of a game. VERY disappointed!
Just played and it feels like my wheel has had its rotation cut down by 80%. Feels really tight and when I counter steer from a snap it INSTANTLY gains grip and send in the counter direction. Like wut!?😂
Crazy thing is, it’s not too much better on the pad. However, instead of front end troubles, the biggest issue is the back end constantly sliding out. This is the same issue as last game. By the way, what can I do via the setups to reduce the back end stepping out?
@@mtbtrailshreddersCyberpunk should've taught all gamers to never pre-order a single game. I hope you get your money back and just get the game on sale if it improves
Play in cockpit mode. You'll noticed the difference in handling and be able to adjust diff, engine brake etc a little more accurately. View can make a big difference, and this is why most serious sim racers use cockpit view, unlike silly eSport competitors.
Thanks for being so outspoken about this Alex. I already knew after the trailers that I wouldn't buy this game for the first time since 2015 (there is literally nothing new/important), but after playing the Beta as well it's just a disgrace how much Codies spit in our faces since the EA takeover. What's worrying me is that the handling characteristics resemble their rally titles... Massive front grip, endless lateral grip, tank slappers left and right, no weight transfer that matters
Tbh the patch 1.06 (I think) for WRC made the handling fantastic.....last patch broke that. The cars feels terrible again.
Great video Alex, just saved me a bit of money 😅👍🏻
Glad to see how honest you are about it
Been playing the rss 2023 cars on Asseto Corsa and it just makes you truly realise how dogshit the cars are in the Ea f1 games, problem is the ai is so bad on AC that its basically just hotlap sim. I dont get how a mod team can make such a superior car to a group of professionals who have been making these games for aslong as they have.
Modders are the better devs nothing changed with that was always so
Thanks for being so honest. Feeling like I dodged a bullet here by not pre-ordering.
I preordered and refunded cos of this
Thanks for being so honest, this is a pass for me
Yup same here.
Pretty sure it’s gonna be a pass for majority of F1 Fans
Re: the new handling designer: I remember hating Project CARS' handling on both wheel and pad so that's not good news at all
2:58 This is probably the most realistic feature of otherwise very arcade game.
Thanks for not being a shill
Didn't buy 23, will not be buying 24. I still watch F1 game content on TH-cam but I will be sticking to ACC myself.
Thank you for an honest video, I respect that a lot.

Actually get F1 23 especially if you have game pass
A few notes that I can say from my own Beta experience (without getting into too many details):
- Ideal Brake Bias is back to 50-52% (yep, we're going THAT road again)
- Engine Braking seems to work best at low levels (like 20%) otherwise it just starts giving unnecessary oversteer
- Hotlap ERS is by design, uses more ERS because it gives the Energy system at max capped level, however it also recharges a lot... So you can use it for multiple laps straight
- Overall grip seems somewhat unnatural (maybe too much at this point)
- Tyre temperatures can be weird, especially in wet conditions
Overall, I think I'll just try the game after summer to see whether they fixed/improved on things or not...
The battery not depleting completely was already in the F123 game so I guess it won't be fixed. It was normal to finish a lap with 30/40% in this game. I don't think that will be a problem in 24 because we can now use overtake in qualifying laps to use whatever battery's left
I don't think it's a bug. Unless of course you assume that the batteries in cars can hold exactly as much energy as the cars are allowed to use per lap in the regulations.
by the regulations there is a max energy deployment per lap so unless they are running a tiny battery it wont use all 100% (as far as I know)

Alex Gillon knows more about F1-Car handling than Max Verstappen and Lando Norris. Impressive….
This is why I've stopped pre-ordering games unless it's a team I genuinely believe in & want to support
So 70 dollars for a game that adds 0 new features from the previous game AND the driving actually got worse? Imma stick to my F1 23.
Well to be fair they added a few new Features
And F1 23 handling Is actually really good, if we compare it to F1 22 and this new bullshit of F1 24 all i can say is F1 23 its the best game since the new regulations appeared
They added new features, stop being such a negative Nancy
@@ammarisrar2005 tbh they are details, not new features, new features are things like classic Cars, new tracks, etc
This must have been the first video you’ve watched on the game or you’re one of those who says “I’m sticking to last year’s game” every year. Career mode is completely overhauled which makes this horrible handling even more frustrating because all the new features actual got me excited for the game.
3:56 The most important piece of F1 24 feedback is from Tiametmarduk: Gillon in the mud.
If you have to spend an hour tweaking your wheel settings and then spend more hours making (unrealistic) setup changes at every single track just to make the car feel drivable, perhaps you should just save yourself $70 and not buy the game at all this year
Im still on f1 2020 and have zero desire to buy the new ones

From what I can see from the game play you're bang on in regards to the pointiness but if you can mitigate it via the wheel settings then its a good trade off for the suspension compression. I literally saw when you went neutral light floaty through parts of the corners. It was awesome
Using the curbs in Imola looks like gameplay from F1 2013 😭💀
I play on pad and havent really felt comfortable with the handling since f1 2020 so is there any way you could compare the handling on a pad from f1 24 to f1 2020?
Very much appreciated if you can.
To play devil's advocate, I wonder what proportion of players use a pad? I suspect it's much more than we expect and, overall, maybe making a more pad friendly game could result in more sales and higher retention. I believe this is purely a move to appeal to more casual users and increase their total addressable market.
But pad is now 1,5 s slower after being about equal in f123
@@jacobe8501 i don't know this, but isn't AG saying that it's much more approachable on a controller even if it's slower? Maybe that carries more value than outright speed.
Like when I jump from GT7 to F1 using a pad I really struggle
Ran into 2 bugs already.
1. Only dry tyre selection during wet quali, sprint and race
2. Somehow backed out of a quick practise loading screen. It hard locked my career safe.
How they manage to f it up so bad when so little had to change.
Massive respect for making this video, thanks Alex
Acc is so fun compared to driving an f1 game, the amount of detail in my wheel is crazy 😂
@@thomasdarthfifa6340 It's amazing. Setup's have taken me a bit to get used too, but it's very fun when you get a one and the car feels glued to the ground

