Nice rolling hills in NW Indiana. My 2020 F150 with the 2.7L towing right at #6800 of 31' long travel trailer.
I used to pass the hot shot guys in their diesels constantly when they where hauling fivers. And that engines so small you can pop the hood, crawl in, and eat lunch on the intake without touching the exhaust!
But.. I wouldn't even dare pulling in the mountains with it!

I just got out of that same truck. Although the 7.3 L did a good job with my 40 foot toy hauler, the ram 3500 Cummins diesel is like night and day compared to the Ford 7.3 L. A 17 mile trip is not enough to get a real world experience. With the Ford we would travel 400 or 500 miles a day, and I would be completely worn out, trying to prepare for going up hills and making the transmission downshift so that we didn’t get jarred right in the middle of the hill. We just got back from a 2000 mile trip with the ram and I never got tired from driving. So glad I switched to the diesel.

I hear ya bro. Wife and i both have 6.7 powerstrokes and i bought a 7.3 F350 single wheel to give it a shot. I've got a 32ft dual tandem gooseneck that i use for my backhoe or D4 dozer. Honestly it pulls good around town but with that much weight you dont want to be out on freeways trying to keep up with traffic. Same with our 41ft Cedar Creek 5th wheel. Our 6.7 f250s with lifts and 37 inch tires give us way more power and better towing mileage than the stock 7.3. Then add in a aux fuel tank with toolbox and crapload of tools. Lol.
I'd say the 7.3 is a decent around town hauler or lighter rv tow vehicle. If i want 6mpg i'll take my 98 peterbilt.

As a 25 year cummins guy, I just converted to a 2022 7.3 crew cab Lariat 4x4 w 4.30's. It is Apples to Oranges to compare it to the diesel, but it’s a hell of a sweet Apple. My only regret is not going with the Dually. Between all the emissions crap my 12, 17, and 21 ram had, the initial 10k investment, double the maintenance costs, and $1.50/gal more expensive diesel, the gas was a no brainer unless I was going to be hauling heavy in the mountains for a career like I used to running hot shots. I've towed about 4000 miles with it mainly in south & west Texas, averaging 6-9Mpg. My cummins usually averaged 8-10 towing the same 30' TT. I usually lock out 9th & 10th gears unless it's flat and no headwind. It sure is a great platform. Love it.

Skid steer weighs 11,000, so trailer is 16,000 pounds total. Def over my GVWR of 14k and 15k for my two trailers. Looking to get F 250 or F350 with SRW. Only complaint with mine I wish I would have got a long bed to get the 48 gallon gas tank instead of the 35 gallon with the short bed, and the transmission is a little aggressive sometimes when you put it in gear or if your going real slow across a parking lot it gets confused on what gear it needs to be in.

All that these HD trucks with gas engines need is a simple low pressure turbo setup. That Ford 7.3 and GM's 6.6, with either a 3.73 or 4.10 rear and their respective 10spd transmissions, are more than strong enough to do the work of a diesel. These are horsepower numbers that are equivalent to 10 yr old diesels, and the torque numbers match 15-20 yr old diesel figures. All of these engines are pretty badass nowadays, but that 10spd 6.6 Chevy will be mine someday soon

Personally, as a former 7.3L Power Stroke owner, I always appreciated the towing capabilities of the diesel. But that was only about 20% of my driving, if I'm being honest, and it was just too thirsty the rest of the time. That was 20 years ago, before all the emissions crap that makes modern diesels absolutely fragile by comparison. I have been eyeballing the 7.3 Godzilla for my next power plant, and I really haven't seen any complaints... just honest reviews like this one. I guess the moral of the story is, if you are a full time RV person towing something heavy and consistently, the diesel may still be the answer for longevity sake. If you are just a weekend hauler who uses the truck as a daily, the gasser is likely the better choice. Great video!

