    it's a monk not a shapeshifter, the forms are not trasformations they are postures, and i get your point, they could've changed your character's posture but you wouldn't see them anyways since you're casting so fast you're never in idle.

      I've always thought of it in terms of the martial art form. A form is composed of different stances, footwork patterns, blocking movements, evasive actions, and striking / kicking techniques. Unfortunately forms don't really have direct practical uses as most forms are meant as a means of practice so you will become better at transitioning from one technique to another and develop a smooth flow in your fighting movements. Which means that smoothly using techniques that are in different forms in an actual fight means that you're applying the knowledge/practice from a form correctly.

    The reason Samurai hits so hard is because it’s the designated selfish job; it has extreme singular damage and very high personal DPS, but basically no party buffs that others would have to offset it. Black Mage is the same way, and since their rotations are based on personal damage, if you mess up a rotation then the difference in messing up for another DPS is even more severe since it’s all on you to fulfill it rather than have some leeway from party buffing being part of your own “DPS pool,” if that makes sense.
    And yes, Positionals are expected to be learnt and tested around asap since they’re a big overall loss of damage and special effects when you’re not under True North.

    • @donteddy1858
      @donteddy1858 2 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      It is not only about rotation if you end up with a dmg down because you mess up mechanics (or a dunce cap of shame because you died) it hits even harder than other dps who outsource some of their dmg to teammates.

    • @Medinaxz
      @Medinaxz 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Samurai's so braindead easy now it's very hard to do it wrong. There's no more management of the meter, it's just, if shinten's lit up, use it. Keep higanbana rolling, and don't let CDs drift too long. It's also slower than monk so you're not mashing so hard to keep your rotation rolling. Doesn't have anything like missed mudra inputs. No animation locking like jumps. If it didn't require Stormblood and a 50 job, I'd recommend this to anyone who's getting in to a melee role.

    • @rogthepirate4593

      As of Endwalker positionals - at least for Dragoon, and most certainly for Reaper - aren't *that* big a deal any more. Yes, you'll lose roughly 10% dps on the big hits, which you shouldn't if you can avoid it, but as DRG you don't lose raiden thrust any more if you mess it up, which was arguably the biggest problem, and with RPR ... well, there never was any additional effect except more damage.
      I'd say the DPS loss is certainly noticeable, but not remotely critical in 98% of cases.

  • @mitrikgaduk347
    @mitrikgaduk347 2 ปีที่แล้ว +40

    Here's some tips:
    - Positionals aren't like walls, they aren't a suggestion. Learn them or you'll have to learn them when they start to matter, so get used to it, so you don't suffer later on.
    - This is why Tank has to keep the boss in one position. Note that some bosses don't have positionals, something everyone doesn't mention for some reason.
    - Jobs are more akin to a playstyle, some are harder, some are easier, this is all perception, it just so happens that the most hardcore elitist snobs tend to choose which are perceived as hard or easy for the community and like a bunch of lemmings they follow their every command. Usually this comes from DPS charts, which is aren't even TOS.
    - All jobs are balanced relatively well and you seriously will never notice the difference in damage between them unless you are at the cutting edge doing Ultimates ON PATCH DAY, not 3-4 patches or an entire expansion later, those bunch of pansies.
    - Choose what you enjoy, enjoy what you like, never choose a job because of it's perceived difficulty or it's damage output, because 9.9/10 it won't matter (even with Ultimates for that matter, every job is capable of clearing all content, it all comes down to how shitty your friends are).
    I won't lie, I've been a Ranged/Magic DPS since I started FFXIV and have only played Reaper as a Melee seriously (I've leveled all ARR Melee jobs to around 40, played Samurai till 60). I've been playing on and off for like 3 years now. I main DNC/RDM primarily while dipping into Reaper, been having a lot of fun leveling SMN, currently 71, and pushing ShB content. All of these jobs that I play are considered "easy" by the community, I've never been called out for playing an "easy" job, and I always get the job done.
    As RDM and SMN (so far) I have rezzed and saved more parties than I can count, a lot of floor healers and "hard job" players that constantly fuck up mechanics, leaving the "easy job" as they like to call them to pickup the slack. That's what you get for sitting in your Ley Lines all day bein' greedy. XD
    JUST REMEMBER: A-B-C AND YOU'LL SUCCEED!

      Kaiten was not complicated, it added some extra spice to samurai because big hits felt bigger but as long as you didnt spend your kenki the second you got it you pretty much never had issues, most of the time just by doing your combo for your dot/midare you already got the kenki you needed. The complicated part about samurai was staying in your one minute window in shadowbringers because you had to count your gcds but while thats technically still there you dont get punished nearly as hard anymore given that you have stacks of tsubame gaeshi now.