14:45... is it really a problem though? This was also a thing back in 2019 and 2018. Just adds more skill to it rewards the players that are actually fast instead of overtake spammers.
I’m not going to hate on the devs because I genuinely want them to make a good game, but I’m curious on where they got confused. Last year was the best handling we’ve ever had. Why did they go the opposite direction? Didn’t they say that they worked with F1 drivers this year? They worked with them last year too, if I’m right, and the results are somehow completely different!
best we've ever had is a bit of a strech but it was quite good. I prefer 2020 and 2018 and to an extent 2021
@@HBest94oTo be fair those years have a different car regulation compare to 23 so it impossible for it to feel the same
I completely agree with your analysis of the handling, but I completely disagree with what you said about wheel users effecting sales.
You're really overestimating how many people use a wheel.
Just watching the handling and sliding reminds me of F1 World Grand Prix on N64...
I think max helped with the handling this year and max is also a driver who loves a pointy frond end as Alex Albon said once in an podcast
Max would bully the developers to death if he would speak his mind
Damn Max ruining F1 and F1 the game, GOAT shit dude.
Max has nothing to do with this game dude they talk maybe 5 mins lol
There is a reason Max only drives on iracing and not the official F1 game.
Why is an analog stick/controller called a pad?
This gives off f1 2011 vibes. What worries me is they just can't take criticism. Codemasters really should have stayed independent from the shit show of EA
Nah codemasters were lazy developers even before the ea takeover
Bro, he was paid to say that 😂
@@micheledipietro9223 well same goes for Charles Leclerc he just said it on livestream to xD thinking they both got paid to say it?
I think a big problem with the f1 games is the engine they use is so old they really needed to run it with the latest unreal engine rather than catering to last gen console gamers the sooner they do this the better these games will be
They copied F1 2011 handling and called it a day. Full lock steering is back! 🤣
🤣🤣
Iam on the 1.3 patch and I love the handling. Far improved from previous seasons, atleast for controllers.
Though I have a ton of other issues with the game though.
I haven't bought an F1 game since 2013. No regrets
Now I see why soemone was taking a lot of curb around here on 23 because you can take all that curb in 24. That turn in speed on a controller is too fast and thats what I didn't like in 23.
For me its my favourite handling ever. Its the most unrealistic and arcade handling i have ever seen. But i enjoy it xdd
Just come from jaros first take and he was trying to drive around the issues and be not to down on it glad you came out and stood up and they fix it for wheel users otherwise it will be the second game in 3 years i wait until its fixed or i find it second hand so i dont give codemasters or EA money its sad ive bought every f1 game on colsoles and even back to the amiga but since f1 22 i didnt get until i found it second hand and this year looks to be the same.
have you ever driven a real f1 car ?
I know right! I think I’ll trust Max verstappen’s opinion before some dude with a sim rig any day
Max is paid by EA smart asses
It looks like you have grip hacks on. It’s especially noticable in the slow speed hairpins. You can kinda just toss the car in and no matter what the fronts won’t become overloaded and will just stick.
Its feels like a Arcade Game, with no more trail braking, just power in, and around all corners, use the throttle to rotate
3:00 when was the last time you saw the cars used wet tires?
1:09 As someone that plays using an Xbox controller, it feels awful on the pad as well
OO TELL IT TO EM ALEX
I tried an F2 race on silverstone in the wet and the dry. The dry felt like racing in the wet, and the the wet felt like driving on ice. Whenever I brake and turn I just spin out. Im an advanced casual player who uses both controller and wheel and my AI is set to 94 on F123. On F124 Idek where to begin.
2:57 well at least the wet tires are more realistic now XD
Why do these games not have a different handling model for pad and wheel users?
I thought about this a lot but expecting a sim out of ea is silly. It's like expecting ea fc to be like football manager.
They'll always appeal to casuals over Hardcore fans of f1.
What about the arcade camera veiw you use
@AlexGillon thanks for the video, quick question does the ffb actually communicate through the wheel what the car is doing? Do you feel the car rotating, wheel spin and tire slip, lockups etc. or does it feel numb and disconnected like f1 22? Thanks!
Feels like you are steering a boat
Looks like it will be the biggest step back the f1 games ever took
David Greco and Max Verstappen working together would have been something great imo.
The way you can turn the wheel agressively, understeer and then pick up instantly the grip reminds me of the Renault of 2005-06 with the Michelin tyres 😂
Thanks for the honest review mate
Absolutely spot on with this analysis bro. Been on these games since 2010 but wont be touching this game at all
Just played and it feels like my wheel has had its rotation cut down by 80%.
Interesting regarding the wet Tires, as Lando Norris said that this time they nailed how difficult it is to drive with wet tires^^
Funny to watch when Lando Norris played it and said it was even closer to the real thing ! :D
this comment is exactly why you should NEVER take a creators version of "realism" into account. They have no clue.
Lando said it’s more realistic than ever
Looking into it more like you said does concern me. Thinking on cancelling pre order now
@@mtbtrailshreddersCyberpunk should've taught all gamers to never pre-order a single game.
Plus as a pad player I and others get extra shafted this year, so why bother.
If only we could have gotten an F1 2020 game with '23 handling...
I dont really play these games however if you can adjust the toe, I suggest using some toe in at the front to help reduce the initial turn in on corner entry.