I am a diesel fan boy as well but I have saved so much money in oil changes, filters, additional filters, urea, diesel fuel and what ever else associated with a diesel. What I have also done which really woke this truck up and helped w engine braking is I added a 5 Star tune on 87 octane..3 tunes Called the 87 heavy or light tow and then performance. I tow everywhere from a 34'x12' boat to skid steer and bobcat. Im not going back to a diesel this gas motor gets the job done and saves me the coin. The two main things I think about when considering gas vs. diesel are that gas has much less range and it's very difficult to refuel at most gas stations. You should do a video where you pull that trailer into several typical gas stations. I'd much rather pull into the truck lanes...

Anyone making the consideration isn’t going to be worried about that minor detail. The major concerns are the diesel reliability or lack there of the SCR systems that constantly fail and the 50 miles to derate,That you get once there’s an issue you’ve got 50 miles and you are done you are not towing a trailer anymore you have to get to a dealer within those 15 miles and chances are they’re not gonna be open and they’re not gonna have time to work on your rig right away. Add to that the insanely high cost to repair and maintain them the fact that the diesel engine warranty is useless for the fuel system since most customers end up paying out-of-pocket even on new trucks because of poor quality fuel then you have to go after the station that sold the fuel to you try to get them for $15,000 good luck with that it’s just a nightmare and no one needs. The biggest thing is these diesel trucks are not meant to be daily driven back-and-forth to work with no load they’re meant to be loaded and run for hours on end not a twenty minute to forty minute commute empty that doesn’t do the jobIt’s just a matter of time before your emission system and egr system plugs up. I work on diesel trucks every day I maintain a fleet of them for a highway department most of ours are much larger 9 L Cummins and max force I wish we had a viable gasoline option they just don’t produce the torque in the truck that weighs 30 to 50,000 pounds and is pushing snow uphill. Our trucks are constantly giving us issues with the emission system it is not designed for our application either but there’s nothing we can do about it.

The 7.3 finished only 20 sec behind the Cummins and Duramax, and all three had the pedal to the floor doing it. Doesn't seem so bad for a naturally aspirated engine to me. Locking out the gears on the 10 speed is pointless. The compute refigured the spread for shifts. If your "hunting" gears with the 7.3 and the 10 speed, either accelerate a few, or slow down a few.. your sitting on the shift band. Took me a bit to figure that out. It'll also hunt on inclines if your towing with cruise on.
FWIW, EVERY gas truck I've ever towed with hunts until you find the sweet spot in how you drive it. It's not a diesel, you can't drive it like one.

"This gas just sounds so good, though, under load"
Yeah, it really does. For a while, lol. That's a personal preference thing, for sure -- I think gas is better for short trips and in mostly level terrain. By mostly level I mean non-mountainous terrain. I never towed with the 7.3 but towed many years gasser. What killed it for me was the noise and the engine running at such high RPMs for such long periods.
Where it was bad was on interstates where I'd have a high load with any headwind and going up/down steep grades. The MPG was especially terrible.
Something I'd really consider would be the 7.3 with a whipple. I've heard a few guys say their MPG went up when towing and the truck stays at lower RPM. I did similar on a RAM and had the same experience. Basically I got 10MPG towing (mostly level) or empty with a 10k lb on a 35ft trailer. But at that point it's gas for the sake of gas because it's going to cost you $10k to put in the whipple (or more if you can't do the work).
Just my personal experience with forced induction gas towing -- it took away the negatives that bothered me.
Now, you also noted how the gasser would drop gear and hit high RPM to slow down and asked why the diesel couldn't do that. Mine does. '22 6.7 Tremor - very similar to the one you tested recently. The diesel transmission has it's own TCU and the gasser does not is where this comes in, is my guess. The diesel TCU learns, maybe if you don't tow it learns to not do it. I've towed with my truck since we got it and it will send that thing to the red line going down mountains.
Anyway, great video -- hope you all enjoy a gasser if you get one, can't remember if you did your Ford build as gas or not. It'd be REALLY interesting to see you get the Ford as a gasser -- tow with it for a while, then get the whipple SC and compare.

