  • The New York Dolls started up again in March of 1976 and toured throughout the year trying to drum up interest in hopes of landing a record contract. Despite performing over thirty shows and having a steady residency at Max's Kansas City, no record label wanted to touch them with a ten foot pole. David Johansen and Syl Sylvain continued to soldier but eventually ended the band at the end of the year. The two would part ways and form their own bands along with signing record deals as solo artists. Despite the deaths of Johnny Thunders in 1991 and Jerry Nolan the following year, the Dolls would officially reunite in 2004 with bassist Arthur Kane but that is another story! Listen to Cuppy talk about the "new" New York Dolls.
Special thanks to the website From the Archives for helping make this video possible, the wonderful photography of Bob Gruen who documented The New York Dolls and the digital archives of the fan magazine Rock Scene as well.

You're welcome. I was always fascinated about the lost years of the New York Dolls and wanted to document their attempt to regroup after Thunders and Nolan left.

My dad did a gig with these guys back in the 70s. He had to slap them around and choke one of them to get them to go on stage because the band didn't want to play until their girlfriends arrived.

The weeklong residency at the Ontario sports bar would qualify as rock bottom.

Yeah, at that point the Dolls would play anywhere. Thanks for the tidbit.

Lots of good info on the "Dollettes". The narrators voice is really annoying, though. And he pronounces Maryland as "Mary Land". Wha?

Cuppy does the music histroy videos and the Illustrious Narrator works on the RIP videos. He does has a strange way of pronouncing certain names and cities.

I think this list of shows including the one in Baltimore were in 1976 as you can see that Johnny Thunders is not in the photographs shown.