  • @OakesParker
    @OakesParker 2 ปีที่แล้ว +8

    Positionals are pretty much mandatory. However, this is where the difference between really good players and ok player difference comes into play. A real good one can keep positional uptime, while ok players can't.
    However, especially when boss mechanics come into play, you do have true north. This basically makes it so that positionals don't matter while true north is active.
    For the aoe markers, you want to look at the boss cast bar. That will tell you when the aoe marker snapshot is going to happen. And it is that snapshot that will determine if you get hit or not.
    Also, that game engine limitation is part of the reason why DRG has a reputation. When you are performing jumps, you aren't actually in the air. You are technically travelling really fast along the ground and it also has an animation lock. Which is why they can die because of that animation lock or because the player greeded when they shouldn't have and got caught in the air marker. Game engine limitation, as they weren't really too concerned with verticality when rushing to make the game.

    • @danilooliveira6580
      @danilooliveira6580 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      positionals aren't mandatory, at least not anymore. there was a time that with some classes not hitting positionals would mess your rotation, but not anymore, now positionals only give you a small potency buff. meaning its a lot better to just hit the enemy than to drift your rotation or not do damage because you can't get the positional. a good player ignoring positionals will still do more damage than a bad player hitting all positionals.
      also not all snapshots happen when the enemy finish casting (or more precisely, when the AOE marker disappears, since not all AOEs are casted), there are a few outliers that break the rules, but you will find them pretty easily as you play the game.

    • @ZariLutus
      @ZariLutus 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@danilooliveira6580 I'd still consider them pretty mandatory. That doesn't mean to stop your rotation if you physically cant get the positional though. That is definitely not what people mean when they call them mandatory

    • @danilooliveira6580
      @danilooliveira6580 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@ZariLutus I know now we are just arguing semantics, but that is like literally not the definition of mandatory
      mandatory
      adjective formal
      UK /ˈmæn.də.tər.i/ US /ˈmæn.də.tɔːr.i/
      Something that is mandatory must be done, or is demanded by law.
      I would say its more like highly advised, but not the highest priority, the priority is to not drift your rotation and always keep your GCD rolling. now when not hitting your positionals meant breaking your rotation or not getting resources as it used to be for some classes, I would say it was a lot a lot more important, maybe even worth it drifting your GCD depending on how hard it was for your class to realign everything in that specific fight.

    • @nahuel3433
      @nahuel3433 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Not with every attack though. Some for example have the cast bar before they make the circles appear.
      Meanwhile you don't know when they'll disappear because the boss technically already casted the attack and its in the middle of casting another.
      There are other variations like this. Today I died to the fate boss in Thavnair in an attack where he puts 2 sets of fire balls and blows one up and then the other.
      I pretty much muscle memoried from the later set to the one that blows up first as soon as the cast bar was finished. Except the fire bombs makes the yellow circles appear and disappear a second after the cast is done and I ran head first into the explosion.

    Something that’s useful for you when it comes to the melee and how they feel! Every job has feint so we’re ignoring that for now okay?
    Samurai has chunky damage bc it has NO utility or buffs to share in a raid. When you compare it to something like dancer which has the lowest personal dps but the highest raid dps (I think) their parse damage logs basically flip. So samurai is big damage all the time but hey now you don’t have to worry about buffing others to do your job!
    Reaper has standard attacks, red attacks, spooky attacks augmented by a debuff it wants to keep on all its enemies. It’s a fairly easy to use saw against any lumbering beasty but won’t have samurais big naturals all the time simply bc it has 3 forms and a party damage buff AND a shield that cracks into healing juice if the boss hits hard enough.
    Monk has the punch card mentioned and the lack of samurais full numbers but don’t worry! They can literally increase the healing the party takes by chanting a mantra or saying “good job team” and boosting EVERYONES critical rate while feeding the monks chakra cravings. Essentially it’s a melee with that uses it’s raid buffs to further buff it’s already dangerous dps.
    Dragoon is super simple. You have a combo you end on a side and a combo that ends on the butt. The jumps are useful in between your skills so good for weaving them in just be mindful of the puddles mentioned. Dragoon has two buffs a raid one and a single target “I love you the most let’s hit the boss even harder” one you have to specifically pick an ally to cast it on. Great dps again and wonderful movement. Does suffer from raid buff numbers but I’ll explain that soon.
    Ninja has its super personal debuffinator that lets it hit like a truck driven off the side of a mountain and plummeting to a spectacular landing. On the condition that you land your skills all correctly. Without that you’ll still have strong dps but if you’re paired with a master ninja you’ll see how fast they do their hand signs and see them just under the tank.
    So everyone has these buff windows except samurai and here’s where they come in. You have the raid dps and your personal dps. By not dying and completing mechanics and generally playing well you will have high personal dps especially with classes using their personal buffs or samurai. Classes that have party buffs however, have a higher raid dps than samurai because they’re directly boosting the power of the party as a whole.
    They are reliant however, on the party not dancing off a cliff in stupidity just to make the most of their buffs. If we raised everyone’s baseline to samurais power levels and. Kept their buffs then they’d drastically outpace samurai with ease. It’s all about balance in the end and that balance is helped by having an easy class that hits hard and feels rewarding to play as samurai does.

