Have certain habits that you need to do ingrained so that you don't forget or miss certain things. For instance, when I'm anywhere other than home, I find a designated spot to put all of my stuff. Hotel room, at a friend's house, wherever, all of my things go in one spot, and I only move them when I'm using them. That way I don't forget anything when I'm packing up to leave. I learned this in drum corps 7 years ago, and I will always use this method.

Take Ritalin before doing walking-tours or museums! Cannot stress this one enough.
BUT, be sure to make sure it's not illegal in the country you're visiting.
If it is, your psychiatrist can write special papers for you.

It never ceases to amaze me how you can logically break these things down in a manner that ends up hitting all the right buttons for the challenges of life. And once again, recognizing that obstacles that I have been embarrassed to even admit to are actually a 'normal' part of life with ADHD. And not only can I talk about them, but I can also actually do something to mitigate their ability to derail my day. Amazing! Thank you so much!

  • @berlineczka
    @berlineczka 5 ปีที่แล้ว +4

    1) If you're going to a destination with dozens of attractions, make an A-list of places to visit, a B and maybe a C. This way you'll see everything that's important but also have some wiggle room in case some museum is closed or took you less or more time than anticipated.
    2) Pick a travel guide and let it "decide" what to see, where to eat and where to party. Lonely Planet are great, and so are Merian's (there may be others I do not know but are good, too!).
    3) Once you have your list and your guide, check which sites have free entry on which days. Often these are different days and if you plan wisely, you can save a lot of money that you can then spent on pleasures, or on 'not overspending' (once I managed to visit 3 museums and the royal castle in Madrid for free just by planning by free entry days, and could spend the saved money - some 60€ - on restaurants and other pleasures). You can then make a flexible "puzzle" with the other paid activities on the other days or hours.
    4) Consider buying a city pass for 2, 4 or 6 days (or whatever you destination offers, depending on the length of your stay and the number of attractions included that you want to visit). It will shorten the time you spend waiting in lines, save you money on the entry tickets, make some planning decisions for you (as you will want to put all the sites included in the city pass to be visited during the validity of the pass). In some cities it even works as a public transport ticket! (which again saves you money and the trouble in figuring out which ticket you should buy - or worse, the money on a penalty if you are caught without a valid ticket).
    5) If you are travelling with several people and/or using various currencies, use the Splitwise app. All can enter their spendings they made in any currency, and the app keeps track of how much who owes whom. Less potential for fights over money.
    6) Consider having a wishlist of stuff you'd like or need (e.g. in your phone or journal) and dedicate separate budget for that (which you won't spend on general vacation budget). If you need e.g. a new summer dress or shoes, and you have time to visit shops, do so on your vacation. Buy things you love on your destination, if this is something you were planning to buy anyway. This way you have a personal souvenir from your vacation that is actually useful - and likely a thing that you wouldn't buy at home, as there may be stores you don't have at home.
    7) Oh, also: in the EU while you need to have some ID with you all the time, it doesn't need to be the passport or even the original document. Bring a copy of you passport and have it in your purse, while your passport is kept save in the hotel's safety deposit. Or use your driving licence instead.

These are good tips. Number 5 and 7 are especially important for those of us with ADHD. Another tip would be consider using a professional travel advisor. They make the planning portion go much more smoothly and they are your backup if something goes wrong during your trip. It doesn't necessarily cost extra to use an advisor and often the savings in time, and stress would more than make up for it. You can also often buy your vacation on payment plans which is a great help in budgeting for the trip.

Thing that went wrong on my trip to NYC: walked too much in bad shoes the first day and my feet were killing me the rest of the trip. I got around this by doing the cheesy tour bus thing for the next few days. I had a great time even if I wasn't planning the cheesy tour bus thing.
Thing that went wrong on my trip to Denver: lost a bag of $75 worth of souvenirs. I used Colorado's finest medicine to deal with my emotions about this and that helped a lot.

My best advice is do not rush! Rushing to arrive places is what takes away most of the enjoyment for me, bringing me just more stress. I admit that planning ahead does help (but honestly I am super likely to forget even if I write it down). So if I have to decide between saving money and saving me from stress, I choose the later. If I have to book a flight I tend to choose a later flight so I don't have to rush to the airport (or wake up too early) and If I go overseas, Ideally I'd like to take a day or two of lower activity to recover from jetlags. Also I like to remind myself that for every problem there is always a solution, there is always another flight in case you miss it and a change of plans is never out of question, what really matters is having a great time.

This video helped me so much in coping with shame I've felt on trips and vacations before. I always felt like the wet blanket on trips because I didn't want to cram something fun into every nano second. I've stayed for hours alone in a hotel room on multiple trips, miserable because family and friends were out having fun while I was, I now know, was having a meltdown from too much stimulation. But I couldn't put anything into words and frequently was badgered about my "odd" or "princess" like behavior. What made me feel worse is I wasn't normally like that! I knew I got overwhelmed easily, but travelling brought out something in me I rarely saw and couldn't explain. Now I know it was my ADHD. Thanks, Jessica!