The 3/4 & 1 ton diesel glory days have been long gone since the mid 2000s. Diesels didn’t have def and emissions equipment, price of diesel was lower, and they were easier to work on. So gas HD trucks make sense even if you get less mpg and output you save in maintenance and fuel cost.

Don't remember ever putting my foot to the floor; rarely more than 1/2 way. Around here ~9.7 - 10 mpg (towing). I do run at 62-64mph most of the time. Did 70+ for a bit, but much more relaxed drive a bit slower. Friend with a Duramax and like trailer averaged ~1.5 mpg better. His fuel cost ~$1 - $1.25 more per gal + DEF. He paid an extra $9k for the option above the 7.3 as well. Yes he has more tq going up the long hills, but I had no issues keeping up. Same going down hill. rarely use my brakes as the tranny does the work. If you want or need a diesel; then get one. But I do not want or need it and get along just fine.

You showed a trans temp of 195, I think. Not everyone may know this but the trans temp on the Ford 10 speed will average around 200 degrees on normal days (maybe a little higher on hot days), and this is by design coupled with newer formulated fluids. In fact, I believe the trans is built to take mechanical advantage of both “heating” and “cooling” processes to maintain that temp. Most people are used to seeing much less temps and many have taken their 10 speeds in for service assuming they were always overheating. Older fluids would completely break down at constant 200 degrees.

Your 23 350 gets a 10 hp boost too. My 7.3 douwnshifts hard on grade in tow hall, but has to be on a decline, the truck knows when it's on a hill. I have had it in tow/ hall with no trailer and coasting down a hill and had to hit the gas slowed way too much with no trailer.

I’d love to drive one of these godzillas. I’m sure it’ll be a great vehicle for longevity and reliability (hopefully atleast). I drive a 24yr old cummins automatic and it tows like a freight train, hence the reason I named it my street tractor so it’s be hard for me to go back to gas however I’ve thought about it multipal times. Just for normal driving comfort, gassers are better for daily driving imo. My cummins takes FOREVER to warm up

Cool review… nice to see the 7.3 gas engine in action towing. Hard to justify the diesel engine unless you tow every day

Agree. It takes a long time for anyone to recoup the diesel cost with the minimal MPG gain along with the increased cost of diesel fuel. If you tow as a job, then I see the benefit. Towing 5000 miles a year or less, get gas. Cheaper, same power for normal driving and no headaches from all the other diesel issues.

Before the 90s, all that existed for towing were gas engines. In the 50s and 60s, people used large 6 cyl!

GM proved it way back that overhead cam v-8's don't work in American pick up trucks. The Ford faithful have been suffering with the Triton engines for 0ver 20 years. This is a great engine because it's old school! You can actually see the spark plugs.

Open it up. I had a 150 with the Twin Turbo, pulling a 9K bumper trailer. NO problem at 60mph. I really didn't want to go any faster because, it felt soft and I didn't want to lose everything. I traded to a 250 7.3 Godzilla and pulled the same trailer. Ran it 70MPH and felt great.

I have a 2018 Ram 3500 with 6.4 hemi ....and it's a "dog" towing 10,000lbs....plus gas mileage even when not towing sucks. Some can probably be attributed to the archaic (basically full time) 4wd set up.

I have a 7.3L godzilla too and I want to put a proportionally sized turbo on it to help with power and some fuel economy. It’s a fucking awesome engine

Nobody who loves diesels doesnt love big cubic inch gas motors with some grunt. But the turbo diesel has been bred from day 1 to be a superior tow rig. Like people have been commenting, the diesels are much less stressful on the driver too.

I know it’s crazy but what ultimately made my decision for a diesel was the ability to fuel up at truck stops. Most gas pump other than the ones made for big trucks aren’t made for a a truck and camper. The truck pumps usually only have diesel. That 7.3 is a beast and much less in maintenance costs.
