    Nice looking box that it comes in, it fooled into thinking that was the case until you opened the box and took out the case

    I just love the thing. Bought one for myself (the + version with upgraded power and reset buttons) and was so pleasantly surprised I immediately bought another one with a Pi3 included as a present for a friend's kid (get them while they're young)!
    Great product, stylish, extremely portable and quite rugged. It's become a beloved piece of entertainment kit in our household (so many games!!) We even lug it around when airbnb-ing. So practical and great value for money.

    I got one of these a few weeks back from Amazon. Good to see they've gone viral or something since then because I'm setting them get reviewed everywhere. Highly recommended little case. 10/10

    I bought one of these a month ago and was very impressed with it both as a case and resembling an nes. The only real knock against mine was that the screws fastening the pi down weren't perfect, but the pi 3 sits in there very well.

    I have one of those, got it back in the beginning of the summer. I was glad I did. I not only love the look, it makes makes it a much better form factor. And the handy holder underneath for spare SD cards is brilliant for swapping the OS and not misplaceing the Micro SD card.

    I got one of these cases with the little fan and I needed my 2.5 amp power supply for it to run well without that lightning bolt symbol on the upper right corner of the screen. It ran fine with 2 amps when the fan wasn't connected. I love it and I will probably get more. Thanks for letting us know it also fits a tinker board sometime I might try one of those out.

    i really like this case, the fact that you have 7 usb ports, 3 of which are plug and-forget, on the pi itself, makes this super nice, also having the fan port, and a the power button, just makes it one of the best pi cases i've seen.. plus, it's a NES, how neat is that?

    I just did a retropi build in this a couple of weeks ago. Very nice case. The only complaint I have about it is that I wish the area under the flip lid was recessed a bit so that you could hide the game dongle while still having access to it.

    I wish the Ethernet port was on the back, though maybe that was difficult given where the port is in the Pi. I connect everything via Ethernet unless it’s a mobile device.

  • @KISSbestfan

    Ive came up with the similiar idea last year, but in my case I did it the old fashioned way. I simply took the shell of an old gaming console, and put a SBC inside. At the front I made a hole and fitted standart USB hub. After the prototype I made, and Im often using, since its easy to carry around, and play games with friends, I also made a couple of them for my friends requests using the cases of damaged consoles, which can be bought cheaply (mostly Playstation 2 Slim, and it even does have two USB port holes at front). For my fiance young brother Im doing a case basing on a toy car.
    Of course this is still a very unpolished way of doing this, and since Im planning to buy a cheap 3D printer, my future works would improve much, and so the sky would be the limit.

    Hi Chris, I got this case and its awesome! One thing Id like to point out (from knowledge I gained from your channel :) ) is that for a safety measure when using this case where it kills the power risking SD corruption, what I did in my build was use Berryboot on the SD then boot retropie of a mini USB drive that plugs into the pie itself so its out of view and you dont have to leave the lid open in the front....so thanks mate for that! :)

  • @ceptimus
    @ceptimus 7 ปีที่แล้ว +16

    Better to fit the WiFi dongle inside the case direct to one of the Pi's USB ports - that leaves all four ports on the front free.

    • @ExplainingComputers
      @ExplainingComputers  7 ปีที่แล้ว +10

      Good point if you do not need to get it out again in a hurry! The Pi effectively has 7 USB ports here.

    I recommend a wireless keyboard like a Rii 8+ as you can put the receiver in one of the USB slots inside as its a small receiver and keeps the external slots free as well as having a clean look. Also 2.5A is the recommended PSU for the Pi 3

    Nice. One of my concerns was about heat... thinking back a few videos and remembering that some of those little boards demand a 4A power supply (not in this particular case), I got wondering how the heat would be dealt with, but you addressed it with the 30mm fan option. It would be interesting to know if that would be enough to deal with whatever heat could be generated with such a setup. I'm not a big fan of these little tiny SBC's, but every vid that you make about them puts a wee bit more confidence in me about them.

  • @johnsimon8457
    @johnsimon8457 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Yay! Great coverage as usual!
    I have one and it’s nice but the ventilation at the top of the case is quite restricted making a fan much less effective.
    I’m tempted to pull out Mr. Dremel and make a few cuts, but I’d probably harm the aesthetics of the thing.
    A fan is probably overkill for a Rpi3 with standard clocking and heat sinks but a Tinkerboard is another story altogether.