I absolutely love travel and have been blessed to do a fair bit of it. Because I've been able to travel a bit a lot of the tips you posted are second nature. But one thing I also love is that I now tend to travel solo and after making sure I have the basics covered (flights and at least the first few days of lodging) I can let my impulsivity reign ssupreme. This has ended up giving me a lot of really amazing trips that really made me feel alive and created great stories. I wouldn't recommend it for everyone, and honestly it doesnt always work out great, but having experience in having things go wrong - fixing them - and moving on really allows me to roll with life a lot better than I used to. Also I make more money than i did when I started traveling so that helps. :D thanks for another great video!

If you're sharing "chores" at a beach or mtn rental with other folks--make some schedules or lists of who is doing what, so no one has to worry about who is doing what and when. I mean, seriously, we'd get back and I'd need a day or two of rest before getting back to work just to recover. Once he relented, and I planned our trip- with ZERO expectations of doing anything (except laying on the beach!) he's never gone back. I have been planning a small vacation for my son's birthday. Something that I have done is researched hotel costs and gas costs. I think I figured out it would be like $1105 for the trip so, I rounded that to $1500 to equate for anything extra that might happen. THEN I took that amount and divided it by how many weeks until our trip, so I can set aside a small amount every week. I also make to-do lists for packing and things that need to be done BEFORE I leave. Such as making sure the thermostat is set or calling our electric company to let them know we will be out of town and to call our emergency contact. Thanks for another great video!

We are two autists adults one with OCD (me) and one (ADHD) and we LOVE to travel, I also have to travel for work. We do a lot of this stuff you have on the video and laughed a lot at things he does and I do so we complement well as travel buddies. The tips on travel itineraries and activities with and app and others, amazing, thank you!!!!! Is also good to know we were on the right track taking extra day or 2 to slow down and a couple before leaving to have all done and accounted for, I can attest to this tip as a real deal changer for stress reducing effects (oh, and I am a mom too so, you now anxiety soars and I am traveling alone with her in 2 weeks...OMG).
My travel tip, if you budgeted money for food daily and you did not use it all on X day, roll it to the next for either emergencies or other areas and you will have even more extra $$$ to buy stuff at the end of the trip and still be on the safe end ;)
(I do budgeting visually and manually because I have dyscalculia and otherwise I forget)

I lost my phone for a brief 15 minutes during an island hopping tour. I made all people in the boat running around in the island looking for my phone.
It turns out I put it in someone else’s bag.

I did the same thing when I was in Highschool.
I lost my phone in class and I was sure that I've put it in the pocket of my vest. It wasn't anymore so I made a few people in the administration open the classroom to check and half an hour after, when we were thinking that someone stole it, the person in front of me said "Isn't your phone in this pocket?"
It was in a pocket of my vest but the one which is on my right arm, the one I never use...

I love vacations and planning and thinking about it and gets me even more excited and then when I get there I like to just live in the moment and have fun but in the back of my head I never stop thinking about how it’s gonna end and I’ll be back home to my boring life and wasting my whole time stressing out when I could be completely stress free .

We talked about this video and managing stimulation levels. This year, we’re going by train instead of loading a car and driving. Goodbye stress of driving in traffic on Sunday night when we’re all exhausted!

I’m a 36 year old ADHD/Autistic female who has been drawing like crazy due to the pandemic and your videos have helped me better educate on myself as I was diagnosed with ADHD at the age of 4 back in the 80’s. Thank you for this video - very helpful.

Jumping in a year later to say that balancing stimulation levels is ESSENTIAL. I went on a family trip once where we hit up Universal's Halloween Horror Nights three nights in a row. There was a lot of cool stuff and I don't regret going per say, but between the constant loud music, the random actors jump-scaring people at every turn, the haunted houses themselves, and being on my feet for several hours every night...yeah by the end of night three I had a near meltdown from everything being Too Loud and Too Much. Learn from my mistakes. Take a night off.

I usually go to out of state conventions for my vacation so I have a schedule built in from panel and event times. I pick out the ones I really want to go to, ones that sound interesting if I have the time, and block out a time to go to the Marketplace. Fitting lunch in is a little... hard for me because there is just so many things I want to do! It also helps that I get to meet up with friends that already have plans who will invite me along. I tried a solo trip with no plan and didn't really do much of anything so scheduling is really important for me!

