    Great video, I got my brother SNES PI case and loved it. He snapped the SD card because because it didn't have a paper warning him to remove it...
    This new NES for the pi 4 looks great and usb boot will be a wonderful upgrade. For $40 with a power plug seems fair, but I would prefer to save a few bucks with no power adapter.

    There is a guy on Etsy that sells 3D printed SSD carts in both grey and gold, and you can have labels put on them, ie a Legend of Zelda label on a gold cart.

    To make one correction in your video, it is NOT Mini DisplayPort for the video-out. It is actually micro HDMI.
    Otherwise, you have a very informative video. I can’t wait to receive my micro HDMI cable so I can “get my retro on”!

    If you unscrew the case on the old Crucial SSD you will see that the black ring arround it is removable. You will need the proper sized screws though since the ones in use are a bit too long, but once it is done it will be 7mm rather than 9mm

    the nespi has some issues. there is a lot of interference from the exposed usb3 wires used in the case. it can mess up wifi and bluetooth connections. i managed to control it with aluminum tape. there is very little air flow from outside the case. with this the unit runs hotter then other cases i have used. there is also no fan control. i build one and added inline so the fan wouldnt run all of the time. also the shutdown script has an error in it. it is set to reboot instead of shutdown. if you wanting additional cartridges, etsy has some 3d printed cases.

    Not too expensive and produces a nice little machine. I was never a Nintendo fan so I'm not the target market. I know that injection molding is very expensive so I'm amazed they went to the expense but what I'd really like is this treatment being done to an Amiga case, something like an Amiga 500.

    • @stokeseta7107
      @stokeseta7107 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Since when is injection molding expensive, when you mass produce stuff?

    • @PaulLemars01
      @PaulLemars01 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@stokeseta7107 Now I've got to admit that I'm old but it used to be that the cost of IM tooling was really expensive and the break even run was about 100K units. Not to mention the electronics manufacture that has to be incorporated into the product. I suspect that a vintage Nintendo case for the RPi is a niche product that will have relatively limited appeal. I don't see them selling millions of these especially since the ROMS are of 'questionable' provenance. But hell, good luck to them.

    Ooh I noticed you are drinking Rise canned coffee in this one before I even checked the description. It's some good stuff for canned coffee like that. Kind of pricey around me though so I'll stick with my drip machine most the time, I need to get a new espresso machine at some point though as that's how I normally like my coffee.

    There's also the DeskPi Pro. That one is not yet released, but it does a few things over the case you call out here, most importantly IMAO it converts the miniHDMI ports to full sized ones.
    It also comes with a GPIO extension and an IR reciever, and IMO far superior look (nothing against you but for me that grey plastic is just ugly, I actually prefer the acrylic. That console was before my time so I don't have nostalgia).
    Like the case you mention it has a good CPU cooler (looks actually even better), a PSU, an on-off button and of course an SSD mount with adapter.
    All that for a quite simular price.
    Might want to check it out when it finally gets out.

    It looks like you plugged the USB extenders into the wrong ports. It appeared you plugged both front ports into the USB 3 and the SSD into the USB 2. You should get much better performance from the SSD if you put it on the USB 3.
    Edit: I see you fixed the cables in the following shot.

    Be warned, this case, due to some kind of shielding issue with the USB 3 internally, WILL block your 2.4 wifi as well as your bluetooth controller signal. I went from full signal wifi to none when using this case. My 8bitDo can only get about 6 feet from the case before it starts malfunctioning. This is a known issue and there are a couple of work-arounds, but nothing solid. You can supposedly plug the USB3-Sata into a USB2 port and it might help. Otherwise, you can use foil tapes to shield the USB daughter boards and wires yourself. That's what I'm about to try tomorrow.
    This interference issue and the hotter temps are sad strikes against this otherwise amazing case for a retro game system. Disappointing.

  • @danw1955
    @danw1955 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    I love the general layout of this, and even though I'm not a gamer, I'd buy it just for the full accessibility to the SSD and micro-SD card. I use my 4B for a lot of testing and R&D and I'm constantly changing OS's and whatnot. It's currently installed in a Geekworm X-825-C6 metal case and USB/SATA hat kit. The case really knocks the crap out of my wi-fi signal and bluetooth as well, so moving to this wouldn't really rectify that problem (from what I've seen in the comments), but with some creative shielding work, it might actually be a solution!😉

    I have one. I like it. BUT; the sata to usb connector is crap- and you either have to run retroflag a ‘firmware update’ (or it’s already loaded since I complained) or do the workaround yourself. Long story short, in your config.txt there is a usb.quirks line that disables ADP because the connector is china crap- it’s still fast, but not as fast as with a decent connector!! Verify it, and I told retroflag and they just made a ‘firmware update’ and haven’t disclosed to customers. Suck. But it’s still cool.