    A nice review. This case addresses one of my minor faults with the Pi and that is that cables and wires come out in all sorts of directions giving the Pi a rather disheveled look. No fault of the Pi though for a palm-size sbc you must address a few tradeoffs. A nice review indeed. Well done.

    in defence of the push/pull sd card reader replacing the push/pull one. Within the first month my pi2 fell off a table and the sd card slot is now permanently pushing out. I either have to secure it with an elastic or store the case upside down an push a butter knife against the slot. I am quite pleased that they use a different system in the pi3 I got my nephew.

    Well that explains why these cost more than the 3 dollar cases. Much bigger, full of hardware, very nice; I only wanted one as a joke before, but after this I'd like one as a serious Pi case lolol, that is a sweet set up.

    i would love to see you implement some of the soft/safe power down methods into this case. there is a mausberry switch that people have used and a script where power is a safe shut down and reset when in game for retro pie quits you back to gui and reset at gui resets the pi. FYI your the one that got me into these SBC's....they are highly addicting for some strange reason

    You got me. I saw the update to your videos and thought great! My son would love something like that.
    It looks like a neat piece of kit, and since I keep on telling myself, ( after I binged watched your videos ) that I had to try one of those small computers, I just might.
    I am very new to computers really.
    I bought the latest addition of Scott Muellers Repairing and Upgrading PC's.
    I bought two different editions actually. The first covered up to around Sandy Bridge/Ivy Bridge I think.
    Till I started reading I had no idea the order in which Intel progressed their cpu's.
    I had to go back and purchase another book in order to get closer to today's offerings.
    The second edition goes into Haswell, unfortunately it does not go much into Broadwell.
    At least I think it hits the wall at around that point and it does not delve as deep into it, nothing on Skylake and further.
    Its like trying to drink from a fire hose. It hurts my head and I have to do maybe a chapter at a time and then go back and reread.
    Over and over, wash, rinse, repeat.
    Man I still don't get it at times. I may never get it. Although I can at least point at the components on a board and tell you basically what they do.
    I do like tech though, and even if I never fully understand it all, it keeps me interested.
    You happen to be the instructor that really pushed me to take my first step on the path of actually building, and tinkering verses just watching.
    Your videos do not center on gaming, and they were refreshing and new.
    I think I could fool around with the smaller format and not have the wife murder or divorce me over the coin spent.
    And spend it I have, due to me working on two builds at the same time, a new micro ATX Coffee Lake build for my son, and
    a full size ATX Ryzen 7 featuring an Asrock Taichi board.
    Your smaller computer videos just might scratch my itch and not put me in the poor house.
    I'm glad I found your channel and staying subbed.
    It might not make a big difference, but I removed the add blocker I usually run, as I hate adds.
    I read somewhere that you guys don't get paid with it on? I have no idea but wanted to try and support the channel and not ride for free. Thanks for continuing to put out great content.

    Another great SBC project accessory on another great vid.
    One future project I would like to see is if it would be possible to use an SBC as a streaming/encoding computer to take some of the weight off a PC and find a const effective way of utilising a Raspberry Pi to stream with a minimum setting of 720p and 30 fps and how further up it could go if it had no bandwidth limitations.

  • @tyomies6168
    @tyomies6168 8 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

    Its a good case but the thing I've noticed is that the slot for the 3.5mm hole is way too small so you may have to make it larger. I spent an hour trying to figure out why the composite video just shows a black screen and then noticed that the cable was not connected properly because the 3.5mm hole on the case is too small for the cable and does not give a proper connection.

  • @happyspaceinvader508
    @happyspaceinvader508 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    One thing you missed from the video; the reset button can be programmed to restart whatever main program you use for emulation (e.g. EmulationStation) to gracefully stop running programs and then reboot the Pi. Similarly, you can also program the power button to kill applications gracefully and then power off.
    A basic scripts is available here: github.com/RetroFlag/retroflag-picase however, you may want to customise the script it installs for specific actions. Anyone reasonably familiar with Unix and Python will find this a breeze.

    • @ExplainingComputers
      @ExplainingComputers  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Ordered one a few days ago, still waiting. I'm actually quite excited having just seen this video. I recall seeing a set of retro games being sold on an SD card. Must investigate further.
    Brings back memories of ordering one of the originals for my kids, back when they first came out. The Turtles game soundtrack drove us all mad!
    GOOGLE WOOGLE PING, have a banana.

    Excellent case, but the front Ethernet and additional 2 USB ports behind the lid ruins it for me :( Those should be on the back. It would be an excellent Kodi/Retropie case for the RPi otherwise.