Nice choice of vacation spot! Wish I had known you were going to be in this area. Honestly, one great part of a vacation is getting to see places and things. Its more of an "agenda driven" vacation. Its easier, for me anyway, to go see and experience things, than just "spend time at the beach". A good idea for people who are going somewhere to see specific things (aka Niagara Falls), is to connect with friends and locals near the area beforehand. They can give you ideas about places to see, tourist traps to avoid, best times to go to avoid crowds, and side trips to see things you hadn't thought of. (You totally should have come down to Letchworth State Park!) If I plan a trip to an area I've never been to, I try to connect with some people through a common interest (fellow ADHD'ers, car clubs, geocaching clubs). They can be a great resource, both for planning, and once you get there. Also, if anything happens, its nice to have someone to reach out to that knows their way around the area. If you are driving somewhere, having a GPS (that isn't on your phone) can help navigate, even without a cell signal.

When I went on my honeymoon, my husband suggested we book a few big excursions ahead of time (tours, day trips, etc.) So that we didn't have to worry about booking them there. This made things sooo much easier! we saved money by knowing exactly what we were booking and we had a couple of days that were already planned out but the rest of the days were wide open for exploring. I found it helpful to do a tour right at the beginning so that you can have someone else show you around, then you know what to explore later!! For reference, we went to Aruba and loved it ❤

I'm travelling internationally for the firs time (and on my own) soon, so this was super helpful as I am trying to get ready.
Also, if you need travel sizes for things, try asking Sephora for cosmetic samples. Often they have them or can make them, and they are small enough to be safe to travel.

  • @TheFinalMB

Heck yes!!! This video is very well timed. Got 2 trips coming up and I need all the help I can get planning them out :p
I have to say the excitement burnout can be very real but keeping a stomach full (but not too full if your going on rides) of food helped a lot with the whole thing. Also Disneyland has dole whip and vegan gumbo, so it wasn’t hard to keep properly fuelled while I was there..... though I did end up spending several hundreds of dollars on just food, but hey, totally worth every cent.
And I’m not sure if it’s just me who feels this way but I find it easier to concentrate when changing settings like that. Going overseas and getting out of your normal setting for me seemed to bring enough background excitement (oh what’s that thing? It really does flush backwards here. America has one of those doohickeys?! Incredible, etc etc) that doing things that would normally grind my brain to paste just thinking about trying to start attempting to consider were much much much easier. Maybe my hypothesis is wrong and it was something else that made it work, but that’s what I’ve been running with all this time.
Side note: When did you come to Australia and how did you find our lil island nation?! Hopefully the “stuck on he harbour bridge” thing didn’t turn you off coming back.

Vacation planning has never been an issue for me. My issue is the couple of days before. I get organised way in advanced with lists and everything, but when it comes to actually doing the packing or booking of the last minute things that's where I fall apart. I went on my first all inclusive trip this year and it was the least stressful holiday ever, even with the travelling and having covid checks. I still like my travelling as oppose to holidaying, but that was a much needed break from everything. My head got so clear I even completed my tax return whilst away as my brain was like 'let's do this now'. I didn't submit it till I got back just in case there were mistakes but that was on my mind (it was due 3 weeks after ny holiday)

one thing i found to be helpful when checking out of a hotel room is to do an empty hands check. Pack your stuff into your car, and keep going back to your room and checking understuff, inside drawers, on nightstands and in the bathroom. If you find something, walk it back to your car and start over. Keep doing this until you can get through the entire room without finding anything that belongs to you, and you can walk back to your car Empty handed.
this has prevented me from leaving hygine kits in the bathroom, chargers on the nightstand. Unmentionables in the dressers... ETC.

Just a suggestion: The next time you talk about an app that is helpful, it would be really nice if you could elaborate and give us real life examples of how you have used it and even screenshots or videos of you scrolling through the app and clicking on things and doing things on it and share how the app was helpful to you. While I was watching your video, I was like, "whoa what app? How do you use it? What does it do? What is it called again?"

Most ADHD medications are stimulants and while not as powerful, caffeine often helps with symptoms in a similar way and is usually easier to find. Before my diagnosis I found drinking coffee helped when I was really struggling.
But medication isn't the only way of dealing with ADHD. Just being aware of it, learning how your brain works differently and trying out different strategies designed for ADHD brains can do a lot. This channel is good for that. Also just not being alone and talking to other people with ADHD ("Hi"), can make it easier to not feel isolated and misunderstood.
There are videos and sites out there which help explain ADHD but the ones I know are in English and with generally American cultural assumptions. You might have more luck explaining it to your mother and other people if you can find some descriptions written by other Egyptians with ADHD because they'll speak in a way that your mother can probably relate to better.

I got stuck on the wrong side of a river one week before the next ferry, 20km from the next bridge but only 5km from my hostel, with 2% left on my phone and bad reception, while I was on a biking trip.
My sister called the hostel, they gave her the number of an old man with a boat, she called him, he took me and my bike over the river.
So I got to the hostel in time and they had even made my bed (its usually something you do yourself)
and even though I had missed dinner they had saved me a plat.
I ended up staying there for an extra night.
    Fun vacation stories👍
