I find your videos so peaceful :) I don't get to hike as much anymore except for the occasional photo safari at botanical gardens and such in the Smokey Mountains :)

Great that the skink cooperated ! I've wandered some Maryland woods, and find that they're more lush than those in our home state of PA; The slightly more southern latitude spawns many more critters of all types, as well as plants. The feel is totally different.

Red and black ant on the log is a Cow Killer Ant, EXTREMELY if not THEE most painful sting! I learned the hard way as all kids did back in the day exploring the dunes of Delaware! They actually make a loud squeaking noise when put in a cup and agitated!

  • @chuckiephead
    @chuckiephead 5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

The insect at 10:32 is a velvet cow killer with a stinger as long as its body and a 6 on the pain scale from 1 to 5 .one of the most painful stings in the world! Its a wingless female wasp!

bald-faced hornets have a sting that is VERY painful too, and the pain lasts a while as well. I had one fly into my down car window a few years back and land between my back and the drivers seat and sting me. An experience I'll never forget.

There's a Skink that hangs out on my front porch, and a few days ago, I noticed his tail was gone, so he probably had a close call with a predator.. I enjoy seeing him out there..

I have quite a few skinks on my property here in Florida. I have about 5 acres in the country here in Lake Butler, they hang out around the dog pens where my husbands hunting dogs are. I understand skinks are poisionous.

Hi Cliff, my first thought was that it was a Bittern too, but they don't have that green bit around the eye though I don't think. The ant at 10:41 looks like either a red velvet ant or a cow killer ant not sure. Wow you managed to get some Skink's after all, they're beautiful creature, I love the metallic blue colour. I think they posed because they did look fat and full up from a meal lol, whichever works though right lol. Thanks for sharing your brilliant wildlife packed hike. x

Skinks have a break away tail as a defense mechanism. I believe they can regenerate them.

That black and orange bug is what we in mississippi call a cow ant. It's sting is bad as a wasp.

It should be called Skink State Park , The only time I seen Skink at least I think they where was at the Grand Canyon out west in 1976 I hiked down into the canyon to the bottom and back out in the same day , it was dark on the way back up the switchback trail we had to hug the inside wall of the trail as we could not see only by moonlight but seen many Skinks running buy our hands in the moonlight .

The large ant might have been an Occidentalis wasp-looks like an ant but is a wasp. In NC they are referred to as “Cow Killers” because of power of their sting.

    Lizard and skinks around here.
Super bad sting from what landed on the camera.
    Looked like a bullfrog.
    We call those Dun beetles.

Where is the underwater camera? The bay is full of blue crabs!
I am certain they are better to eat than skinks. : )

@@thewanderingwoodsman7227 They could be hanging out awaiting their demise at the all you can eat crab places on the eastern shore around Ocean City. If you are in that area Assateague Island is well worth seeing. : )
