I had A John Deere riding lawnmower pretty much similar to that one S X 95 mine was the John Deere 110 with pull 5 HP Tecumseh engine on it.

Yeah the first thing I'd try cleaning the carburetor for sure. Then start testing those power wires with A 12- volt test light grounded really good. Test check your starter relay solenoid switch out to cause it could be bad also.