    8:25 Doing more damage is better than doing less damage but doing damage is better than not doing damage - follow these 3 rules:
    1) If a substantive portion of your overall damage output can benefit from positional use = Maintain position(s) for optimized damage output,
    -2) If unable to positional attack due to fall danger or zone hazard = activate true north,
    --3) If unable to positional attack due to fall danger or zone hazard and unable to use true north = ignore positional and attack in spite of dps loss.
    This does require that you be cognizant of the overall fight, I.E. being aware of things like potential knockbacks or opportunities for fall deaths, or even things like upcoming damage zones in the fight: because a dps who dies suddenly does no damage at all and as stated above Doing damage is better than not doing damage.

    I agree with you on monk. They are like stances and I wish the stance of your character changed. Think of it like monkey kung fu, into crane, into tiger then back into monkey. That’s how I do anyway.
    And with greeding like he talked about, with dragoon and red mage the game does not consider you moved out of the space until you land from your backflip. So if you backflip and the attack goes off when you are in midair you will still get hit even though you may technically be out of the aoe marker.

    Dragoon as a job is essentially perfect to the point the devs are having to rework it to make room for further growth and skill additions. Monk is basically designed around various martial art stytles. Samurai is pretty obvious and straight forward but somehow there is a very noticeable difference between good samurais and bad samurais. Reaper feels the best because its the latest melee dps and was designed with all the experience that the devs have accrued over the years. Just like why Sage feels so fun to play compared to other healers. Monk and Dragoon are the oldest melee dps then Samurai came out in Stormblood. I expect future new jobs to feel just as good as or better than reaper and sage. That and reworked jobs as well. Like Summoner is super fun and very straight forward.

      IMO, Dragoon is unfun because of how turbo optimized it is, and how obnoxiously long the ramp up to use your major is, and then the guides tell you to hold it _even longer_ so you can align buffs???!! Compared to Reaper the rotation is glacially paced and the buttons lack identity beyond having to hit them in a set order, which I feel was a decision made to showcase bar swapping with the controller and is awkward AF on PC.

    I have been playing for 7 years, and found on average the cast time is about 3 pulses of the AOE indicator as a quick visual, but there is also server ticks to worry about. You can set up a focus target on your HUD that you can move to a location you can quick glance that will show the cast timer. Positionals are a must for the most part as it does increase your dps and opens more dps options reaper only has a couple of attacks that really require positional but monk and goon are really dependent, a good tank can really make a decent goon and monk shine by not dancing the boss or mobs around like they were at a renaissance waltz. As for animation lock, as a RDM main I learned that even if you just land outside of the AOE the server still snap shots you as inside unless you move before the snap shot is taken so move right after you land and hope the server tick gods have blessed you. The main thing to remember is have fun, if your learning the job let the party know, most of the community will help if you have questions or if they are familiar with the job give you some tips... also, I love all of JoCats' guides even the DnD ones. MNK and DRG also only have 2 positionals, no class has more than 2 positionals, save for DRG that was 3 (but if you are doing your rotation right, chaos spring will come before wheeling thrust, meaning both hit on the back), but DRG is also the one that gets less extra potency at 40, while all other classes get 60 potency (save for NIN that has only 1 positional and get 50). so its not as important to hit positionals with MNK and DRG now, there is no skill that requires you to hit positionals to not mess the rotation anymore, they are all only extra potency.

    To be completely honest on positionals, it only REALLY matters for raids to get them, other content you can do fine without worrying about them too much.

    Like everyone else mentioned, SAM hits hard because you have no utility, and everyone in the party sighs a little when they see you. Whenever I play with my FC, I always roll NIN or DAN just so I can provide something to everyone else besides just tunnel-visioning the whole time.

    I do not know who your talking to about Dragoon's, but you have no idea what your missing. They are fun as hell. And easy to play. Now, to me... Samurai is to slow. Cool downs are too slow. I've had one and played it to 65 I think. Anywho... I stopped playing it. Wasn't fun to me.

      not really true. Reaper was the test bed for their new job design philosophy. They were talking for ages about growing past the old structures. Its why they setup the new SMN structure with a base they can easily build upon and why they're remaking crit,etc (and in turn about to change DRG, etc) because its all part of a series of changes over time.
      Reaper is just part of the plan, its not the cause of the plan. The plan already existed before reaper came out. They're simply the first car model with the new tech, they're eyeballing it for how it works out as they prepare that tech for the other jobs new models.