  • @TheNZJester
    @TheNZJester 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    I find it silly they have the LAN moved to the front when the back of the case would be a more logical place for it to be moved to for use. That flap on it should also contain a recessed area to allow smaller dongles like your one you plugged in to be fitted under the flap and still allow it to close. From what I can see here in this video any dongle plugged into those ports would prevent the flap closing.

    Chris, why did you not put the wireless connector at the internal USB ports? other then that I found it good that you showed the possible errors one could make putting it together. And if I am not mistaken, perhaps you could fit a 2.5 HDD at the inner topside that has some room left, although I am sure you would have to destroy the case a bit to fasten it.

    • @ExplainingComputers
      @ExplainingComputers  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes, the donly could go inside the case -- but not if you want to get it out easily! :) You may get a 2.5" drive in the top of the case (I've not opened it up to look), though the screw risers that stick down onto the Pi may need removing to achieve this.

    I like if they made a Thinkerboard with two built in 8core CPU and they use 2 cores as one single core, like a Raid0 for 2 cores to work faster, so having two 8core CPU's would work as one single 8core CPU at much faster clock speed, so it can play modern games, an M.2 slot in the back side of the board, and a Ram slot so we can put 16GB or DDR3 ram

    Very interesting, The new iterations come with a safe shutdown switch you can enable, you just have to install a script on your pi, flick a switch on the inside of the case, and the front powerbutton will safely shut down the Pi. Marvelous. Also, there is a new SNES case that just came out that seemed to solve the whole front connected Ethernet that.. me, among others, do not enjoy, Granted, its not on the back, but on the side, towards the back is better than nothing!

    Could you put the USB keyboard/mouse receiver in an onboard port inside the case and still leave the front ports free? Maybe there are wired controllers for a truly retro feel, but still be able to use a keyboard for the OS?

      Leon Adams Yeah, you can use the internal USBs, for anything that will fit :)

    I ordered mine just before Xmas as had wanted to get back into homebrew ZX gaming and I found a load of my old Atari 400 computer games printouts from that glorious era plus a few old MSX and Oric/Atmos and BBC printouts and even one ancient withered and yellowed set of ZX80 program typed sheets for a very sketchy random maze sort of game I made using large cube lines to create the classic "dungeon" experience so spotted Retropie had MSX, ZX Spectrum and several Atari platforms I followed on with my Nespi purchase with a RP3 and so looking forward to peek and pokeing, stabbing a few USR's to get them blocky pixels jumping about the place again hehe and especially in the case of the ZX80 fire will no longer be an option (my mum bought me a ZX81 cos my kit form ZX80 just kept combusting and I prob annoyed Sir Clive like hell getting replacement parts hehe) The Atari 400 doesn't seem well remembered these days altho it and its bigger brother the original 800 were quite formidable gaming platforms, just the price compared to the Vic and C64's saw the platform divebomb and by this time I had evolved to Speccy +3 and was repairing and building my own PC's from salvaged parts.

    Nice. I wonder how hot the Pi3 will get enclosed in there when actually emulating the NES. It would be great to keep it passively cooled. Any good free homebrew NES games or demos out there to avoid copyright infringement?

    You could put that USB dongle on one of the unused USB ports on the Pi itself! Make it a bit more discrete.

    1 thing I don't like about the raspberry pi is that the ports are arranged stupid. I like my ports that are connected all the time to be at one side. Why does this case have the ethernet at the front?? Pretty stupid

      same for me. If some designer is reading this, also do not place all of the USB ports on the front! Leave 1 or 2 at the back.
      I am looking for a case to be used for a multimedia system using a Hifi-berry extension. But so far it seems I have to build one by myself. And yes, I still use ethernet cable instead of WiFi in this case. Old saying: Those who know radio use cable.

      Ethernet on the front is a poor design decision. I wouldn't buy one for this reason! I want my devices on my network (wired only) but that would look ugly!

      Stoney_Eagle If the ethernet port was round back it would be perfect. But i think the onboard wifi would be enough for retro gaming because you're not streaming data from the network. Game roms are usually stored on the sdcard. Plus, if you're nostalgic for the Nes, you're not gonna care

    Ethernet ought to have been on the back. It would have been neat if the front case door had a 2.5" drive bay. Load an SSD like a cartridge! :)

      In fact i installed Retropie and wiringPi together! That way i can use gpio pins without problems!
      I use a RGB led for GPU temperature monitoring! I also hacked the reset button and installed another button to shutdown the pi properly! So...you will not need another pi if you want use gpio pins!

    My Pi's internet is hard wired so I'd feed the cable through the back of the case and straight into the Pi also for the keyboard to leave the front clean.
